Biggest difference for me between these cameras is ... 1: How they represent Blues and Skin tone. RED does not do blue well, it always looks a bit purple, and skin always has green in it. Arri does push the blue a little more towards teal, and there are some yellow values that Arri pushed slightly more towards orange. You can grade your RED footage, and push your blues towards teal and greeny yellow colours towards orange and get close to the Arri look, but there are some colours that are just lost. 2: how well they handle colour in the shadows and highlights. As soon as an area is too dark or too light Red no longer sees much colour, Arri can distinguish between hues in dark and bright areas. 3: Not shown in this test, but fire. Red cannot record an open flame withour making it look like a flourescent yellow sulphur. Side by side Arri always wins when recording fire. 0:35 - Red has hints of Green in skin 2:51 - Red only sees one shade of blue here, Arri sees different hues of blue. 4:13 - bright building loses colour in Red footage, where Arri is able to retain rich colour into the highlights 5:40 - third woman from left, green top. Red cannot capture much colour here at all as it's a bit too dark for the sensor, Arri captures all that colour in the shadows just fine. You can instantly tell Red from Arri by the depth of colour information in shadows and highlights. Whenever shadows and highlights look like they have been desaturated, thats RED. I own both. Arri for the colour, Red for the size and frame rates. People forget these Red advantages for what they are and they do matter. Another valid test (which I have never seen anyone do) is to put both cameras on a scale side by side, RED wins everytime - for some productions weight and size matters.

If you compare 5:27 vs 5:40 you'll find that RED has actually captured the green well. The issue seems to be introduced while matching to ARRI.

The only reason why ARRI seems more saturated is cause it has a lot of teal tint on mid tones and shadows, RED has more natural looking colours, you can see it on the color chart comparison.

Red also wins at higher iso... But it's a higher iso that destroys the contrast depth, so even though more shades are visible with Red it ends up looking worse in dark scenes. Another odd result in the images is how much more ruddy tones and skin detail appear in Ari shots. A lot of that is lost with Red (unless you want that lesser detail smoothing effect) even thought it's a higher resolution.

Great Test Phil! Both the LF and the Monstro are of course great Cameras. As a Varicam user I am focused on great Colorscience. After this I am sure I will be switching from VariCam to the Monstro. At 3:30 the LF is drowning in noise. Colorwise I see nothing here a great colorist could not achieve from both cameras in post. But you can not unsee the Noise in the LF at ISO 3200. The Monstro knocks the ARRI out of the Park. The resolution and the noiselevels are simply lightyears ahead on the Monstro. Very helpful! Thank you!

To my eye. Monstro has better high iso performance. When the iso shifts from low to high, the mid&black keeps neutral than LF. the LF has visible green noise when the iso above 800. I do think Arri has better noise structure though, no visible fixed pattern. the DR is comparable in both camera I can't tell which on is better. I do like the arri's color science and how the same light source is redering different in arri. I mean, I haven't been impressed by the Arri's vista size sensor yet, which seems a sharper version of the regular Alexa for me. on the other hand, Monstro looks much better compare to the Helium.

I am not an expert at all, I don't own an HDR capable monitor but It has been correctly been calibrated, my visual acuity is 20/20 . And this is what I notice from my neutral point of view : - Alexa LF is oversharpening the image whereas the Monstro effortlessly renders a neutral amount of detail - When it comes to low light performance, the Alexa LF just throws the towel. Colors gets nuts, noises come to the party - For camera movement the Alexa LF produces more jittery images than the Monstro and this is all thanks to the native 8K format (or bitrate ?) - In daylight condition, It is not the Monstro that is oversaturated but this is really the Alexa LF lacking of dynamic range in the mid tones !! - ARRI Alexa LF handles glare much better. Color balance or color consistency looks better on the Monstro with your shots. Which is surprising since the best strength of ARRI Alexa was mostly its color science but now with the Monstro, at least with your samples I think RED finally took over the highest march of the podium. The physical chemical film tint of the Alexa LF is not worth it anymore, a LUT will do the job on the Monstro if you are really looking for that kind of aspect since the colors are already correct, its easier to step down in color consistency when you have them right at first. Congrats for the take & composition at 5:07 because this is a perfect case to compare both cameras. Not only for skin tones but also the background color & dynamic range too. On the Alexa we can notice the over exposition inside the lamp in daylight mode, skin tones looks incorrect and dull (not flat, dull.) Everyone's hair are glowing and shadows gets crushed. You can't find any of that on the RED Monstro take but comes at a cost, introducing a bit of noise. Also, the RED Monstro seems to grasp an even better color consistency when using daylight only whereas the ARRI Alexa has a slightly better survival rate when coupled with Tungsten light but still not as consistent as the Monstro. This is even more interesting now since these cameras have a comparable sensor size. We could restart the debate about pixel size vs pixel count. In this case 8K seems to have brought a better quality than some thick and plumpy pixels. And mostly, thank you for making this test available to everyone in here, that was fascinating to see the Alexa LF getting overtaken in many cases.

Interesting, and accurate, notes. But he says in a reply to another comment that he did not grade the Arri footage and he did grade the RED. So some color "issues" could have been handled in a simple grade session on the Arri and those same potential issues were likely graded out on the RED. It's a good test but always be aware that what you're looking at has been manipulated already. Really have to go and do something yourself if you want to see differences.

Incredible test and very informative. I was impressed to see how far RED has come and how it can really compete with Arri in some areas. Well with the Monstro anyway. Alexa still has slightly more pleasing skin tones IMO but that can also be preference. I also see more variations of color in the Arri for some reason and that is on a compressed YT video so I can only imagine what it's like out of camera. Very apparent on the girl on the left in that scene comparing skin tones. Dynamic range is insane on both cameras and the red is the clear winner in low light. Can't say the same for the other RED models though which seem to have much higher noise even at 800/1600 ISO. Thanks for sharing!

ARRI shifts Reds and Yellow towards Magenta, Blues and Green towards Cyan, and desaturates Yellows to improve skintones, that is their trick. Overall ARRi has more moody, less saturated tones, giving a more pleasing image out of the box, but It is less accurate to the real world. One thing i did not expect, is for RED to have better Dynamic Range and Lowlight performance.

More or less the same! Good to know. Different colors a bit, but can be tweaked. Arri looks a bit nicer sometimes and retains more details in the highlights, but it is such a minuscule difference. I guess now it is down to what is more practical, better built, easier to use...

Astonishingly, RED is way softer than ARRI despite 8k.

K’s don’t mean much and aren’t a barometer for resolving power. They’re just a hot term to make people buy cameras and think they have more resolution when they don’t. Watch steve yedlin’s resolution demo for great proof of that.

A beginner question here... I would prefer capture with BMPCC 6K and applying ARRI LUTs later for getting ARRI's nice-looking skin tones. does it work?

Hi, Phil, your test is beautiful. But with others DP's we have a doubt about what kind of lights are on the "exterior night". Do you know what type of light source is it?

So from the dynamic range chart, I'm seeing the Monstro with 15 stops, and the Arri with 13.5 stops. This is surprising...

@@riophae Yes, for the first time I am seeing that Red has 16+ stops not using HDRx. I think it is the IPP2 as well as Monstro. Also the 8K makes noise smaller. RED clean enough to eat off of. ARRI five second rule... ha!

This test doesn't sit right in some ways, but it's hard to assess the actual differences between the cameras without seeing log footage. It feels like you have pushed the shadows further down in post on the Alexa footage than what would normally happen with just a "REC 709 LUT". I would be very interested in seeing Log frame grabs from both cameras. Anyone who goes through this amount of effort for a comparison will usually show what both cameras are doing before any LUT or color grade. Overall, this test feels a little fishy honestly

2:42 Look at this! Lens flares on Arri camera looks fantastic! But at RED you see low vibrance and clipping on hightlights! And i think that 8k resolution does not give advantages to the RED cam (sry for my english)
