Chris Barrie was filming another comedy show at the same time as Red Dwarf called The Brittas Empire. Filming both at the same time stressed him out, and he didn't enjoy filming season 6. He wanted a break from Red Dwarf to focus on Brittas because it was easier to make, so, Doug Naylor came up with this idea so he could leave. While filming season 7, he actually rekindled his love for the show.

The first two episodes of Season 7 are the strongest. The problem is that with Rimmer gone, the dynamic changes a bit and doesn't really vibe quite as well. It's not the most godawful, horrendous thing out there, it's just not as good. There's still certainly a lot to enjoy, but the first two episodes are the highpoint of the season, IMHO.

@wwemusicfanC yeah, I didn't really want to go into specifics in case they read these, but since you're mentioning it, I'll concede that. The continuity, which was never great to begin with, is completely abandoned after the first 8 series, and each one is just kind of it's own self-contained thread. That is jarring as you transition between series and I don't love it... but if you get past that the show is never really bad.

Red Dwarf occupies such a strange territory. Absolutely it's a sitcom...and obviously it's having fun with sci-fi. But the normal approach to writing such a series would be to lampoon and satirize sci-fi...to reduce sci-fi to a simple caricature...but instead, they take the harder route, and insert comedy into some very intriguing sci fi stories that would work as serious Star trek etc episodes. It's easy to forget what a hard assignment this actually is for the writers and actors...

Season 6 was the peak in terms of critical recognition, for sure. Gunmen is an actual award-winning story. @Shagger9 ай бұрын
The first thing I want to say to Kat and Paula is thanks for these videos. I'm new to the channel and the last day or two I've been bingeing these Red Dwarf reactions and I think you two are great. As to why series 7 and 8 are so hated, I have no earthly idea. I've been watching the show since it actually aired on television and I think these two season are really strong. There is only a couple of things that I have seen consistently in the complaints over the years: 1. No live audience. As the show went on, they started shooting more and more of the show on location and with green screen because of how the stories were being written. By the time series 6 came out, they were at the point that most of an episode was shot without the live audience. For series 7, the ditched the live audience completely. The audience was back for series 8, so this only lasted one series, but for the sitcom purists this was enough to turn their nose up at the show. Now I understand why people disapproved of this, but the producers had thier reasons and I think they make enough sense to justify this decision. The episodes were screened for an audience to produce the laugh track, so it's no like the just pasted laughter into the show from some generic library, it was still a genuine audience reaction. A fair compromise, if you aske me. 2. The production was too good. Now this one is really stupid, but some people actually liked it more when the show looked it like it was shot on the budget of a miner's breakfast. Whilst it was, that's not point. Once the late Mel Bibby became the set designer for the show from series 3, the show just evolved and got to look better without really having more money to spend. Why this suddenly became such an issue for some people in series 7 I think goes back to the lack of a live audience. Yes, I can see why people didn't like that, but it did give the show a chance to have a more cinematic look without the restrictions that a live audience impose of how a show is shot,. The show didn't have THAT much more money, it just had a chance to look better because they were free of the practical limitations they had to work with in the past. I'm not going to deny that there is charm to cheap look, especially for a comedy, but the sets on shows like Friends were allowed to look good without people saying it's not a proper sitcom. 3. CGI in place of model shots. Now this one I must admit I do at least partly agree with. Especially on the kind of budget for a late 90's BBC show, CGI would never look as good as what the show had done in the past with models. Models and the processes used to shoot them are very expensive, so I get why they did this, but I did miss the models from earlier seasons. The CGI wasn't all bad though, like in this episode with the planet rings made out of Ace Rimmer coffins, that was great shot. A shot that likely wouldn't have been possible without CGI. So I was happy enough to just go with it, I wasn't that picky.

The first 2 episodes of series 7 are fantastic. It takes a turn for the rest of the series which is different. Some people find it easier to say something sucks just because it’s different to what they’re used to and are not used to it so they become cynical about it. A similar thing happens in series 8 where a certain dynamic change happens and certain people say they don’t like the direction. I’m not one of them though. Series 7 was never that bad, people just knee-jerked hysterically because it had been 4 years and it was different. I also think there is a subset of red dwarf fans who only wanted the show to be silly blokey comedy hijinks and resented it leaning more into the sci-fi and dramatic elements.
@PassiveSmoking9 ай бұрын
Ace Rimmer sky surfing on a crocodile: Your argument is irrelevant. We get some amazing Ace Rimmer lore and a great character sendoff this episode. If I remember (and it was over 25 years ago) Chris Barrie temporarily left the roll to be in The Britta's Empire. He does return though. There are two famous brian Cox's. The one in this was the world-class Scottish actor. THe other, who you're probably thinking of is Proffessor Brian Cox, the physicist and TV presenter (although when this was filmed he wouldn't not been a professor but the keyboardist in the pop band D'ream). :) I think the writing isn't as good from here on as one of the duo who wrote it left. It's been Grant Nailor, ever since.

Between Gordon Brittas (The Brittas Empire) and Arnold Rimmer (Red Dwarf), Chris Barrie was simultaneously the two biggest gimboids on British Television. Something had to give, and as it turns out it was Rimmer. Not the first, or last, time a sitcom has had to make a major mid-season casting change. Some shows roll with the punches better than others. Red Dwarf, of course, has never been shy about major makeovers, though, and whatever other criticisms I might have about this era of the show, how it rolls with this particular punch in the episodes to come was as interesting to me as everything else Red Dwarf has tried to do. Will be fun, as ever, to see how your eyes see it.
@unportanter9 ай бұрын
I think one of the reasons S7 is so contentious is that it came out before ... Arrested Development, the Office, etc. The proliferation of the single-cam comedy. To kids like me who'd grown up watching every episode of the show 20 times before S7, it was a jarring and alien transition. To people watching the show linearly and completely fresh, the transition isn't that severe, cause they've probably spent more time watching single-cams than multi-cam sitcoms. (I'll still whine about the season though. The music and pretentiousness ARE objectively off-kilter.)

@@JackRascal Was there any TV series anywhere that did great CGI in the 90's? Babylon 5 is credited as having the best CGI of that era and it still looked like shit. Only movies were able to afford anything resembling decent.

I disagree with anyone who says you should stop watching at any point, Red Dwarf has ups and downs but it's always good. However, this series is the one I'm least likely to rewatch out of the original run when I come back to the show (with the exception of this episode).

You might remember Brian Cox better as the the main Russian character in the films Red and Red2 opposite Bruce Willis, or alternatively he played the role of a master spy for Wellington in the television series centered on the exploits of Sharpe in the Nepolionic War fought in the Spanish Peninsula . There are so many roles that he has been credited with, particularly in movies but he has appeared on numerous television programmes and he has also appeared on stage in many plays including the classics of Shakespeare. I believe that his depiction of King Lear drew many excellent reviews and theatrical awards.

Had a feeling this might be a weepy episode - very poignant, very bittersweet, heart-warming and heart-rending, plus fantastic jokes along the way
