The realistic strategy would be the one used at waterloo. Wellington's army used box formation with bayonets sticking out. Marshal Ney's cavalery could only circle the formation while being shot at.
@Cookiesdiefrombehind10 жыл бұрын
This battle is so different in the novel. The formation was supposed to be in a forest, as I recall and visibility was very low. Also, it was on a much larger scale so the enemy could not actually spot the formation. Whenever the charging cavalry wanted to exit the forest there would be pikes and shields guarding the exit. This was because the troops were all hidden within the trees and the lookouts would signal them with drums and flags.

The scale of Chinese battles were often much larger than other cultures, life was cheap and a 10000 men is considered a small force but that is actually 2 full Roman legions in comparison to western counterparts. So that formation may span a huge distance and not easily seen by the enemy commanders. Also it is not easy to flank the army because of the distance, visibility, and the circular shape of the formation. A well trained force with good commanders and tacticians employing battle formations makes big differences, and during the warring years, all men were born soldiers. Its not an uncommon thing to have battle formations, happens all over the world. Just a few of these are more exaggerated.

1. No, horses not crashing into a shield formation isn't a strange thing. Horses won't run into obstacles if they have a free way to go, like happens in this sequence. This tactic dates back to ancient egypt (actually first battle recorded in human history, Ramses II vs the hitites). 2. Yes, this is most likely a lame depiction of what happened in reality. If not regarding the tactic itself, at least one could think that the horsemen would... You know... Attack them meanwhile waiting to see what happens. 3. They don't attack because they are carrying swords. Straight swords. On fucking horseback. Good lord. Veredict: The basic tactic isn't magic at all. But empires of all periods of history (starting with the very same Ramses II that used this tactic for the first time) have greatly exaggerated their victories, to the point this looks way, way, way too effective on the chinesse part, and too moronic on the other guys (mongols? And they don't have bows?) part.

You wouldn’t want to try this formation out in real life. The formation seems far too intricate to organise and too many things could go wrong. Such as the opponent seeing the formation and thinking ‘well, they obviously want me to go into those gaps...so I won’t’. A good cavalry charge would break it up in no time. A simple 5 man deep ring would be more effective. I think this was based off a formation called the 8-gate something or other, but there’s no actual historical attestment/description of what it looked like or how it was used. Actually the turtle formation was used in early chinese battles.... the turtle formation was used in both siege and defense battles and was effective i would say 80% of the time. Please.... do some research before commenting.

in reality only dumb general would engage that formation head on... especially on that clear plain...
@pavelivanov29993 жыл бұрын
This formation can easily be broken as it is just a few lines deep, not that charging head on is the best tactic. I would like to see them attacking in this clever formation. That would be so fun.

So CaoCao had the political advantage and can gather army in the imperial name(fast and good cause).SunQuan has the solid Base his father and brother had left him so he can do what he want without the worrying of backstabbing(this CaoCao cant do).LiuBei has the best man resource for his popularity.

Two ranks of well-trained infantry are enough to break a cavalry charge. At the Battle of Jalandhar, a force of 2000 Rajput infantry were able to hold off 30,000 Mongols under Duwa Khan for two days until reinforcements could arrive from Delhi. The only safe way to attack infantry formations are either archers & artillery or other infantry- unless you are Rohirrim & have Gandalf on your side :P

so before the battle of the red cliff,CaoCao has the emperor and the government to back him up,so he is politically the offical and justice side.SunQuan just gained his throne and has little control over the court,but the effort his family has made makes Wu a solid base for him to develop. LiuBei's royal blood makes him extremely popular with the majority, he can gather the talented people better than others

That last guy on the horse was so shook. They should have kept him alive to spy for them with promise of gold and bread. If he refuses then dress him up as a woman and have him dance for them.

@양정원-j6x8 жыл бұрын
And then? Then they do what? And u know if all those cavarly try to get off from horses the formation will be broken and it will be rly messy so it can be a great chance for enemy to attack suddenly or shoot the arrows again
@babylonian58 жыл бұрын
양정원 well, compared to what they did here, anything would be batter to be honest.
I feel like that's the difference between Hollywood action movies and Chinese action movies. Movies like this put any semblance of plausibility on the back burner and force you to suspend your disbelief for the sake of the action. It's not for everyone and it doesn't always work but when it does work the action delivers on a level that no western movie has been able to match.

I wish a director would try depicting it with a more realistic interpretation of the source book, no Dynasty Warrioring armies left and right.
@controversialopinions36598 жыл бұрын
Well what were you expecting from a John Woo picture? That guy directed "Face/off", "Broken Arrow" and "Mission Impossible 2", being over the top and free of any grounding in reality is kind of his thing. But if you are hoping to see a more realistic depiction on the three kingdoms era in china that is more true to the source material of the novel "The Romance of Three Kingdoms" then may I suggest the original 1994 "Romance of Three Kingdoms" TV series. It is so true the source material of the novel that there and entire scenes taken from the book with dialog taken word for word. Just stay away from the 2010 remake of that TV series, that remake is even more cheesier that this video and far less entertaining.

they scatter thus further solidifies that they were confused from the initial archer bombardment and dust cover. Forgot to note that behind the main formation being used is that the main force is behind it (Indicated that the command center wouldn't be in the middle of that formation). SO whomever goes around gets picked off. Thus reason why formation works is the initial confusion and chaos caused, once inside everyone is scattered thus command structure is lost causing more confusion.

While It might be a bit ridiculous accuracy wise, you cant say Chinese films are boring.

What I like about this movie is that they had the right style of armor. Han Dynasty armors indeed looked like those portrayed in this movie. This is probably one of the few Chinese movies which had the right type of armor instead of those fictional armors. I heard that the moviemaker had consulted a Chinese archaeologist for the armors and weapons.

I'm not a historian, nor am I trying to sound like one. Chinese Antiquity crossbows were so cumbersome, they were usually deployed in 2 man teams with a shield to act as the loader, to position the crossbow, and the shooter. Also mainly used to repel and advance troop formations.
