I have the FG 180 50th anniversary and It blows me away everytime I play it. I absolutely love it. Sounds great, feels amazing, and is just honestly what I feel like an acoustic should be at its core. Best of all I can’t believe how good of a guitar you get for the price. Truly incredible. Haven’t picked up my Taylor 514 since I brought the 180 home

Fg-180 sounds better in my opinion, I just bought a 1969 FG-180 $300 US , that is having a neck reset new bridge nut and saddle, can’t wait to get it back. I have an FG300 I bought in Japan in 1973 and Fg5 and FS5, I love my Yamahas!!! Love your videos!

Re-Posted! This was the shootout I wanted to see/hear. And it just confirms what I heard before. To my ears, to my mind, I can see the 5 as an artist who is cerebral, very intense. Knows he is good and flaunts it. The 180-5 is the guy who is relaxed. Feels what he is doing and plays from the heart, smooth and calm and easy. Thank heavens you had this opportunity to play these great guitars side by side. Great job!

Couldn't decide which sounded better. I guess it depends on which song you're playing and what you expect the guitar to sound like. Then there is the difference in physical appearance. I like them both, so thanks to your reviews, I have one of each. Thanks Jarvis.

People tend to comment favourably on the one they own or intend to buy. Listen for yourselves. To me, they both sound incredibly similar but one a little drier than the other. I've made my choice. Took me a while to find one but I'm picking it up tomorrow.

I took a Bluetooth speaker ...placed it in sound hole & used sound frequencies and backing tracks to age my guitar. 1 hour a night in it's hard case. Turned a cheap fg700 into a much more aged guitar sound. Try it out. .... Costs a 5$ Bluetooth speaker

I have a 69 fg180. Beautiful sound. Problem is the old ones commonly have issues with the action. My neck had a slight bow and the top has become a little warped. My action was at 7.8 and I was just able to get it down to a .5 with some work on the saddle by a local luthier. It has a monster sound. Without a neck reset though the action is a bit high for me. I've narrowed my next guitar to the 50th reissue or a fg5 or fgx5. I still can't decide even after this very well put together video.

Great review the 180 50th is really cool but the fg3 - fg5 are a cut above more balanced and ooze quality, the only thing that let's the fg3 down is the plastic pickguard. I love my yammies so would take either. Thought the 180th 50 was a japan model that's what the nippon gakki states

Great review and amazing guitars. I like the FG5, beautifully rounded by including more mids, I think it's a bit more American, not really that signature Yamaha cannon. The new 180 convincingly has same kinda bite as my '67 FG180 Red label, if a little more domesticated. There's more space between the bass and the highs, I find that bigger dynamic fun, and it helps a tenor voice and in a mix.

Hi, Can I seek your advice please? I just bought a Yamaha FG200 circa1973 (47 years old). The action at 12fret was over 5mm, I reduced it to 2.9mm. However truss rod is barely working. There is slight bow in the neck near the soundhole. Otherwise I am quite happy. I want to ask - As this guitar is old and neck is slightly bent, is it a good idea to loosen strings daily after playing to lessen the tension on the neck? Thank you for your advice. :)
@TheGuitarSpaSingapore4 жыл бұрын
I’m very sure you can still turn the truss rod .. reason it just needs more force ive experience it many times on old guitars .. if you can’t straigten the neck then no amount of lowering the action will be that helpful as the curved bow will make Playability an issue

Should have bought it. Those vintage 180's aren't cheap these days. People have realized what beauties these things have become with a little age to them. Easily comparable to your average Martin's or Taylor's in terms of sound AND quality. These guitars are built to stand the test of time and only get better with some age. I've heard some vintage Yamaha's that I'd pay thousands for.

I am more a strummer than a picker. It took a while but I like Dunlop .73mm flexible yet firm enough. Currently I play a Martin D16E but I have 2x FGX5 on order for summer delivery. Purchased strictly off reviews like we see here (2x even.) I trust I will be pleased. I don't advise others to buy un test played though. My Martin. It was love after 30 seconds of playing (I came in from an FG830 so almost anything was better.) No action work needed, played it for a year now just as it was setup on the wall (4x restring in a year. I don't gig.) I think I am getting 200 hrs per string set. They do sound pretty bad by then though. "Shrill" is the sound made when a restring is needed.
