Hey guys and gals, today we are going to start the process in recycling HDPE - High Density Polyethylene. In this video we will be cutting up the HDPE and get it ready to melt down to use to cut out a sling shot. Recycling HDPE is a good way to keep unwanted waste out of the dumps. I also cut of the lable part but leave it in the sun for a week or so. Then ill take sandpaper and sand of the lable. Its alot of work but it helps if you dont have alot of plastic

Way to go! Really reduces the size and is more manageable by cutting it down. Please be careful when melting that stuff. It can give off some nasty fumes you won't want to breathe in. Just looking out for ya Spicy

Coin Sense And Nonsense yeah and when I want to make different designs in my plastic it makes it easier. When you melt the plastic at 350 degrees that is the safe melt range for number 2 plastic HDPE. I have a chart for each grade of plastic. Yes if you heat it up to 500 degrees it starts burning and will put off bad fumes. I will touch on that in the next video. Thanks for looking out bud.

A lot of labels can be removed by filling the container with hot water and waiting a minute. The heat softens the adhesive and the label should peel right off.

HEAT GUN OR HAIR DRYER will soften up the adhesive on the Label and will peel off easy!

Soak your labels in water the paper will separate from the adhesive then use adhesive remover of some type to get it off
@BackwoodsRaised
@BackwoodsRaised 4 жыл бұрын

I have found that a heat gun softens the adhesive and allows most labels to be removed easily. Not sure what I will use to clean the adhesive off if it is even necessary.

Yeah I need to try that most of my jugs are old and the glue has dried pretty good. Maybe soak them a while.

I realize I'm tardy to the party so you may have figured it out by now but acetone will take the stuff off of the coffee container very easily, that's what I do. I just buy nail polish remover but I make sure that it's the 100% acetone kind, there is a few different kinds. Just soak a rag in it and it wipes right off.

Yeah, I just started playing around with it within the last month or so. I'll admit, it's pretty addicting lol but at least it doesn't really cost anything.

Done a few of these. The lids on my local milk jugs are not #2. I tend to cut mlk jugs with a razor knife similar to flower petals and then use tin snips to cut off 2inch squares. For me and this is a solution in search of a problem. My slingshot turned out barely acceptable. Mallet turned out great. Bath toys are feasible. I use a toaster oven and haven't had much luck with multiple runs in the same pan.

Tommy Wheeler I have to look up about the lids. A lot of people say it's HDPE but I think it's LDPE and if so small bits won't hurt to much it will melt down just as well. I'm going to get and old oven and use it and we will see how well it works for me. I just have to get my hand better. Thanks for your input and thanks for watching.

Backwoods Raised. Build some sort of mold or press. My first run twisted like a pretzel. Glass pan worked twice before sticking. Parchment paper ignited. Metal pans stuck too much. Vegtable oil didn't help as a mold release. Oven will work great. 325 f worked best for me. Good luck! Most of the current KZbin stuff leaves out the details. Thanks for your efforts.

Those heat bonded labels ate tough to get off. I have just been scraping them off. Sometimes I use a knife and I've tried a paint scraper. They work, but leave a static clingy mess. 3M discs load up quick and I suspect sandpaper will too, but I haven't actually tried it. Save your #4 for somebody else or recycle it if there is a local program. Did you ever do anything with your plastic? I looked, but I didn't find any videos that you made on it. BTW, aviation snips work well to cut up the thick parts.

Ron Yerke thanks for the info. No not yet. I had surgery on my right hand and wrist so I been healing from that. But please stay tuned. If you saw the one video. I bought me an oven to melt the plastic down and I plan on getting to melt some plastic this week. I have it all set up now. Thanks for watching.

Easiest way to remove stickers from the plastic it to use a heat gun.
@BackwoodsRaised
@BackwoodsRaised 6 жыл бұрын
Jonathan Pate I got a heat gun and I plan on using it. It seems that a lot of people that do this plastic project, these stickers are a problem. Most just cut around it but that's a lot of waste. I have about 40 jugs saved up now and I'm going to try different things and choose the best.

Backwoods Raised, it is a lot of waste when you leave the stickers but it doesn’t take much to get the stickers off either. But good luck with it. See ya in the next video.
