Never forget that Agent Ross always knew how dangerous John was when he showed up with an entire detachment of the US Army just to storm his homestead. John really shines when he has something to fight for. Throughout the main story of RDR2 he was just a kid fighting because he was angry and it's all he knew. He was a screw up. Then when he went to avenge Arthur we see how deadly he is when he's determined. When the odds are against him and everything is on the line, that's when John Marston is at his best. We see it again in RDR1, when he's fighting for his family and nothing can keep him from his goal.

You can take the man away from gunslinging but you can’t take the gunslinger out of the man. What I love about this mission is that in those first few missions in the epilogue leading up to this, John is out of his element. He’d never done ranch work to this extent before and it was blatantly obvious to his employers and the other hands that he wasn’t who he said he was. John was unsure of what he was doing when it came to milking cows and building fences, but as soon as shots were fired, John sprang into action. It was like he went on autopilot and that outlaw instinct kicked in. For the first time since arriving at Pronghorn, John was the one that knew what he was doing. For a brief time in his mind, John was home with the gang again. Despite just narrowly escaping that life previously, John does seem most comfortable when he’s staring down the barrel of a gun. No matter what he may tell himself or try to do otherwise, he enjoys it. He’s just like Arthur was. They were both taught since their adolescence to fight and survive. It’s all they know how to do. When he opens up that chest and pulls out his guns and Arthur’s hat for the first time in years…goosebumps man.

Main difference is that back with the gang he was doing it out of self-interest and greed, to protect bad people. But here he was doing something selfless to protect good people for the first time in his life despite it not being a "smart" thing to do or in his interest. That's why I love Epilogue I so much, it's such a wonderful and satisfying story of a man making a genuine attempt to change his life for the better and succeeding, but in a very non-sentimental way.

I’ve loved the character of John marston since 2010 And it pains me that most new fans don’t understand his character at all. His development, background and overall impact is the best id say. Everything he overcome from being a kid to a loving father and husband who was the baddest man alive in America and Mexico. He went down fighting and sacrificing himself for his family. And he became the ultimate legend of the west

I recently (I say recently I mean my most recent playthrough bc I finished the story like weeks ago) I forced myself to stop doing story missions at one point (I think it was before the Macdougal mission "The Prodigal Son Returns (To Yale)) to get legend of the west. And it was poetic how I confronted Dutch with the outfit on. I thought of it like that since John left Dutch and since that moment, he became a better man, an honorable figure, a *Legend* because he set himself free from the gang life

The best thing about when they use this track for the first time in the epilogue, they genuinely make you feel what John feels. After the gruelling ending you the player go into the prologue understanding what was sacrificed to give John this chance, and that you shouldn’t waste it. Every mission leading up to this one has John struggling to hide who he really is to the rest of the ranch. It gets pretty frustrating in fact, and then Ranch is attacked and people almost died. Abigail is 100% right for trying to keep John out of it but it’s at this point you and John couldn’t be more on the same page. We SHOULD be hiding and sitting this one out, but these people who have been good to you were hurt by a larger ranch trying to force them out. It’s a perfect situation of good people being pushed around by a Bully. Helping them is the right thing to do, maybe not for your family but you have the ability to help these people back and thus you feel obligated to. The chorus hitting just as the shots go off is perfect, it’s the climax to all that build up. To hear it blasting as you shoot bad guys and your friends all lament about your shooting as they no doubt have their suspicions about you confirmed. You are John in that mission, you mysteriously arrived on this ranch and now you’re here protecting these people like some hero in a book.

American Venom is the last bit of Arthur that lives on through John. Arthur would've been so glad to see John evolve into the man he became. Taken from another comment from the actual song in RDR2, Micah probably shit his pants once he heard gunshots and his men screaming on that day. Arthur came back from the grave and lived on through John, just to finish business and at the end of the day. Sadie and Charles only helped John avenge his one and only true "brother" Arthur took revenge but it was John's doing. You know for a fact Arthur was smiling the whole time from whatever part of the underworld he was in. The only true American Venom is revenge, despite what Arthur said, revenge is a fool's game, but as the old adage goes, an eye for an eye a tooth for a tooth and a nail for a nail. This is John's redemption, to prove a point it wasn't a vain sacrifice, he was saved multiple times by one person and the only way to return the favor was to kill the rat and backpoking snake.

The most significant instrumentation difference from the classic Marston theme from the first game are the extra brass flourishes. Easiest to hear at 3:24, the loudest brass in that section isn’t in the original theme, yet it feels so natural. There were probably changes they could’ve made that would’ve messed up the feel of the theme, but the changes they made just work. As for the thematic elements of the differing instrumentation? Well, in the epilogue John is still an outlaw, and his time with the gang remains fresh. This version of the theme is more bombastic as a result, especially American Venom. The brass and guitar take center stage, and the vocals are buried in the mix so as to almost be absent entirely. This part of John’s story is about his revenge. Conversely, the version in the first game is quieter, more simplistic, and melody-driven. The vocals are prominent in the mix. John’s time with the gang is an unwelcome memory resurfacing despite his best efforts. This part of John’s story is about his redemption. Overall, I really like this version, but I would’ve preferred a rendition more faithful to the original for one stupid reason: the original’s sound quality isn’t great. A 1:1 recreation with the better recording equipment and live performers used for this game would’ve been sublime.
