Of course it was luck. Lucky that he had the skil and split second timing to realise what went wrong and to implement the correct course of action to recover. During the post race interviews he explained what he did wrong and why he g-stalled the one wing. PS. If he had just "pulled up the yoke to make it go higher" he would have still been dead! He had to lower the nose to break the stall first before he could pull up in a controlled fashion. Take it from another pilot - THAT TAKES SOME BALLS! Personally, if it was me, truth be told, I would probably be dead!

WOW! At 2:35 to 2:55 the slow motion video as his wings touch the water, then slow the plane and his wheels touch water too, yet he still has reactions to pull up and save his life. What amazing flying, I know from motorbikes how little time we have to react when something goes wrong, yet these guys are doing it 2 times as fast (reaction wise, and in 3 dimensions). Stunning flying skills.....

Oh yes I work near that crash site near Reno (KRTS) and even though I was not there that fateful day I can see these pylon hits and water hits and I am so glad they are not more than basic air balloons and evacuated water basins. Again, I wonder if that PB pilot lived but then again I feel safer just thinking all these pilots need to worry about are themselves and the crash boats. I find that very reasonable under the circumstances.

You've got to think: when ur sideways, there's nothing holding u up in the air really. So the plane already starts to drop. If u want to save the plane, you have to a) apply rudder (which won't do much) or b) roll out quickly and then pull on the stick as hard as possible (which will put a ton of g's on ur body).
