Recreating The Air Filter Hack Used By Apollo 13

It's almost 50 years since Apollo 13 lifted off onto what would become the definition of the 'successful failure', a mission where lives were very much at stake and the teams at mission control had to solve problems they'd not expected to bring the crew home safely.
I wanted to re-create the 'adapter' that the crew had to make which would allow the Lithium Hydroxide canisters from the command module to work with the Lunar module's environmental control system. Using only the things they had on hand the crew had to 'fit a square peg in a round hole' so that they atmosphere would have remained breathable for the return
Some good references for this procedure are on NASA's history site.
www.hq.nasa.go...
history.nasa.g...
I 3D printed my canister prop using a design from Havazik, he was able to put this together in a couple of hours, I'd have taken days.
www.thingivers...
The 3D printer I use is a Prusa MK3 and it was a gift from Prusa Research, It was able to handle the filament running out and resumed after a power cut during the main print.

Unrelated, but apparently the person who wrote the original short film Stowaway hated it, saying it wasn't scientifically inaccurate, but inaccurate engineering wise, as no engineer would build something that can't handle a little extra weight. Some else pointed out that there were parallels in the oil industry were saftey wasn't regarded in designs.

Thanks guys! I was in 8th grade science about a month before the launch, when the instructor was discussing the number 13. He brought up the superstitions regarding that number. During the discussion, he mentioned the upcoming launch and wondered if Apollo 13 would be plagued because of that number. I will never forget that remark and how prophetic it would turn out to be. Like the rest of the world, I prayed for their safe return to Earth. About 10 years ago, I had the chance to meet Jim Lovell at a book signing. I was so choked up when I shook his hand, the only words I could muster were "I've waited 40 years to shake your hand!" Thanks to both of you for re-kindling those memories!! Fly safe! Randy Havener

When I was a kid in the early 80's they sold a toy that was supposed to be swung over your head almost like a cowboy with a rope except that it was a chunk of hose similar to what you used in the video to make that annoying noise (elk call) until they realized that too many kids were being scarred for life from being whipped in the orbital sockets. My grandfather was the VP of Garrett Airesearch's Torrance turbocharger factory. In 1980'ish (1982 maybe?) he showed me a lunar rover they had under a tent near LAX - I'm not sure what facility that was but the rover was all there. It had a white cover over it but I got to lift it up and look underneath. No clue where that ended up!

For the computer nerd in you, Garrett AiResearch also invented/built/used the first complete microprocessor in the late 1960's. It was used in the "computer" on the F-14 Tomcat fighter jet. I think Garrett's mostly known for turbochargers and turbo engines, but they did a ton of stuff for aviation/ flight in general. I think the Turbine Engine Co. and AiResearch here in AZ. are all absorbed into Allied Signal/Honeywell now.

Last summer there was an Apollo Lunar module mock-up in front of the planetarium here in Prague, Czechia. You could reserve a 10 minute window to enter it alone or in pair. Man it was tight for two in there, not to mention for three people. Making this in zero G and such a small place, wow. By the way since last year Prusa is making his 3D printers not even a kilometer away from this planetarium.

Scott needs a 'Scotty'! Yup, in every Star Trek episode where Kirk & Spock get the Enterprise into deep doo doo, it was always Scotty the Engineer that saved the day. Fun video with the reproduction of the Apollo 13 Lith-Hydroxy canister build, well done sir! But next time call a TECHNICIAN to help you (your'assistant' was great), we know how to build stuff and hey, sucking polystyrene vapors into your lungs can hurt that beautiful and brilliant mind of yours. Fly safe and stay healthy while your at it. Excellent work Sir.
