I really wish we would return to glass for most things. I'm old enough to remember milk and Coke coming in glass bottles. I did a blind taste test with friends between coke in glass bottles and coke in plastic...everyone said the glass bottle coke was better. The great thing about glass is how it is chemically inert and can be recycled into oblivion. Even if it escapes into the environment it doesn't cause issues because it's chemically inert. It just sits there until it wears down into particles and joins the sand, or it gets crushed and buried without causing any problems. Plastic is good for many things but we shouldn't be using it for storing drinks, or food in general.
@carbonstar90915 ай бұрын
Glass has a couple of downsides from a transport/cleanup perspective but overall is a really great storage material. I hate that everything is plastic now. I prefer paper/metal/glass over plastic.

@@carbonstar9091 I'm not some environmental nutjob who wants to end plastic, I know it has many important functions. I am just saying glass is superior in many ways and I wish we would return to using it more often. Then again I wish we would return to the days of using wax paper to wrap meat given to us by a local butcher...so I may be a little out of touch lol. The thing is I am not even 40 and yet this is how I grew up. My generation was the last to see these things in many western nations. It really makes me sad to see this.

The upside of having glass is that we won't be full of microplastics. The downside is that transport is heavier, which means more Co2 emissions. Given that the environmentalists in power ONLY cares about co2, we better get used to the plastics.

I worked at a glass recycling plant and when we received dumpsters of glass bottles . We had a system that had a magnet that pulled off ferrous and some sort of electro magnet that put non ferrous metals out the glass. Further down the line the glass was separated by the color of glass. Where it was mixed with crushed blue plate glass and turned into sand size particles and sold to Owens Corning so they could make fiberglass from it. But the the non ferrous metals removed consisted of lost jewelry like rings and necklaces. Plus lots of coins. But there was also lots of lighter materials that had to be removed too.

Hey Jason, I have used this stuff for years in my blast cabinet. About two years ago I was diagnosed with a small ( adenocarcinoma ) lung cancer. Hey Jason, Do you have a plastic granulator? And any chance you guys making lighter duty machines for residential/non-commercial use? I'm a home recycler, trying to prevent everything that comes through my house from going to the landfill. organics are easy with a compost pile, metals and glass, not too hard. Plastics is the one area that I know we can't trust the recycle centers to actually recycle it, so we have to chart our own course. I'm supportive of the precious plastic movement and have some other ideas where their methods break down, but I need to be able to granulate the plastics to a relatively small size, 1/4 inch or so. Of course a machine that could reduce copper wire, glass and plastics would be the ideal. The Entry price for the smaller machines I've found is $1500-2500 (some from china and others that make the precious plastics versions of the machines). If you could make a machine in that range or close to it, you may open a wider market.

@@CT-brook-geology-gold-gemsnot necessarily. You're missing all the red spectrum in glass. Red glass can be made but it's more expensive. And technically in light, unlike paint, when you combine all the primary colors of light (red, green, blue) you get white. It's a good question though and sort of makes me want to pulverize certain colors exclusively to see if there's much difference in say like all dark blue glass turned into sand? Compared to all brown or all clear glass.

The paper and any metallic foil would be fine. Paper just forms humus and finely-divided metals will corrode away. The adhesive and inks may be benign or not depending on their formulation. However plastic coatings would generally break down into microplastics. It is probably more of a concern if plastic containers can end up in the feed. The jaw crusher would generally flatten these rather than breaking them up so a coarse screen could remove them. An inappropriately-sized plastic container might just clog the jaw crusher.
