I would have done the ending of this scene a little differently and more realistically: Mary: "Oh Arthur, run away with me right now and don't look back!" Arthur: "I want to, more than anything i want to... but i can't... because Rockstar didn't write any alternative option for me to run away with you. Even if i did run away with you then the ending of this sequel in the Red Dead Redemption videogame series will not make sense and John Marston will not be able to buy Beechers Hope and therefore Red Dead Redemption 1 can never take place. I love you Mary Linton and i always have but you're a fictional character and your voice is done by Julie Jesneck and mine by Roger Clarke." Mary: "Oh Arthur, i don't... i don't understand?" Arthur: "Me neither. I've been shot more than hundred times and died many times but i'll die of Tuberculosis. I have to press the triangle button to get on my horse. If i tap the X button my horse will run faster. My satchel is relatively small but it holds hundreds of items and it doesn't have any weight." Mary: "Oh Arthur..."

When I'm around the camp, I feel a sudden urge to antagonize Micah, I have no problem with that though. Mary: Ohh Arthur, it's that giant I've been talking about. I loved each and every cutscene with them. Both actor‘s performances are amazing. And even if you decline Mary, the cutscene and the way Arthur is declining is different depending on you being high or low honor (at least in the first mission). That game‘s a masterpiece.

What is it like when he's declining her at low honour ?
@The0anju
@The0anju 5 жыл бұрын
Well the differences are so subtle, that I first thought I remembered it in a wrong way, but I found two videos on youtube of the first Mary Mission where Arthur declines, that clearly show the differences: in one video Arthur doesn‘t look at her when he declines and leaves without looking back (Mary looks very heartbroken in this one), in the other one he looks at her quite gently and turns back at her when he leaves. In the second chapter I still experienced with high or low honor, that‘s why I came across both versions, I have no idea if all cutscenes have these subtle differences depending on the honor. That game is just stunning and so rewarding in its details.

I don’t understand how anyone can blame Mary for the outcome of her and Arthur’s relationship. Especially seeing how she made a concerted effort to be with him after it was all said and done, and Arthur rebuffs her with yet another “I just need some time to be with you”. How long is she supposed to wait exactly before he realizes what’s important to him? A year? Another 5 years? A decade? Arthur seems to have missed the very lesson he struggled to teach John in the later chapters; running away and never looking back. I don’t fault Arthur for being loyal to the remaining members of the Van Der Linde gang, and I definitely don’t blame Mary for wanting more out of their relationship than unkept promises and an absentee spouse.

At 27:35, Mary judges Arthur depending on his weight or how clean he is. These are the different things she says: Overweight: “You look... well. You used to be so skinny. I feel like it is so easy to see how Mary feels towards Arthur. At the end of the first mission after rescuing Jamie, I feel like Mary wanted to say how she felt to Arthur, and again at the end of the second mission after going to the theatre with him, but all that came out is ‘run away with me’. To me it’s like Mary is almost worried to say that she loves Arthur still, in case it has the same outcome as the last time that happened. It’s heartbreaking receiving the goodbye letter and it’s clear to see that Arthur felt that way too, especially with what he wrote in his journal after. Mary did her best to try and stop thinking about Arthur, and giving the ring back to Arthur wasn’t out of spite, but love. Mary and Arthur loved each other when it was impossible to be together. It hurts so much to see Mary at the end of the epilogue, on her own at the grave of the person who she clearly still loves. The two of them evidently wanted to be together, they just couldn’t. It really is truly saddening the way that rockstar ended their relationship, and the way that Arthur’s time in a cruel world came to an end

Sadly at the time Arthur has clarity to do the right thing is when he is running out of time because of his declining health. If he only had enough time in his hands he can fix John's predicament and later to start anew leaving behind the past.

OK, I noticed a LOT of understandable flack on Mary's end but she makes a good point: Arthur's choices are destructive. He's killing, lying, stealing, running, and more. Choices like those have severe consequences. She also admits that it's wrong of her to ask Arthur for help, especially after everything her father did. She knows this and it's clear she hates having to do it. But he's the only one who'll stand up to her father and who Jamie would listen too. Look at it from her perspective; she's likely being abused by her bully of a father, who BTW drove his own son away to the point of joining a cult and possibly suicidal. She's the only one keeping this trainwreck of a "family" together. Alone. She doesn't have 10+ people looking out for her. So to her? Arthur is being the selfish one. In the end? She dose the right thing: she let's him go. She dose love him but she knows that neither of them will ever change. They'll never be a couple again. But maybe being friends is enough.

Arthur wasn’t a child when they met. He understood the gravity of the life he kept on living. It’s not fair to dismiss what Arthur himself says at the end of the game, “I just feel like a fool” “I had a son” “I had a girl who loved me and ((I)) threw that away”. The last letter actually made me a little teary. Arthur knows he can’t change anything, the one person who cares about him has said her peace and has her own life away from his. The one thing who understood him for who he was, has now gone. Knowing he’s only got a short time to live, he has a choice what he does with that time, he has a destiny that does not need to be tied with Dutch. A man fighting with a giant wouldn’t be more from the truth, because he didn’t bring his walls down, he didn’t want to accept that the world was changing and so where the people around him. Being apart of that gang for 20 years brainwashed Arthur, just like everyone else in it. This letter was finally the truth that Arthur needed, to understand that people make changes and choices outside gang life, and that gang life is a shell of a person.

I wish rockstar did more with Mary and Arthur, it seems like such a short story between them, and that’s why people always misunderstand Mary for using or manipulating Arthur but if you actually want to know the hole story it’s kinda like a hidden story with all the pictures and hidden dialogue you can find randomly. Rockstar just did a bad job at explaining the story between them, it seemed rushed. Why religion exists in the first place. People became so fed up with mundane, painful, and short life on this earth that they decided that the worship of this "thing" or that "thing" could buy them a ticket into a better place. Maybe a couple of pedants ate the wrong shrooms thousands of years ago which led them to suggest that so and so religion should be established so that one could achieve "eternal life." But ironically they made the world itself even worse with religious contention and war, pulling them even further into despair with the world that they so hate. How ironic are humans?

The story of Arthur and Mary kinda makes a key part in why the story ends so sad
@ghawkins1995
@ghawkins1995 4 жыл бұрын
I think the whole purpose of Mary was to show Arthur’s vulnerability prior to being diagnosed with TB. I noticed the body language from Arthur and Mary- they are both in pain and sorrow and seeing each other is essentially reopening old wounds. In Saint Denis, his anguish is pretty plain to see by his body language around Mary. They both made choices that reflected their moral code; Arthur chose to pursue his outlaw life due to his prioritizing loyalty to the gang over all else, despite the feelings he still has for Mary. Likewise, Mary chose to follow her family’s wishes (which wasn’t a bad choice- Mary could’ve had the same fate as Annabelle and Bessie). As a side-note, I disagree that Mary nothing more than a manipulative or abusive person. Sure, being around her father likely spurred those behaviors to a degree; however, in both of her first two letters to Arthur, she is not demanding Arthur to do anything. lf anything, she writes to Arthur fully expecting him to ignore it. She knows how much he cares, and she likely has nobody to turn to. All that said, Mary is a good, yet conflicted character just like Arthur. It is sad because Arthur’s saving grace would’ve been to just leave with Mary right then and there, but there was no escaping the life he lived. He even repeats the excuse Dutch gives about needing more money, when all he had to do was get on that trolley.

Still not as depressing as the first game. But thats the whole point of westerns. They're the modern day tragedy where the old world and everything it stands for inevitably before the unstoppable juggernaut that is progress. Either the main character goes out in ablaze of glory, or they become a withered forgotten relic of a world that no longer wants anything to do with them just like wild bill and his traveling wild west show.

There are high chances, rdr3 has to be a prequel because the first one is set too late, by 1911 the wild west era was basically already over. It would be nice to see how arthur and john joined the gang, at the beginning of rdr2 they are already part of it since a lot of time and I feel like I missed out a lot. We could see how the feud with the o'driscolls started and as side characters we'd have the mentioned gang members who died at the failed robbery such as jenny, mac and davey. Would be cool if the last mission would be just that robbery that went wrong in blackwater

My guess is Red Dead 3 takes place before this story, and you play as Dutch. If you think about it, the whole story between both games is really Dutch's story, through the eyes of the protagonists, but there was a time when Dutch himself was actually the protagonist.
@b1onicc
@b1onicc 3 жыл бұрын
@@DA_BOID I would disagree.Both the games are about Marston’s story. Rdr1 is no doubt focused on Johns story and Rdr2 is a setup to rdr1 (hence the last scenes in chapter 6). Dutch is indeed a very detailed character but he isn’t anything other then a secondary character whose evolution we observe along side with the evolution of the protagonist in both games.

I personally feel like Mary didn't do anything wrong: Arthur was loyal to the gang and chose it over her. If they were to be together, Mary would've had to join the gang to be with him. And as we know, the gang and its "philosophy" was built on a lie by Dutch and almost everyone who was in the gang died tragic and/or violent deaths, the exceptions being Charles, Sadie, Tilly and Mary-Beth. Women especially don't seem to have a good track-record for their association with the gang; Annabelle and Bessie are killed before the game starts (Jamie even says that it's a good thing Mary didn't join the gang after Arthur tells him about their deaths!), Eliza is also killed prior to the game, and Susan and Molly are also brutally killed in chapter six. Dutch has three women who he was in a relationship with that were brutally killed because of their association with the gang! By not joining the gang and leaving Arthur, Mary chose life! She chose to live life free of the violence and the life-long feuds that come with being in a violent outlaw gang! It's easy to look at the gang and see how close they are and how free they all live and admire them, but the reality is that they're all miserable people who're ruled by their traumatic pasts and they are actually menaces to society, who use their own bad situation as an excuse to cause harm and tragedy to other people. There is absolutely nothing about their way of life that is admirable and they should not be admired!
