The time is NOW to reveal the first two completed makeovers at our Red Brick Redo project! Step inside the front door and let me show how we took these blank slate interiors and turned them into a cozy and colourful living space paired with a moody-hued entry in this historic home for a mom and her two kids. You’re about to get the 411 on decorating and embracing the quirks of an older home, being fearless about mixing cheery and dramatic hues, tackling furniture placement in an oddly shaped room, creating storage where none exists and SO. MUCH. MORE.

The living room is gorgeous. All the colors are yummy. The table and chairs in front of the south window are so inviting! The entry is sophisticated and the light fixture says “interesting, fearless people live here!”

Also I appreciate how you put a dresser in the front entryway. I feel the need for bigger entryway tables than are typically used. Those small delicate half-tables can be beautiful, but not always practical.

I loved his house from this first time you showed the outside. The inside was definitely a challenge to decorate but Sarah, you’ve outdone yourself! I love how how you divide rooms into separate sitting areas yet blend them together so nicely. The colours and artwork are amazing, you have brought so much life into the house! Love it and love your shorter hair 💕

First, let me say I do like much that Sarah does, and I am thrilled to find her again after her disappearance from HGTV or whatever channel she used to show up on here in CA. She is a joy to watch and is genuinely helpful in her explanations of why she does what she does. There are several things I like and respect in these two rooms. It just seems as though something, something different on the walls other than that glaring white could have offered so very much more atmosphere while sacrificing nothing. I do love the living room color scheme and the artwork works perfectly even though it is far too formulaic for my taste. Art bought just to match decorating never seems much like art to me. But then, not everybody loves or even likes art, much less buys it as they go through life, so they find themselves buying whatever “goes” with the room. And this certainly does, beautifully. I notice that the wood tones and the mirror frame and the mantle detail and the curtain rods and the chair legs all bring out a brown that goes well with the gold ceiling fixture. Lots of the same color but sparingly used. Clever. And the greenish yellow on the chairs is so beautiful with the grey of the drapery and upholstery. It all looks wonderful together. In the entry, most of it is a miss for me. Perhaps it’s the oh, so boing, too matched runner and the lack of overall color. I understand why they chose the dark paint for the stairway - function. But I believe a runner would have offered far more interest and, if good enough quality, would have lasted through all the children and dog traffic. Another missed opportunity in my opinion. And again, a different wall color could have been huge. That, with the confused flooring - why not take up that small amount of stone and make it all wood? Budget perhaps? it’s a big house with tons to do. I mentioned elsewhere that I think the light fixture would be really cute in a less important room, but that the entry is such an important room that it deserves something more substantial, especially since the ceilings are so tall that more white, white, white just creates a missed chance for more impact. A neat modern black with gold piece instead of more white with gold? After all, entryways set the tone. And lastly, I adore the exterior of this house. Lucky owner. But it is in dire need of landscaping for it truly to have good curb appeal. I hope Sarah addresses that when the interiors are finished. What a spectacular place this will be.

Love Sarah's artwork always ! I years ago saw Sarah's own home with paintings. Her children were still very young but I adored Sarah's use of color throughout her home. I still remember them in detail, the colors, paintings, colored glassware and vivid memory of the daughter's rooms because I adored it so much. Sarah, u r my favorite and your designs are timeless.

I have watched all of the series Sarah had and mostly love her work. I am not a fan of the primary colors and modern prints she used but when the design called for it she could do traditional & antique well. I recently found her online, looked ahead to this series of reveals and first impression is....oh no! all that gray. I was never a fan of gray when it was all the rage and so seeing this home done primarily in grays and whites and variations, I am underwhelmed. Not a fave project. What happened to the color the homeowner said she loved. And the mint, blue, peach her daughter LOVED? ugh. so over the gray.

Every home should have an entry way with a closet to hang coats, stack shoes, knob or two for keys ... it's essential for practical reasons and to avoid clutter. Noticing the room with the bohemian furniture, large table and chairs had movable storage presumably to hang coats and so on. If your friend/homeowner is willing to part with her bohemian table & chairs I'll take them off her. Loving the kitchen wallpaper! Wishing your friend is loving her newly decorated home with your design sensibilities.

I have always loved traditional and antiques but have downsized to a small two bed two bath house on the beach and am going to contemporary. I found a pristine Haywood Wakefield set with dog bone chairs and and wishbone table. Your color scheme in this house is exactly what I am going for and this has given me some great ideas. I have a huge storage problem so everything I buy must have doors or drawers. It has helped me decide how to use the colors.

Beautiful lovely elegant relaxed and beachy. Personally I would have put a plush runner up the stairs with brass rods to hold them in, continuing on the corridor to the kitchen, in a muted gray traditional design. Very happy to see this house. A super choice. Not loving the staircase color. Thought a lighter color, perhaps the color inside the hall ceiling light could have worked. Or, at least place an inlaid design piece on the riser part of the stairs, so as you come in hallway, and walk up stairs you are looking at something pretty. Maybe there is some historical facts about this house and something to do with that could be inlaid? Otherwise, always, a pleasure watching, and learning. 🌞👏👍✌🌞

Absolutely love the ceiling light and great advice for odd-shaped rooms.
