Shure there is. Most of the pilots have the reserve in a front container. Also the athletes are checked for beeing equiped with a proper helmet and a spine protector.

Is this race a marathon or running race then glide?

It is a relay race (team race). Each team consists of a montain runner, a paraglider, a biker and a kayaker. This video shows only a small part of the paragliders task. For more information please have a look in the video description.

Well, I don`t think they are doing so badly. Of course not everything is perfect. This is due to various factors, e.g. extremely exhausting running before take off, line tangles because of running, time pressure and therefore too rushed take off preperations, small gliders which react much more spicy and fly a lot faster, ... For all that, you can not compare a take off here with the average paraglider take off, where you have plenty of time and tranquility with a big smooth glider ;) The weather itself was quite thermal and a little gusty, but overall very good.
