Okay so it’s 5am and I’ve been up playing games and I start hearing this beautiful chirping coming from outside my window. I open it and looked at the little guy and googled his description and it was one of these , so I start copying his whistle back to him. I stopped after a bit and he proceeded to go into an insane soliloquy, switching his song up and doing all kinds of crazy calls it was incredible. He wasn’t doing it until I started whistling with him so I wonder what kind of interaction it was , was he mad? Did he think I was a mate? It was really impressive either way

Southern California. We have house finches all over our neighborhood. Their song sounds very conversational to me, melodic rambling with a bit of a stammer. My favorite part of their talk is a drawn "Tweee-tweeew" at the end of a long, rapid sentence. They almost twirl the "tweeew" at the end. It is so distinct and they don't say it often. I wonder if it's a regional thing. It's satisfying on the ear. Sometimes I listen to their song just to catch those notes.

Just watched one in front of my neighbor’s house, literally less than five meters away. It knew I was watching, as I stood up as it began, and just continued singing its heart out. Though common, I admit that songbirds still give me pause.

These lovely little birds are abundant throughout Vancouver where I live and very few people here seem to know they exist. They begin to sing more frequently in early January, already announcing spring, like a triumphant anthem against the dark of winter and a vision of the coming light of spring.

I just rescued a fledgling last week. He couldn't see because he had really bad discharge from both of his eyes. Looked all over the internet and finally found out that he has basically pink eye, which I guess is really common. Got him some antibiotics after the fourth day because he was going down hill fast. Now after two days on the meds he woke me up for the first time signing. He already has his flight feathers and his adult plumage is coming in nicely. I figure by the end of next week he should be able to go back to the wild. But I'll leave the cage open so he can come and go as he pleases, and provide extra food on the patio to give him a head start. I'm gonna miss Hawk-eye when he goes.

Last year one lone red finch showed up about a month before any other birds. He was singing so urgently i think for a mate that I whistled back some of the song. I was standing outside my door where there was a large light lamp mounted on the house. He flew into it inches from me. He couldn't get out and my son came over after about an hour of the finch trying to free himself. He got the finch free, i call him after my son, Mr ....Finch. He stayed on my lamps,for weeks and one day I saw him on the fence with his lady and they were carrying grasses away to build a nest. I loved his song and tenacity. This year again ahead of all other birds I hear his singing. Hope it is him! I whistled back once and he perched on my fence. I told him no more singing with him !

I heard some of these birds while I was walking to work through downtown every morning. They had a colony on the back side of the parking garage, near a small bit of wild brush land along the railroad track. Most birds speak a simple tweet or a repeated phrase to keep in contact with their mates, sort of like "Marco - Polo," all day long. There is something awesome about the way these little ones sound like they are saying an excited sentence in bird speak. They talk so energetically and happily, never daunted by the weather. Their sound is more magical than anything you can buy in the stores, and it would set me up for my work day with a smile. I would stop and listen to them, with the bright morning sun glinting on the dewy bushes. In March I saw them flying up to the trellises with bits of twig and grass to build nests. That was awesome.

I've had a pair return to my front porch to have babies every year four the 4th year now. They're here now with 4 babies who will most likely fly off tomorrow. They've already begun a second nest opposite the 1st on the porch. They did the same thing last year! I'm so happy cause I wasn't ready for them to leave. They're my favorites. So cheerful and passive.

@@Larkitect_ I leave the porch light off, too! As an update, this same pair of House Finches from my original comment are now raising their THIRD batch of babies this season, all on my front porch. I saw their tiny little heads pop up from the nest for the first time yesterday. They are so precious. And I do the exact same thing regarding the porch light. I don't think it's been on one time since March. This is the 4th batch of babies to be raised on my porch this season! A couple just decided to build a nest right over my front door. Albeit wild, they've slowly grown used to me. The father even fed the chick's in front of me just now. They don't exactly get up close to me but definitely closer than the average wild bird. As long as I'm sitting they seem more comfortable with me. Being that this was the first time I ever played this video out loud outside, not shortly after was when the male fed the chick's. So I think it helped me bond further with my new feral friends.

A " society finch"... that's a perfect term. I live in the hills near Lake Elsinore. I feed and supply fresh water every day for them. (which means I feed the squirrels, rabbits, doves, and even a very friendly gopher). But it's always been a sweet little female finch that comes and sits with me every single day. I always called her the "shot caller". I know her voice from all the others. Any time there's a finch argument... she steps in and settles it. I live on 4 acres loaded with willow trees. I hear them but often never see them. Except for my little female friend. She shows up every day.

I remember these in Pennsylvania where I grew up. That's when I decided they were my favorite songbird. Now I live in Arizona and have learned they were originally from the Southwest, but now are practically all over the country. The songs out here are the same as the songs I remember in PA.

I live in PA and hear a major difference between this recording and the house finches at my feeders.
@Snerticus7 жыл бұрын
I remember that the Purple Finches had a similar yet different song. But I can't remember the Purple Finch song, as it's been over a decade and I only hear the House Finch song out here - there are no Purples. The House Finches always brings back memories when I hear them so they must be similar enough. All of the House Finch videos I watch here have the same type of song no matter the location, so I'm not sure how much of a difference you're talking about. I guess it depends how fine-tuned your ear is. All I care about is how beautifully it sings, and the memories it brings with it.
@GHOSTbirdnatureLOVER7 жыл бұрын
***** Yes, I am a birdwatcher, so I notice the smallest differences in bird songs. This one compared to my house finches is vastly different, and it seems that every finch video on KZbin shows a different song. They vary regionally, and I suspect greatly, as I have not found any recording online that sounds like the ones I hear. I’ve noticed differences in house finch songs even 3 hours away in New Jersey. It sounds like you lived farther north than I do, as purple finches are scarce here and declining. Houses were indeed only western birds, but were introduced on Long Island in the 1940s. They were still in a small area in the northeast in the eighties, and then exploded across the continent. I suspect that they couldn’t make it over the Great Plains without human settlement there, and introduction in the east aided them. I agree, certain bird songs sound like home. I just wish there was a recording of a PA house finch! I could make my own, but it isn’t their singing season.
@Snerticus7 жыл бұрын
I am a birdwatcher too, but I don't notice any major differences in the House Finch videos other than minutia, which I just chalk up to individual or geographical differences. Some people, like you I assume, are more attuned to differences in song, and probably have a more discerning musical ear as well. I am not into music that much, so that's probably why I don't notice the differences. But I can tell the differences of other bird songs, one example being the White Crowned Sparrow. The songs they sing out here in fall and spring are vastly different from the songs I hear on birding websites. Even the Starlings out here "sing" differently than the ones back east... of course, their calls are the same. But birds like the Red Winged Blackbird, Cardinal and House Finch sound the same to me here as they did back in PA. Regardless, the House Finch is still my favorite native songbirds. Whenever I hear their song, even if I'm feeling down, I have to smile. They just sound so happy.
