Just to clear things up re previous comments. The melody [ tune[ is Loch Lomond , which of course is in Bonnie Scotland. So its a Scottish traditional melody. Many Scottish / Irish melodies bear a close resemblance and I think this is due to the close proximinties of both countries. This is very true of a lot of Robert Burns works/ songs as Ayrshire, were he was born is very close to Ireland. In days of the past, travelling folk singers would visit , take away songs/ melodies and rearrange them to suit their own taste/moods. Can I suggest that is what has happened with " Red is the Rose". However, " My love is ike a Red . Red, Rose" written by Robert Burns , is in no way to be confused with ths song. Hope this helps !

My mum was born and lived in Ireland until she was 10 or 11 years old , she died an old woman, far away from her beloved Ireland but her Irish spirit lives on in her child and grandchildten. 5

I could hear the melody of Loch Lomond and figured that is where they got it from.

Aye the Boyne is in the North & Loch Lomond is in Scotland, but its still a fine tune & bonny song!

Sorry what I was referring to was, the Scotts lyrics to the same melody, I happen to prefer this version over, "You, take the high road, and I'll take the low road. . ." Now as for my geography I really do beg forgiveness, all of the British, Scottish, Welsh, & Irish History I have picked up was in spite of the 'American Education System' (and teachers wonder why they are under-paid!)
