I love the sawdust which help me balance the ph level in the bin when i have fresh food more available.😄

That's a good idea, being a stable carbon material I am sure it does that well

Hi Marty, I run my frozen bokashi scraps through the garden mulcher into a chunky salsa and then combine it 1:1 with old and cold horse stall bedding (mainly sawdust). I then leave it for three weeks in a open bottomed composting unit (dalek style) and then feed that to my worms. I also combine the compost with a bit of blue metal crusher dust (very finely sifted) and some compost tea to really get the microbes going. My rationale for doing all this? Worms eat microbes, so semi-matured cold compost is wonderful as worm food!

I've been using sawdust from my tablesaw for years, but when my dad started turning wooden bowls on the lathe, those shavings were the bomb!

If using sawdust I suggest adding a high nitrogen additive as sawdust is 300:1 carbon to nitrogen which is not ideal at all for worms that like 25 to 30:1

Hi Marty, love your videos as always. Could you please explain a bit on how to use worm casting as i have problems with growing the veg and flowers plant. I might use too much. My flower plant leave curl in. Can u suggest what portion of the worm casting i should use to make the potting mix. Is any difference in growing flower plant or veggies. Thanks.
@martysgarden
@martysgarden 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Juan. I would say it's not the castings making the leaves curl. Lot's of things can make plants do that. Use around 10% for best results with all plants mixed into potting mix.

We just picked up a lot of sawdust shavings. How do I add it to my worm bin? Does it need to be composted first, or can I add it raw like it is as a bedding? I also have on hand: somewhat composted horse manure, lots of spent coffee grounds. Also, where did you get your double buckets? Thanks : )
@martysgarden
@martysgarden 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, you need to compost that sawdust first, coffee grounds helps with that. Double buckets?😀

I started composting sawdust and tea leaves in a bucket then all tea leaves got composted early and sawdust still same after 2 months. Then i addes urea mixed with water and sawdust started composting now. Is it good idea or bad? When i use compost in plants will there be to much nitrogen to burn the plants?
@martysgarden
@martysgarden 2 жыл бұрын
Once it's fully composted it should be okay,,the nitrogen heats up and burns out. You could then put it through a worm farm and make it super powered kzbin.info/door/nPkv-JUX4Pqn_LYbykzAtwjoin

You mentioned harvesting a sawmill. That will net you sawdust. You also mentioned shavings are better. Hit up your local cabinet shops and get the stuff from the planers. Maple breaks down the fastest. Also the best leaves to use in your compost pile for the same reason.
