I'm quite jealous!!! I want that panel. I'll tell you my favorite time seeing the display effect was on Trek's episode "Assignment Earth", with Mr. Seven's fancy super computer in his office. That's when they really showed of the display effect and had great sound effects for it, not to mention the interactive computer voice.

This is an amazing work of art. I'm a big fan of all the times Star Trek used this prop (especially Gary Seven's Beta 5 computer) and just ordered this from you on Etsy.

When Apple starts selling the M5 version of the Mac, they should absolutely have this as one of their screensavers. APPLE ARE YOU LISTENING????

@@Freshbrood I meant I am waiting for the M5 chipset for my next upgrade just so I can pretend it is like the M5 from Star Trek. I *hope* we can retrain Siri to respond to other words due to the whole Apple Intelligence that’s coming. 😁

It's the ultimate Simon! Seriously, though this is a work of electronic art and belongs in a museum. OK, I've got to ask, how the light is able to shine through the black acrylic?

Hi! Thanks and sorry for the late reply. It is actually dark grey transparent plexiglass with the backside painted white and then there are three layered lights masks (for the 200 lights total). The lights are on the bottom panel so it gives 10 cm along with the white paint on the back of the cover plexi-top for diffusing into solid lines.

What I've been wanting is one of these panels that will actually attach to a PC, and respond depending on how active the CPU is...

fascinating - ive been writting a software version of this as a skin for my macOS 'Mack the Moose' - talking moose app. instead of animatting the eyes and mouth of the moose, i realized i could drive the Beta-5 animation off the eye and mouth animatton triggers, and went through just like you frame by frame to get a full detlail of the Beta5 segments. cool to see this in a hardware implementation! 🤩 thxu!

Very cool M5 display. You can make something like this yourself using ESP32 and grid RGB panel display. Just have to find a nice smoked plexiglass for it.

Ironic that the original was probably slapped together by the Prop Department in three days and this recreation probably took weeks or months.

Do the original designs exist of what they did build this with and how it was controlled. I am impressed by this build, incredible details. But of course we use lovely led and circuits they did not have. So the nerd in me wants to know what has changed over the years lol

Now, what would be cool would be some way of using a RasPi connected to the PC to communicate with something like HWInfo or SpeedFan or CoreTemp (APIs and info for connection to LCD displays are readily availabl) so that it's level of activity tracks with the CPU Load on your PC.
