Red Ball Does a Little Trolling has an automatic death button which allows to death warp in every level. Even with this, a death warp in level 10 is certainly impossible due to the point where you have to die at in order to warp being unreachable. Little bit of red ball trivia for y'all

Man, I feel bad now. I was trying to figure this out about about a month ago, I scoured the on death code and couldn't find any code that seemed to change position (which is what I assumed would happen). I figured it may be a quirk of the way Box2D handles destroying objects, but I never looked further into it, and the idea of it changing layers without having it's position transformed never crossed my mind. Congrats to everyone who figured this out, it's unfortunate this didn't lead to many more possible time saves but it's still nice to be able to put an official, confirmed reason for it working. And as always great editing.
@Maximum3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Yep, it ended up having nothing to do with Box2D
@sage52963 жыл бұрын
it's kinda just an odd quirk of flash, but everything that's not a child of something else uses the stage coordinate system. It's just that things that aren't a child of something else (and hence aren't rendered) don't usually have x/y positions or checks on those positions, so this sorta stuff doesn't happen often
@DreadKyller3 жыл бұрын
@@sage5296 Yeah i get that, was just saying I never considered that when I was looking through the code, tunnel vision was too strong.
@realperson99513 жыл бұрын
i still kinda dont get how the red box moved over the red ball to reach the flag
@DreadKyller2 жыл бұрын
@@realperson9951 Sorry this is late I didn't look back here since. If you're still curious the red box displayed in the hack represents the location relative to the camera that red ball is relative to the world. The Stage is the area we see, what's within the camera. Redball's position is always close to the center of this, so for example Redballs position inside the stage is around x=275 y=200 (give or take due to camera tweening, smooth movement, and also because Redball is not positioned exactly in the center). However the entire level is larger than what we can see. Stage = What we see in the camera Level = the entire level, including outside of the camera Everything in the level has an x and y position, relative to an origin point 0,0. To figure out the position of an object in the camera you can take it's x and y position and subtract the camera's position (which is it's upper-left corner), if that position is more than 0 and less than the width/height of the camera depending which axis you're checking, then it's within the Stage. While Redball may be positioned at x=275, y=200 within the camera, if the camera/Stage itself is positioned at x=200,y=100 in the Level then Redball's position in the Level is x=200+275 y=100+200 or x=475, y=300. When Redball dies, due to insufficient cleanup or Redball's object in the game, it's position in the world (in example above x=475, y=300) gets set relative to the Stage/camera. Since in the example above the camera is at x=200, y=100 the new Level position of Redball would be x=200+475, y=100+300 or x=675, y=400. It just so happens that for any given location A in the Level, there's an equivalent location B where when this occurs at location B the resulting Level position will be A. Taking a checkpoint as location A, and calculating what position B you'd need for it, most of the time that position isn't useful as it's impossible to die there. Another way to think of this is that it basically adds the camera's x and y location to Redball's location when Redball dies, this isn't really 100% accurate, but it's another way to conceptualize what's happening. The red box is just a visual indicator for where Redball's position will be set if it died at that given point in time. Which is positioned at Redball's position in the Level, if it was set relative to the Stage/camera's top-left corner. Have L be the origin of the Level (0,0) Have S be the top-left corner of the camera/Stage Have P be an x, y position Position before Death: L + P Position after Death: S + P Prior to death the position P is relative to the Level. After death the position P is set relative to the Stage, yet it's x and y values do not change, since S and L are (likely) two different positions, this results in the position of Redball moving. The amount moved will be effectively how far away S is from L. Further away will incur larger changes in position.

I suppose that there might not be a ton of preserved footage from supposedly failed runs from long ago, but it's interesting to think that maybe someone actually set an amazing record for this level years ago and never knew.

it's extremely precise so i wouldn't be surprised if that was the first case on video, but it's also very easy to miss (i only knew this could work because of a couple quirks of the game i knew at the time and i had to be paying attention to the audio) so it's possible it's on some random walkthrough somewhere
which is weird since its a region thing. it would be like trying to correct someone who spells color vs colour with the opposite one not understanding both are correct.

Pausing removes the event listener for the game's update cycle, and when you pause and unpause for under a second, the tweener engine never shuts down, which means that the update cycle now happens after the level is tweened. Spikes rely on a graphical pixel-wise check for determining sprit overlap, comparing the spike sprite against 16 points around the outer edge of redball. This however compares against the last rendered frame! With the tween occurring between the prior frame render and the check, this shifts redball's position and the 16 points that are checked, while leaving the spikes where they were. I'm presently working on a hack to separate out the tween render and update phases to generate clear visuals for this
