Repairs on overhauling of second hand machinery purchased ₹ 2,000 was debited to Repairs Account 200. Right entry Machinery a/c Dr 2000 To Cash a/c 2000 Wrong entry Repairs a/c Dr 200 Rectification entry Machinery Dr 2000 To Reparis a/c 200 To Suspense a/c 1800 My doubt is that why cash cr. entry not consider for rectification. and How can we choose from right entry for rectification.

When you pay the amount for overhauling of a second hand machinery purchased, it is a cash payment which must have been recorded in the cash book with the correct figure i.e. Rs. 200. But, when the posting was done from the Cash Book, it was posted to Repairs A/c on the Dr. Side with Rs. 200 instead of being posted to the Machinery A/c Dr. with Rs. 2,000. So, in the rectification entry Repairs A/c which was wrongly debited with Rs. 200 will be credited and cancelled and Machinery A/c which should have been debited, will be debited with Rs. 2,000. Balance amount of Rs. 1,800 on the credit side will be recorded using the 'Suspense A/c'. Answer to your query: Cash A/c will not be considered in the rectification entry because the amount once recorded in the cash book is considered to be posted to the Cash A/c also as Cash Book is also a representative of Cash A/c to be opened in the ledger. In the book it's given that even after their is error of commission the trial balance will tally So... What is right? 🙄

When a transaction is recorded in the journal or subsidiary books with the wrong amount, it is known as Error of Commission. These errors do not effect the agreement of Trial Balance. Eg. Machinery purchased for Rs. 5,000 was recorded as Rs. 5,500. In the given situation, the error is in Both Machinery as well as Cash A/c as both of them have been debited and credited respectively with Rs. 500 extra. Hence, the said error will not have any effect on the agreement of Trial Balance. Answer to your query: Trial Balance will tally even if there is an error of commission, Conditionally it should effect two accounts at the same time with the same amount on the opposite sides.
