I realised something when I beat this mission again recently. During the credits after everything has kicked off, Ross and some agents show up and find Micah and his gang dead. Micah's comments about "all kinds of folk making social calls" and that "they're teaming up" suggests that this is also his first meeting with Dutch in a long time, and soon enough Agent Ross shows up, who we know in RDR1 is actively looking for Dutch and the known members of his gang. If you ask me, Micah was only meeting with Dutch to turn him over to Ross, no doubt under some false promise of freedom or getting a share of that money. Once a rat, always a rat. This adds a whole new layer to this mission When Micah tries to win John over in the final showdown and gives him that "join us John!" crap, he's actually hoping he can turn John in too. I mean after everything that happened and knowing that John is out for his blood, why would he want him to ride with them again? He's just trying to lower his guard and buy some time until backup arrives. Then this could also further explain why Dutch kills Micah. When John asks Dutch why he's there, he replies "Same as you, I suppose." Micah would interpret this as he's there for the money, but really he's there to kill Micah. Dutch may well know he's trying to betray him again, so he kills him and leaves. He spares John and leaves him the money to fulfill Arthur's final wish. And that's the tragedy of John's revenge. He turned up guns blazing, totally unaware that higher powers were already using Micah for their gain, and that Dutch was already there to kill him anyway. They probably planned to use their current and long-serving tool Micah to hunt down the remaining members of the gang, but when they find him dead it turns their attention to John. He unknowingly introduced himself to them, and showed them that he'd be the perfect weapon for them when the time came, and he wouldn't need bribing or self-interest to cooperate , his family would make perfect leverage. The end result is of course the events of RDR1. He should've listened to Arthur. "Run and don't look back" "Stop trying to be two people at the same time."

When John asked Dutch what he’s doing here. Dutch responds with “Same reason as you, I suppose.” Meaning he came up there to kill Micah the whole time. Dutch knew he was wrong trusting and siding with Micah as well as him leaving John behind, but didn’t want to admit it. Dutch never wants to admit he’s wrong that’s the way he is, he wants to always be right which is why he tries so hard to be so reassuring to the gang saying he has a plan when he doesn’t. Dutch leaving the money in the chest is his way of making amends with John, but he doesn’t want to say sorry or that he was wrong cus thats not him.
