I always considered Paul’s bit in the opening where he’s sitting with his grandfather in disguise to be his solo scene. That cut scene felt like an eternity and made my brain melt.

It's no wonder the scene was cut. As a professional film editor I would have recommended to the director that the scene be cut too. It seemed that the scene was meant to bring about a bit of the Liverpudlian accent and humor, but as we all know, Paul wasn't the greatest of actors. He's a musical genius, but he's no thespian. Love that you got to hang with Victor Spinetti. What an amazing experience and story.

I don't like the reason why they said it isn't proper for a Beatle to be left alone with a girl. John was basically left alone with a girl with his monolog scene as they were coming off stage where she stated your him, then look like him, then you don't look like him at all. Crazy excuses. I can see that it wasn't played out well to scrap it.

I did like the references to the group and how fulfilling it was to be a part of it, that would have been a pretty cool inclusion as a thought on its own without attaching a serious or reflecting tone to it.

What's odd about this dialogue is how serious a lot of it sounds. This was a light-hearted , low budget movie about the adventures of a pop group, wasn't it?

Yes. Maybe they would have tried to play it as lighthearted banter, but the dialogue doesn’t come across like that.

1) I read a book a while back written by an American Beatles fan. She was the one who formed the Victor Spinetti Fan Club. She met him several times and she's the one who received the fuzzy sweater as a gift. 2) I just finished watching the 1964 Miss Marple movie _Murder Most Foul_ . A young actress with straight hair caught my attention. Turns out she played the secretary in the George Harrison scene in _A Hard Day's Night_ .

Yeah, thank god they cut it out. There really isn't anything of note in this entire conversation, no humour, wit or anything really. It just rambles and overstays its welcome making you lose interest and get bored midway through it, whereas there isn't a single moment in the released film like that. A Hard Day's Night is a near perfect film with how unrelentingly witty, fast paced and tight it is. Not a single wasted moment in it.

I really enjoyed your story of buying Victor Spinetti's script, Andrew! It was very gracious of you not to go ahead with the sale and return the script to Victor, who comes across as a very kind and generous man. I think that Paul's scene, if it had been included, would have really slowed down the pace of the film and seemed too long in my opinion. John and George's solo scenes were very humorous.

I have to believe they were just trying to spare Paul's blushes when they told him the scene had been dropped due to the lack of pace. There is quite a lot of dialogue and I cannot imagine Paul's performance sounded convincing against that of the professional Isla Blair.

Great hearing about your time with Victor. I met Victor Spinetti at the Sydney Opera House in 1990. He was doing his one person show ‘A Very Private Diary’ (amazing performance). We chatted afterwards for quite some time. He was very friendly, candid and regaled my partner and I with many a Beatle story. A great night!

When I was in film school back in the late 1900’s (1984) one of our assignments was to direct and then edit a scene from a movie using theater dept. students. THIS is the scene I did! I still have the original VHS copy someplace. I was also always fascinated by the scene and why it got cut. I figured it was because Paul sort of already had enough plot with his Grandfather. I found the scene in that old “A Hard Day’s Night” script paperback with the red cover.

Brilliant again Andrew! I personally thought George's scene in the film was the best bit! I suppose the script writers thought they could play on John's cynicism, Paul's intelligence and Ringo's humorous character, but were at a loss as to what 'stereotype' to put on George. This left him to be himself and be more natural in the film. No wonder he formed Handmade Films years later. Fascinating video you made.

I can see why the scene was cut, but what a shame for Isla Blair not to have had this interaction with Paul in the final film (though she has had LOADS of credits over the years). I can't help speculating that parts of this scene could have been saved if they were intercut in an amusing way with another scene... but that wasn't the way A Hard's Days Night worked. Anyway, that was another very informative video, and how amazing to have those personal memories of Victor Spinetti!

That was one hell of a script! No wonder it took two days of filming. I'm wondering if the entire dialogue was used for the film, or if they edited it down a bit prior to filming. Either way, I can understand them not using it. It was a bit too detached from the rest of the film. I greatly appreciate you recreating the scene to give us this insight. As always, great upload!

Great video, Andrew. I actually acted (very briefly) with Victor Spinetti in one of his one man shows a few years before he died. He signed his book for me too. I saw 'Hard Day's Night' on release. My Mum took us with several of our friends, bless her. I bought that magazine that features in your film in '64 too. I wrote an essay on the film at the Open Univrtsity. I was aware of the scene as it has been published. It's nice to have it read.

I'm currently 34, and I'm pretty sure my parents took me to a screening of A Hard Day's Night in an actual cinema at some point during the late 90s or very early 2000s. Though I wish I remembered the experience better, I'm glad I had it at all. I was always more a fan of Help! as a film.

I came across a soft cover book of the Hard Day's Night script in my local library in the U.S. It was from 1977 and published by HudsonFineBooks. The book consists of the script to the movie along with stills from the movie that follow the script. I remember at lunch time in high school me and a few people would get together and read the parts from the movie. It took a couple of days to go through the book, because our lunch was only an hour, and half of that was eating.

Hi Andrew, thanks for the video and for jogging my memory, on the evening of April 2nd 2005, I attended a screening of A Hard Day’s Night at Abbey Road Studio 1. Victor Spinnetti was a guest speaker as was Neil Innes. Victor sat in front of me and on leaving he forgot his overcoat. I found myself calling his name and running after him. He was so grateful and proceeded to tell me stories of going round to John Lennon’s house at Kenwood (he said John was his favourite). A lovely kind man. Best wishes, Paul.

What a thrill to discover this rarity, but I'm happy they left it out of the movie. I agree with Lester about its pace, and I don't think Paul exhibited the natural abilities that this scene would require. One of the best parts about A Hard Day's Night is how the exaggerated dialogue in the solo scenes helped to personify the authentic personalities of The Beatles, primarily with John's quick and acerbic yet childlike wit and George's unsentimental perusal. I love this film so much.

I found it quite charming. I saw the movie when it was first released. Much of it couldn’t be heard over the girls screams! In 2007 I got to meet Victor at the Mirage HOtel at the Beatlefest. Got my photo with him. We , a group of us,all met for cocktails later that night. Such an honor to meet someone who was close friend to them. He had some very funny Heather Mills crap..... BTW, I watch your videos almost daily. They are well done and enjoyable.

What a great story about Victor! Though sad about his later years. He always struck me as a kind soul. I can see why that scene was cut. Between the length of it and what probably was a wooden performance from Paul it’s hard to imagine it in the movie. But then again if we had just read the script of the finished movie before having seen it numerous times we might think the same of other scenes. Still it would have been nice to have a shorter scene of some sort with Paul without a lot of dialog. Thanks for another great video.

I used to have the novel of "A Hard Day's Night" which had this scene in it. I remember reading a review of some sort which said that this scene had been cut, in part, due to "Paul's hammy and self-conscious acting!"

That was so much fun. Thanks. However, I can see why the scene was left out. A Hard Day's Night, is a well paced movie and just the right amount of running time. That scene was unnecessary but maybe I'd feel that way if it had been included and another scene removed. Then maybe that scene would now seem superfluous and justifiably left out.

Something I would also like to point out regarding the deleted Sam Ahab scene in Help!. Frankie Howerd, who played Sam, would go on to play the antagonist Mr. Mustard (named after the Abbey Road song) in the 1978 musical jukebox film Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, which featured Peter Frampton and The Bee Gees as the protagonists. Two Beatles associates were involved in the film: George Martin, credited as the film's musical director, and Billy Preston, who played Sgt. Pepper. Sgt. Pepper is Howerd's last film in his acting career before his passing 14 years later in 1992.

It’s rather nice to finally have this recreation of that scene, and to know where it would have fit within the context of the film. But yeah, not only have Paul’s acting skills always been questionable, the scene seems to me to be quite a bit longer than the others’ solo bits and it completely would’ve halted the momentum of the film. As an aside, I always find it rather amusing when you have someone at the level of Paul’s rare brilliance actually not being fantastic at something, in his case, acting. For decades now I’ve seen him in a variety of contexts in skits whether on Saturday Night Live or appearing with Jimmy Fallon and there’s something in his character where he feels he needs to “ham” everything up and it’s just too much. I’m sure you’re well familiar, but if you look up this fellow Stevie Riks on KZbin, especially the clip where he has Paul making a cup of tea, it’s hysterically funny. “Doooooooooooo!!!” 😂

The irony is that he should be good at skits, since he's known to be good at voices and impressions -- you do catch a glimpse of this talent when he's flirting with Pattie in AHDN and when he's reading the newspaper in Get Back. But it seems that as soon as you turn a camera on him, he just becomes so self-conscious and starts to ham it up.

Andrew . I spent an afternoon,and dinner with Walter Shenson when they had the rerelease of a Hard Days Night in San Francisco in 1999 - I can’t believe that was 25 yrs ago. That shook me, I had to look up the date - I’ve got some photos I took of him in the Castro Theatre , and took the film - B&W to an hour photoshop in the same block. I learned much about his feelings about each Beatle as an actor. If I knew how to reach you privately I would tell you what he said with discretion a must . He signed every pix in an entire roll of film, as well as my first edition “ I ME MINE “ leather cover in slipcase signed by George . If I can figure out how to write you where it would not go public,I will.

Loads of fun!! The American film critic Roger Ebert would have loved this! A Hard Day’s Night was one of his absolute faves and I got to talk with him about fairly often. We’d throw out a line of dialogue and see how far we could go. It was hilarious. He’d probably dig the whole AI thing as near the end of his life, that’s basically how he communicated. Oops! Talk about sliding way off topic! How awesome is it that something we’ve loved so dearly and watched and rewatched so attentively for 60 years and we can still be learning more about it! Definitely agree with this scene not being in the film but it would have been great to have a solo paul scene in the film. Maybe that would have saved us from Broad Street??? 😄 Love your channel for the content and your enthusiasm. Outstanding work!

Another fun one, Andrew! I admit not knowing much about Victor Spinetti but he sounds like a really interesting man. And yeah, the Paul scene … like George’s solo one, it takes too long to get rolling and I could see how Paul might not get the right tone. Unlike John’s amazing solo scene, my favorite non-musical moment in AHDN.

I think Richard Lester was full of it ! the dialog was funny and I chuckled quite a bit. it could have still been used if that scene was shortened a little. thanks for sharing this and I'm looking forward to the Help ! video. I liked Wendy Richard in Are You Being Served.

Really good as always. What a great story about the script & Victor Spinetti. He was such a lovely fella. I remember having a drink & a long chat with him at the very first Beatles convention I went to in Sheffield in 1980! On a different subject, I was watching your also great video, ‘Why the Beatles hated Yellow Submarine’ & thought a good follow up would be on the actors who voiced the Beatles & the Blue meanies. I remember the story about the guy who voiced George was never credited because he was a British army deserter who was caught & arrested! Or did I miss that story being covered by you or someone else on KZbin?

I agree with Richard Lester on this one the scene being dropped from the film ringo and George had solo parts which balanced the film perfectly as john said writing im happy just to dance with you for George to sing in the film so George could have a piece of the action

A few months after A Hard Day's Night was released, I bought a copy of the paperback book which was part of the promo for the movie. It cost an acceptable 2 shillings and sixpence and the writing credit went to John Burke, "based on the original screenplay by Alun Owen." Burke wrote dozens of books (I don't exaggerate - I have 26) in the '60s that were mostly based on film and TV scripts as well as some excellent horror and thriller originals. Burke's "novel" runs for 114 pages of text with 8 pages of photos. The Paul-Isla Blair scene deleted from the film appears in the book across pages 89 to 95 and is very close to the script that Andrew has used for his excellent programme. I've always thought that the scene could have worked if rewritten to remove some of Owen's (I presume) parables and diversions such as the treacle toffee story and not have to rely on Paul to carry it. So it is obvious to see why it was cut. Isla Blair may only have been 19 at the time of shooting, but she would have completely dominated the scene and left Paul demonstrating his lack of acting ability. However, it would have been fascinating to see what they did actually film over those two days in April '64. Sadly, we shall never have that privilege.

What a wonderful video Andrew 😊😊😊 it pains me now more than ever before knowing we wil never be able to see it. I was aware of it and knew about some of the scene details but I didn't know it had been destroyed 😢 I thought it'd be hidden away in some dusty file room or somewhere in MPL's vaults 😂 As a late (quite late) theatre actress, I understand more the complexities of having to go through lenghty and complex lines without proper acting training for Paul, even though he was bssically playing himself! Thank you again for the video, the Victor adorable anecdotes and the reenactment of the script! Marvelous, but then your material always is! 👏👏🤗
