Recycled Asphalt Driveway Update!!! 2 Years Later….

Just an update to how the driveway looks after a few years, had a few people ask for an update. Still happy with it and a much better upgrade from dirt, sand and gravel!

I like the gravel look- Having the old concrete driveway torn out at our house. The cracks and dips look awful, this looks much better!

*HOW TO FIRM UP THE TOP GRAVEL* Go to large home supply stores and ask fro "damaged portland" bags...they always have them.....and lightly dust the driveway such that the gravel sticks up abobve the fine powder. Think 'powdered donut'. Then lightly rinse with the mist setting of your hose. *Portland will literally CEMENT those gravel into place. And because the bags were damaged the store will give you a huge discount on the price.*

Quite a few years ago I got a load of millings out of the Vac-All, the machine that vacuums behind the milling machine, dumped on our small church parking lot. I spread it all out using a wheelbarrow. The spot where they dumped it is still a little high because it set up before I could get it all spread. But it looks good and set up hard. Of course I was doing this in July with fresh millings.

Had a gravel driveway 150’ and slight hill that was 22 years old and needed fixing. Went with crushed asphalt instead of limestone. The crushed asphalt can be very slippery as it is finer on top than gravel. I would suggest staying with gravel especially because of the slippery slopes!

Glad to see this update video, just saw your original and was wondering how it held up. I have a relatively large driveway (probably about 5-6k sq feet). Estimates for a stamped concrete or even asphalt driveway are insane, but the amount of weeds I am getting on my crushed rock driveway are ridiculous. I think I may go the recycled asphalt millings route for now, have them sealcoat with a hot tar and follow up with a fine milling top coat to roll it in. From various videos that seems to work the best and be about as good as you can get aside from doing fresh asphalt for a fraction of the cost. Even if it breaks down over time to look like the loose rock look, I won’t even be that upset as I don’t really mind that look, just can’t deal with all the weeds. The thick base that this develops should prevent about 90-95% if the weed growth in getting now and will be happy.

try hawk seale to firm everything up, I have looked into it, made to bind millings. a little pricey but worth the money in my opinion. i am going to try it on my driveway this spring after snow is gone, looks legit and I need something to hold up better than gravel with binder. i use to use diesel but diesel breaks asphalt down that is why truckers use it to line their beds when hauling asphalt and for all the tools. i do not have anything to do with selling hawk seale products but I researched it as best as one can and it seems legit. i have to do something after snowplowing and mud season and so on i lose alot of gravel base even with a binder in it so this is the next shot. i am paying 14 a yard for millings, getting 60 yards or so and then using hawk seale so we will see.

Thanks for your video. This helped me decide to NOT use recycled asphalt. I will spend the extra thousands on a paved driveway (12,000 square feet) Yikes. But I do not like the loose material

Makes me wonder if an oil based sealer would help keep it all together and sealed up. I know it’s getting hard to come by and an environmental no no. I can only find it online. Can’t find it in any stores anymore.

What do you think about that comment where the guy says to dust over with portland ciment, I'm so curious how that would work sounds like an ingenious idea, what are your thoughts. Thanks mate ☺️👍👍

I have this down in my shop driveway. If you take a sprayer filled with diesel fuel and spray on it on a hot sunny day, it works awesome to pack it down, I have done it a couple times now. My drive is also about 2 yrs old and will do again this summer.

If you swept the top clean, do you believe it might accept a seal coat? or will it revert back to loose gravel again

I have sealed it twice (spray seal) just to try it and no luck. I believe it may have worked right after it was layed and rolled

@@KendorFarms can confirm it will not last after layed and rolled the top surface seems to get loose and the rocks turn over.

I found it made a nice hard base, but the top is loose. Probably a good idea to use it I think. I bought the calcium from Rona

@@KendorFarms Interesting my county uses grindings on all the secondary roads and you can hardly tell it from the new stuff. The sealer they use is hot tar followed by a very thin covering of grindings that also gets rolled in.

@@thepubliceye That's just standard hot asphalt, using the millings as the aggregate. Every surface has some sort of aggregate. Most interstates reuse the old concrete ground up as the aggregate in a similar fashion when being redone.

Hammond indiana I put asphalt millings on my yard but inspector wants me to get an environmental impact study to test the millings are safe. Anyone had idea if millings are dangerous or I have a inspector that is just talk bs.

That's BS. Asphalt is used all over for HW construction and would have the same runoff. This millings is used nationwide for this application.

Depends on what you're going for. If you're going for a hard top asphalt, paver, or concrete look, then yeah. But compared to a class-5 gravel driveway like a country road, then this looks fantastic.
