I was in the Seabees from 75 to 79 and because of those deployments I worked on some of the projects in the handbook that Chief J.J. Johnson gave me when I was assigned as the Structural Planner for the 819th Red Horse in 82 until 86. I salute all of you who served!

Had the privilege of serving with the 554th RED HORSE in Utapoa Thailand and Clark Air base in the Phillipines in 1973-74. Greatest experience of my life. Learned so much and made lifelong friends. To the Horse

I served in the 819th and 820th units. They saved my career and together we accomplished so much over my career. The greatest group of men and women who ever walked the earth were who I met during my enlistment. It was hard work during hard times and we met the challenge. To "The Horse" VD Walker

Holy crap! I did 7 years as an SP ('89-'96) and I had no idea Red Horse did ALL of that stuff! I knew they were engineers and they seemed to have something unique about them, but their mission profile is impressive! Much respect Red Horse!

I'm SSgt Kevin Monroe. I served in the 554th Det 1, Kunsan AB, 1982-1983 Structures shop--then went to 819th Red Horse at RAF Wethersfield, England from 1983-1986. Got out after then leaving Sembach Air Base, Germany in 1992. Now I work for the State of Washington doing pretty much the same thing. Going all over the state building shit.

Its interesting seeing ppl ask how to get into the horse. When I enlisted I had never heard of it; most ppl havent. I learned though, and I have to say, The Horse isnt for everybody. It can be a tough life, and you'll be worked into the ground . In the Horse, it doesn't rain, snow, get too hot, get too cold, or get dark. One can be assigned to a RHS, but you have to EARN the title of Horseman. You've earned your hat when you can barely stand, but keep going no matter what, without complaint

I was assigned to the 819th RHS from a FMS squadron and except for a very few times, I usually worked doing other duties not related to my AFSC. I enjoyed the time that I was in the Horse. It is hard work and you learn to work as a team in order to finish each project that is assigned.

554th Redhorse Osan, Korea 1989-1991. I must say this did the most impact on my young 20yr old brain and to this day I think about my time with my brothers and sisters of the 554th combat engineering devision. I turned 21 while serving the 554th and had more than one green bean experience when most kids of this age where still sucking their mom's titties, lol The only thing I regret was being injuried during a readyness exercise when the first gulf war started which destroied my chances to remain active duty but with the great leadership we had I was able to finish my long tour and discharge in SF with an honerable.

@IndiaEight5 When i was in, the AF had two types of CE units. Prime Beef (base maintenance ), and RED HORSE ( Heavy construction). As a CE troop you can be assigned to either type of unit, but it's much harder to get into the Horse. There's fewer Horse squadrons then there are Beef, and it's considered a special duty assignment with a controlled tour. They used to not take 3 level's at all. (what you are after tech) That changed for awhile, i dunno if they changed it back or not.
