Yeah, and the two episodes she solely directed "Holoship" and "Terraform" both turned out as two of Red Dwarf's great episodes.

Indeed. She does seem to have taken it in her stride. Though to be fair who wouldn't want on their CV "directed 2 of Red Dwarf's finest episodes, in a very popular season/series of that show.."?

@tilasole3252 yes I feel sorry for her. But they might have been good episodes even without her direction. Either way, she seemed like a fish out of water, and I wonder if the existing team were a bit too 'cliquey', leaving her with little chance as an outsider joining the party late. And little things like not knowing what p.o.v means won't have helped her gain much respect as a director.

Series 5 was the peak of Red dwarf. Some would argue series 6, some would say the original concept of 1 and 2 were the ultimate, some would argue that 3 and 4 were the best. I love all of them. Repeated viewings with friends of series 1 through 6 on VHS and I watched all with my brother when aired, lost interest after series 7.....

That was when the BBC cared about the show. With the three year hiatus between producing Series 6 and 7, the BBC management changed, and the BBC got bored with the show.
@JohnBloggs-m8l
@JohnBloggs-m8l 11 ай бұрын
@@johnking5174 hahaha, the BBC NEVER cared about the show, they rejected it repeatedly when Rob and Doug shopped it there in the early 80s and only greenlit it because they'd gone and given a financial allocation to a series two of a 1985 comedy drama penned by Ben Elton called Happy Families starring French and Saunders and Adrian Edmondson which Ben never intended to do a second series of but was apparently routine for the BBC to do for shows at the time. It was because this didn't go to a second series they then tossed Rob and Doug those funds to go and film series one of Red Dwarf because they'd already allocated the budget, if they hadn't they would never have commissioned Red Dwarf and even then they relegated it to BBC Manchester. So that shows the care they had for the show from the outset. Everyone cares when the ratings come in yeah but they never inherently cared about the show and once the ratings died they quickly passed it off to Dave.

Season 5 was peak of the peaks! Everyone involved seems so talented and perfect for their role, the right people at the right time. And the writing - to take such complex ideas with such scope and boil them into a 30 minute mini-film with a full arc, perfect dialogue, perfect character writing and all in a way the layman can understand and enjoy...

Series 5 is my favourite series, and I'll give some of the credit to Juliet May when she didn't have to worry about the effects. Though her inexperience with said effects and her not knowing what POV meant despite being the director were marks against her sadly. (Though TBF, the former made me wonder why they brought her on in the first place, or not hire a visual effects supervisor as Doug admitted they should have)

Feel a bit bad for the director, although not knowing what POV means (which every teenage boy knows nowadays lol) and probably a loyalty to Ed Bye didn't help her. Still loved series 5 though some of my favourite episodes.

Yes, especially since she did such a great job and for many, her episodes are some of the best. Reminds me of Diana Mulder as Dr Kathrine Pulaski in Star Trek The Next Generation. She was cast to replace Dr Beverly Crusher and the cast who had worked with Gates McFadden from the very beginning were giving the new girl the cold shoulder. She did a wonderful job and wish she would return at least as a guest star in the future. She did mention that the TV series was difficult though and she was not used to the rigors of acting in that context, but also the clique was against her. And fans complained she was too critical of Data, but that was the writers, not her. But she also had some of the best character development of the entire show and she was only there for a single season. 😅

@@DodderingOldMan yeah I know, time speeds up as you get older for sure, when I was a kid a year was an eternity, now a year is gone in a flash, sometimes I wonder if it's just perception or is time actually speeding up as well, or maybe there is no time and its only our perception and we are all living in a simulation...the more I think about it the more likely it seems to be honest 😱

In my opinion the difference is that the earlier series were much more believable. I mean sure plenty of strange things would happen but the characters reacted like ordinary people might when put in the same situation, and that's what made it so good to watch. In the later series it became a lot less believable. Just little things like spilling a meal on the console and having sparks come out everywhere but nothing is broken - too unrealistic. It's like the earlier series were trying to tell a serious story but in the process there were a lot of laughs, but the later series they were going for jokes and didn't care about crafting a believable storyline, and it just became a bit silly. And yes, as the actors age the characters need to change as well, and they have - but in the opposite direction. They've become more one-dimensional as they get older instead of mellowing with age.

It's a bit poor show the way Doug talks about Juliet's direction. It always sounds unprofessional to criticise colleagues, but Doug was the man in charge and he knew how complex and ambitious the episodes were, because he wrote them! He completely mismanaged the recruitment process and didn't provide the right support and supervision. He really ought to have taken some ownership rather than blame shifting. Fair play to Juliet for appearing in this and acknowledging her mistakes and learning curves. Despite her failings the series turned out great, and it noticeably raised the bar in my opinion.

Series 5 had a lot of issues. No Ed Bye directing. Juliet May coming in, and literally had no sci-fi experience or interest. She was also lacking in her basic directing skills. It was a tough series to make. The show was BBC 2 highest rated shows, pulling in millions of viewers. Their episodes sold a lot by BBC Video and it was now airing internationally to millions. So yes, ego would start to increase, but also annoyance at the lack of support the production was given.

Yeah I must admit I've never really bought the line that they ran out of ideas for Holly. Especially as they brought the male Holly back and suddenly he was in pretty much every scene in Series 8. This is just pure speculation, but I just get the feeling they didn't gel with Hattie. You notice when the doc talks about Hattie leaving, there isn't any contribution from anyone else saying what a shame it was or a mistake that she was going. They spent a lot more time talking about Norman leaving in the Series 2 Doc. I think it was unfair considering when Hattie was given something to do, like in 'White Hole', she was great!
