Cool video! The jeweled cichlids I've had were much more red. Yours look almost pink. Very beautiful fish! Congrats on the success breeding them.

Hy there my jewels have also been doing this but not 100 eggs at a time upwards of 350+. I personly bought a second smaller tank and a sponge filter and heater and put around 100 in and around 80 r still around 3 weeks latter growing strong. I suggest with your next batch u put them in another tank. And for me as soon as I see eggs I suck them into a bucket then into a tumble for their first week. My tank has 8 loches and they love eating the baby’s. Atm I have around 300 eggs ina tumbler and I agree with leaveing a few with the parents they become very distressed if u don’t. I know the baby’s will die but it keeps my fish going. Somehow they have bread every 2 weeks this far and hope they continue. Btw feeding them 3-6 times a day realy helps growth and them not fighting other fish. Gl and nice video

I can relate somewhat. I just bred some rainbow cichlids and was able to get 16 past the fry stage although I removed everything from my tank except a panda garra and the parents. My Denison's Barbs were picking off my fry and so they were moved. My issue was feeding. I fed them mostly bloodworms and as soon as my fry were big enough to eat that, they grew really quickly. But it became really expensive . But the more you feed, the more fry you'll get to the juvenile stage. Another problem with lots of feeding is that you'll need a lot of water changes.

Hi I'm new to fish but I have 8 baby ones in a 5 gallon will they be OK in that even when they get bigger?

Hmm. Did recently get a pair to form and breed from the jewels I bought. They laid eggs but nothing past that. They guarded the nest but in 2 days all the eggs were gone and no fry. Not sure what happened but will let then try again after more research

Update. Female laid eggs again. Laid her eggs on a broken pot instead of in a gravel pit. Small batch of eggs probably less than 50. Fry are now free swimming with about 20 left.

Thanks for the insight. I recently had my first set of eggs. In a 40 gallon tank. I had 20 adults in the tank and they were picking off the eggs so I quickly bought another 30 gallon tank and moved my adults to it. I have about 150 baby fish about 2 months old. When I moved the adults I took out the filter for about a month. I have a big bubble stone and a few small plants but made a decent size pile of the jewel jagged rocks. It created 100s of little crevices that I noticed they like to sleep and hide in. It’s been 2 months now and I just recently moved a pleco into the tank about 3” big as well as a small top filter for a 10 gallon tank. So far they are doing great.

I was sure my red jewel was not what I was told (newbie to fishy keeping) coz he was purple or blue all the time, he is in a tank with two albino red Oscars who have recently started being lovey, and suddenly jewel is vividly red half the time is this normal, does he want a mate coz the other two are lovey

Hi! I got inspired from your video and kept a breeding pair of jewel cichlids in a 22 gallon tank! They spawned and had around 150-200 fry, after 5 days of having fry i noticed all of them were gone expect 10-15! I don't understand why did the fish eat thier fry, does that normally happen? And now the female has been chasing the male constantly.

Just so you know Jewel chichlids use to lose colors when they breed i have 5 Jewel chichlids and 4 is breeding and the allways start too lose there red color and the blue. So your jewel chichlids maybe has some blue color and maybe they just lost it during there breading

I have 2 batches of fries. First batch I got about 40 left out of 200+ in 2 month s. Second batch is only 2 weeks old. I vacuumed most of them to the same breeder box as yours, none of them seemed to get out of it. I left about 10 with the parents. They actually survived in a 30 gallon tank and grew faster than the ones I took out. Quite surprising. The parents must have done a great job protecting them. I have over 10 pieces of 3-4" cichlid in the same tank.

Cool - a good tank divider works too - once you see the eggs and you can cut off other fish in the tank.

hey, just like you i bought 2 jewels from my lfs. didnt know when they were small they were male and female. 6 months later inn my 55g community tank that is now way under stocked, after months of nesting and not producing any eggs at all, i woke up to a an impressive large rock with roughly 300-400 eggs. they are fending off some convict cichlids as well as other various fish. maybe 11 fish total all under 4 inches. was not the plan to breed any more cichlids but I am impressed by the size and numbers of this batch. thanks for the vid on community tank breeding. helped alot. cheers.

my red jewels murdered and half ate the others. like you, I got two of them.. i had no idea were a male and a female.. and they took over the tank. I have a 37 gallons tank. only the Male lives and like 50 fry. wondering when will they get red.. some of them look to pale..

Hi there. So I have a community tank. Had 2 blue jewels about avg size since the beginning of my tank. I added a third one in hopes for them to begin forming bonds as they were on their own. To my surprise the new one was a male and was more red. He seemed sick, lying on his own etc. I treated and shortly there after he was like a dog in a park. I saw the females started fighting by holding each others mouths. Shortly there after the male and one female got there first batch! Went well but they lost it as they were caught in a net with fry in from my convicts that also got babies. So they lost their own fry. Shortly after they tried again. I caught them and the babies and put them in their own tank with same water. Soon the babies got lost within the gravel as it was fairly big. Don't know if they got eaten as well. But they did not breed further in that tank. I put them back in the original tank and they were as if they were divorced. On their own and haven't breeded again since. Any possible reason for that? Or tips on how to get them breeding again?

That;s the reason they recommend not breeding fish in a community tank. Just because the adults will does not mean they should. Fry mortality is very high as you noted.
