I will say, however, that's a much, much cleverer way to do "evil crew" than Star Trek's stupid Mirror Universe - you don't have to try to explain how this bunch of vile backstabbers could possibly have survived, or be in the exact same place as our heroes at the same time, as they were only just spontaneously generated!

I think the idea with Low Rimmer is not so much he's repressed his sexuality and that sexuality is a negative thing. My hope is they were going for that the worst part of Rimmer is that he gets off on inflicting suffering to others, that they are men was not relevant to him, they are just who was there.
@MRMIdAS2k11 ай бұрын
That was kinda my take on it too. His sexuality isn't the low bit, it's more his desire to do it to unwilling participants. He'd absolutely be the dude who ignores safe words and pushes after a no.

@@MRMIdAS2k The way he's dressed is clearly more androgynous, though. That's a choice, and it does have unfortunate implications in the context. He doesn't normally dress that way, but his "low" version does? There's something pointedly queer about this version of Rimmer, both in behavior and in design, and the fact that that's the worse version of him isn't great messaging. Maybe it could be framed as part of him that he's ashamed of, that he *thinks* is bad, rather than part of him that *is* bad, but I don't recall it being presented that way, especially contrasting with the other set of duplicates.
@MRMIdAS2k11 ай бұрын
@@Swenglish While I get where you're coming from, I don't think that's the case. That's not throwing the entire kink community under the bus, that's a bad person looking like a good person. Same shit happens in all aspects, a bad footballer dresses the same as a good one, a soldier convicted of war crimes wore the same uniform as the one honoured for heroism, etc. Also, None of the crew dress like their "High" versions either, so your point about "low" Rimmer holds no merit.

While i agree that it was very much "of it's time" and they wouldn't make those jokes if they made the episdoe today, i will say that when it came out, i didn't take it as them saying Rimmer being gay was the bad thing, it was more that he was going to do things to Lister without his concent and force Lister to do things with him. Also, you can look at it from the way that the episode was titled Angels and Demons, which is a biblical refrence and the bible has pretty strict ideas of what makes someone good or not, so while you can say that Rimmers portrayal of a "bad" person was wrong, you could also say that the "good" people being super religious isn't true either.

I always loved the episodes with different versions of the main characters. But yes there are some elements which have not aged well (they probably were problematic at the time to certain audiences who didn't have a voice then). We basically have kink shaming in this episode, & casual homophobia in others. The show has always been laddish but I feel for the most part never overly offensive in the way that some laddish shows can be. But there is an upcoming episode from season 10 that includes a particularly nasty slur which feels misjudged at best.

As regards prejudice in the episode: I came out as (mainly) gay at around 15 years old, probably when these episodes were first airing in the UK. I don't find the depiction of `evil' Rimmer offensive. If they were going to have a sexual target, there's only males on board Red Dwarf at this time And I don't think most ppl would confuse his character with gay people in general (or I hope not!). Ace Rimmer in Dimension Jump is clearly a heterosexual character. But when Bongo (Kryten's alter ego) suggests an encounter with him he isn't offended - just not interested. Of course, there are limits. The idea that a Pot Noodle, even in some ideal universe, would actually taste nice - well, that is repugnant.

Fwiw I don't find rimmers homophobic remarks about ace to be problematic for two reasons. First, you're not meant to like who rimmer is. Most of what he says is reprehensible or shitty, so his reacting that way is in character. Secondly, the depression angle mentioned that maybe he fears he is gay means that projection would also be in character. The sex = evil thing is definitely just the 80's shorthand for morality though.

When watching a show with someone else it’s like their responses are infectious, in the same way as someone yawning makes you yawn too. The thing with Rimmer is that he’s extremely repressed. Way back he said about his entire sex life had been 12 minutes, and that included the time it took to eat the pizza. Holoship was the closest thing he’d ever had to an actual relationship. Around the time of the show there were also various sex scandals in the news, including some Conservative politicians being involved in BDSM. So it was kind of a play on the conservative and repressed Rimmer who has punished himself in previous episodes, suddenly becoming the most extreme anti-Rimmer. No inhibitions and punishing others.

The thing I think to many people in this day and age dont understand is that in old comedy like RD or Frasier where jokes were made towards aspects of sexuality and the like... it wasnt that we were laughing with Rimmer calling Ace gay, we werent laughing at lower Rimmer being a 'nasty gay guy', we were laughing at Rimmer for being a complete bigoted gimboid, and the extreme ludicrousness of low Rimmers portrayal. When Frasier or Niles get all uneasy about a 'gay' situation we werent laughing 'hahaha gay is funny' we were laughing at how stupid, repressed and silly their reactions to such things were (especially given their supposed high socialite life styles which you'd think would make them more tolerant of that). You even see it way back in the 60-70's comedies where you'd often have a bigoted character in some way, and some clearly 'gay, not gay' character... often even though it was funny, the character who was bigoted was still in many ways put in his place if he went to far, and sure often the gay bash jokes got people to laugh (I know i did)... but we knew it was just a joke and we knew the message being conveyed, and we even got to laugh doubly when you had a family member or co worker who completely missed the point and actually agreed with bigoted character (although usually behind their back)... a character like Mr Humphries from 'Are You Being Served' , as camp and bent as a pink tent in a wind storm but the guy was funny as hell, we knew what he was and we didnt care, and when he was treated badly we'd laugh but we'd also be on his side... there was no malice or bigotry about it, but yeah some people did look at such characters and go 'haha stupid gay'... but those people will always be part of society, but thankfully in a small minority. I personally think this 'dont go there' mentality of modern times with certain subjects has neutered comedy and turned it into a bland boring safe thing. Comedy is a way of looking at things that need to be discussed wrapped up in the cushion of humor, if you censor what comedy can discuss... it breaks that entirly. Although this is from a non American perspective, as British humor is often self derogatory and weather its straight, gay or anything inbetween it can make fun of itself knowing only the truly bigoted bastards will get the total wrong end of the stick of it, and then we can all turn and laugh at those people together.
@UKJesterVids11 ай бұрын
I mostly agree, except that these days the bigots are running things, so normalising "ha, ha, gay is funny" doesn't work so well. Much like normalising "non-con sex is funny"... Times change. I would agree with your comments on Low Rimmer, and I'm a late period Gen-Xer. At the time this sort of thing was (considered) fine, but I can't help but feel certain things like that - which were very prevelent in 80s / 90s media - helped keep a lot of people in the closet. I think media literacy is important, but a lot of people in general still don't get the sheer influence and damage certain tropes can do if repeated enough times. That doesn't make me hate the show, or want anyone to be "cancelled"... but it is a thing worth calling out. One thing that I haven't seen anyone comment on is the curiously conservative attitude to horror films / media in general in this episode. They may make a bit of a joke about it ("Die Screaming With Lots Of Pointy Sharp Things In Your Head" is an amusingly daft fake title), but the fact that it's mentioned by one of the Lows as being an "evil" thing, plus the association with Kryten's statement about things that "are designed to sicken the soul and shrivel the spirit" or whatever it was he said, comes off as rather silly and way more censorious than they'd want. I suppose that can be explained by the 80s "video nasties" scare we had in the UK, which a lot of US film fans from the time will also have some knowledge of. Stuff like the Evil Dead films had only recently been unbanned for a couple of years at the time this episode was made (and even then with some large cuts), and it wouldn't really be until the late 90s and early 2000s when that sort of thing properly eased up. (The uncut version of Evil Dead wasn't approved for release until 2001.)

Low Holly, all two seconds of her, forever lives rent-free in the head of my inner adolescent. Fun fact: They actually really blew up the original model of Red Dwarf that they'd used for all those transition shots since S1 to get that explosion in this episode. Oops! As for the collective/observed viewing experience: well, we can watch the show over and over again (and many of us do) but we can never truly watch it again for the first time, without knowing what's coming, and there is something fun about watching someone else watch it for the first time, watching them not know what's coming and trying to guess, sometimes being wrong but other times being right. It does, sometimes, "freshen" the episodes somewhat.

Another great episode. Very cleverly written as usual. But... No spoilers but next it's the BIG one - probably the most shocking episode of all. 😮😮😮 Can't wait to see what the Gals make of it. Good job they're sitting down...

I wouldn't say watching you is a more intense version of watching it, but watching people watch things for the first time is next best thing to being able to watch things for the first time, so I get a bunch out of it, and you wearing your heart on your sleeves more than you would watching for yourself is probably part of that. (And I enjoy the often heavily tangential long intros) On... Rocky Horror Rimmer... I _think_ what they were going for was a Hellraiser (and specifically Cenobite) parody rather than having any actual intentions with it - S5 of Red Dwarf would have been 4 years after the first Hellraiser film, so the timeline fits pretty well for riffing on that franchise in popular culture. I agree with you that it doesn't actually work, mind, for pretty much the same reasons, and just because I don't think they meant anything by it doesn't mean it isn't perpetuating... What you said.

Why can't we just watch it rather than analysing the moral ambiguity?

Did you spot the TARDIS? A model of it was placed in this episode (an out take filmed in season 3). Some of the effects team (notably Peter Wragg and Mike Tucker) worked on both Red Dwarf and Doctor Who.

Interesting concept that you can be "too good". I was expecting the good versions of themselves to be perfect but it's like without the negative aspects of their personalities they couldn't function properly. They were so keen to see the good in everyone and everything that they were too trusting and too gullible.
@UKJesterVids11 ай бұрын
I think that's part of the point; without both sides it's not possible to function properly, and people need the mix of good and bad

Please don't use terms like "gay-coded". It enforces negative stereotypes. By saying Frasier and Niles were "gay-coded", it implies that straight men acting that way is somehow out of the norm. Like they're not "allowed" to enjoy the opera or wine or there's something "other" about straight men with Frasier and Niles' mannerisms. The reverse applies too; straight women aren't "gay-coded" if they enjoy sports, wear plaid or drink beer. Gay women aren't "straight-coded" if they dress more traditionally feminine or like to cook or want kids. "Coding" is just another way of stereotyping people.
@twofacetoo7511 ай бұрын
Yep. I've never understood why people are okay with 'coding' when it's literally JUST stereotyping people, but repackaged into a nicer word.

At least for me the experience is not as intense. This is mostly due to you not being able to show a lot of the actual show due to copyright, and partly due to me already being familiar with the material. Watching reactions is a way of vicariously reliving the first time experience but the emotions are never the same as the first time you see something. This is why a lot of viewers put weight on reactions being first-time reactions and why expressive, emotional reactors tend to do better. So you're doing it right!

I agree that the insecurities and comments towards Ace we a bit meh by todays standards and felt a bit schoolyardy but I feel Rimmer's Low character was played in a way that came across that if the High's would have been female versions of the crew Low Rimmer would have treated them in exactly the same way. And it wasn't BDSM. No control, not pleasure through pain, no safe words... dude was just a sadist that wanted to whip someone half to death and have his way which again clearly comes across in the way he's played.

I get what you mean about the performativity of emotion. Performativity in the proper sense: the actions you take to produce the watching form the emotions.
@cathydraws789510 ай бұрын
My main disappointment with the episode is that it has so much potential for character exploration, especially if they went the route of what they think is their best and worst traits. So instead of all of them being spiritual/gross maybe high kryten could have been human and low kryten be a complete servant/more robotic. high rimmer, super smart, confident (basically ace) low rimmer, either actually explore the internalised homophobia side instead of making a joke, or just super cowardly and meek. Cant be bothered to think about lister or cat but you get the idea
@Chorleypie10 ай бұрын
When I first watched this many years ago I thought the punchline was going to be that the evil Rimmer turned out to be identical to the everyday Rimmer.
@andyc825711 ай бұрын
I don't think the intention of Bad Rimmer was to suggest being gay was bad. I think they were going for "sadist" and the Rocky Horror look was a cheap shorthand for it at the time although it doesn't come across well when viewed with a modern perspective. Overall it's not the best episode, the idea is probably better than the execution. The next one though, well that may very well be the absolute pinnacle of the crimson short one.

I knew this was going to be an episode that would draw a number of (honestly, relatively predictable) opinions out of you. And in fairness, you're not wholly wrong: a number of the jokes and stereotypes used can be harmful, and have definitely dated poorly. However, I'm somewhat surprised that you didn't seem to pick up on the more transgressive and problematic undertones (particularly with Low!Rimmer, but it shows up with all of the Lows): the point wasn't the sexual preferences (implied or otherwise), but the lack of respect for other's consent and bodily autonomy. (on a lighter sidenote- I don't know if the subtitles on the video you're reacting to are autogenerated or not, but they're not always accurate. In this particular episode, for example, Cat doesn't actually reference Aruba. It's the "awoogah waltz", as in the sound of an alarm klaxon.)
