It's European humor. Random as hell. Not quite like UK humor which has a bit more structure but is equally zany, IE Monty Python. In essence Flula was giving them a participation trophy. But only rented for a short period since the trophy shop needed it back. Hence why after a while he just takes it. 'Youre special. But not that special.' and once established as a running gag, it can continue just for it's absurd continuity.
