Some great tone there.! Stevie had his signal chain that night guitar to wah then ts-10 then fuzz then octavia as he always had his wah first even in the early days then tubescreamer but in sometime 88 or 89 or so would use sometimes the mxr looper pedal to bypass unwanted pedal noise from what I understand .. but seriously y’all have a awesome sounding pedal line and giving me GAS ( gear acquisition syndrome) lol 😂

Actually, his signal was always wah last. Guitar - octavia -fuzz - ts10 - wah - amps. I know it looks different but if you following the patch cables, this is how he routinely ran his pedals.

Whoa whoa whoa….how did I miss this video?!?!? Chris “ King “ a Roger Mayer Octavia, TS-10, a Cesar Diaz modded Fuzz Face 🤯 and which I’m sure is a killer Wah ( I wrote this before I heard you describe it ) I’ve had all these pedals at some point minus a Diaz pedal and regrettable sold some but I used to drool over a rocket ship Mayer Octavia back in the 1990’s and early 2000’s. They were so hard to find back then. I had the old Dunlop Uni-Vibe that was very well made and Kenny Wayne Sheppard has it in his old Rig Rundown but it sounded phenomenal. I love my TS-10 but years ago I would of paid anything and done anything to acquire this set up when I was 16 and looking in the back of magazines for pedals sales. My family all played music in the 1960’s and 1970’s and my Uncle gave me an Italian script Vox Wah that hadn’t been touched since 1972 but I got it working and it sounds immaculate. Always loved your playing and passion for gear Chris. I bought a very early Pedal Pawn Fuzz and was very impressed and knew anything you put out would be top notch since your knowledge and collection of gear is incredible along with your SRV chops…Pedal Pawn represents everything I’ve always loved about playing guitar and playing a Strat though an old JCM 800 before I could find a Plexi but it actually had stunning clean tone and I was shocked because it was a JCM 800 from the 1980’s but man did it produce a very glassy clean tone. Back in 2001 I think it only cost me $859 US dollars and maybe $500 for a mint 1960A cab. My goal was to get the Hendrix 6 4x12’s and 3 JMP’s but I quickly learned that was one full stack was too loud for the small clubs we played never mind 3 😂 now I own a condo and my dream of sound proofing a studio and having an exact Hendrix set up and a SRV Vibroverb with the 15’ inch speaker ( another sublime amp ) is still a dream I’ll make happen one day. But rant aside…I love Pedal Pawn and you guys make top notch gear and have a real passion for the love of the best tones ever played on a Strat ( Hendrix and SRV of course ) I used to always pause and zoom in on the amp that I knew wasn’t a Marshall or a Fender ( at the El Mocambo when it was on VHS and you could rent it at Blockbuster ) and would wonder what is that amp? I knew it was something custom…maybe for certain songs like Third Stone and Sky is Crying with a lot of volume and feedback and now we all know it was a Dumble. Same thing with Eric Johnson’s early instructional DVD’ that, in the beginning of KZbin, you could freely watch and was one of several guitar videos we all watched along with Steve Vai and Malamsteen back in 2004. But man I wish all this gear and Reverb existed when I was a kid even though I had some great Princeton and DR amps and no shortage of Vox Wah’s. Can’t wait to try your Uni-Vibe…sounds spot on. Have you had many units from the 1960’s with the foot switch? I think the foot switch is how Hendrix got a lot of his psychedelic tones on the Star Spangled Banner, Isle of Wight and Norman, OK versions of Machine Gun and Hear my Train Comin’ Live at the Atlanta Pop Festival. It was such a fast speed that I haven’t been able to achieve by simply turning up the speed knob but I guess that’s why we all love vintage gear…oh and the Mayer Axis Fuzz I was lucky enough to find in 2002 and plugged it in the wrong way having never played or seen a real fuzz in person but it had a great tone with a TS-808 in front of it. Do you ever use compression Chris? Outside of the studio…

I dated a girl in the summer of 1990 a few times & by fall the thing had run it’s course. She stopped by my house one night with tickets for a “Blues Fest” at Alpine Valley Wisconsin. We had to leave immediately and it meant 6-hours in a car with her round-trip, so I declined. I would have seen Stevie’s last-show that night. ☮️

My experience with the Tube Screamer is that SRV was amazing in spite of his use of the TS, not because of it. Most of us can’t crank our Fender amps (with no master volume) at 9 or 10, so the TS adds way too much compression to a lower-volume tube amp. It sounds overly saturated and muddy. And reports are that SRV used every model of TS, so particularly circuitry between the models doesn’t seem to matter. My wannabe SRV tones were garbage until I ditched the TS and added a Morning Glory (or other more transparent OD pedals). The tubes only scream with the TS if it’s essentially operating as a boost pedal in front of a very cranked amp, which means that the distorted tone is primarily delivered by cranked speakers and tubes (I.e. the amp, not the pedal) Just my view for the average player who never cranks that tube amp above 4 or 5. What sounds like SRV in your bedroom will sound muddy and over-saturated on stage with a band. Stevie’s sound was never saturated, even when it was crunchy it retained the slap of a more transparent overdriven. Your playing is phenomenal btw and that’s 90% of the reason it sounds like SRV. Sorry - can you tell I’m super frustrated by my time with the Tube Screamer? Lol
@Johnjingleheimerschmidtt
@Johnjingleheimerschmidtt 2 жыл бұрын
Addendum: I see in other comments that you’re using an attenuator. The lack of SRV slap (due to oversaturation and compression) that I’m hearing from the TS in your example appears to be resulting from one of two (or both) things. 1. The tubes are pushed but the attenuator is muffling the sound (which can happen) or 2. The cranked speakers have a lot to do with the slappiness (lol) of SRV’s tone. The latter seems to be the case which is why…. Unless you’re gonna turn your speakers up to 11, a TS will put you in the opposite direction of the tonal quality that you’re seeking. Thanks for coming to my TED Talk

My favorite parts were when you played with the Octavia at 9:24. Man, I sure hope you guys make an octavia style pedal sometime. Especially since the Dunlop Cheesewedge was discontinued and its price is rising on Reverb. I was a fool for not being into guitar pedals back when it was on sale. Never again will I take a break from buying guitar pedals.
