I think the reason I love the RED ONE is because of that green tint it in some of the dark shots... it gives me all kinds of 2000's movie vibes which is not a bad thing...

Thanks Aaron and Kat, these videos were very helpful and you actually inspired me to pick one up yesterday :) I did my first camera test this evening and I am very very happy with the results :) I believe the Red has a very organic texture baked into the digital negative, its like the sensor takes the light and instead of reproducing the light as captured, it decides to blend and paint that light onto a creamy canvass behind the sensor to create the final image, that's why it feels heavier, more filmic and dense. The best way I can describe it is like this, the newer cameras capture images too pristine like IPhone pics, however, the Red captures and reproduces images like a nostalgic Polaroid in a digital format, the digital noise even emulates film grain so each image from the Red feels very nostalgic and very tangible. I have an Ursa mIni 4k, it is a great camera too, but its like you gotta work on the image to create that organic canvass vibe that the Red automatically produces. Thanks for making this video it was a massive help, keep up the great content and big shout out to Mustin too :)

Hey guys, thanks so much for these videos, we just picked up a Red One MX here in the UK largely thanks to your videos, and it’s awesome! This is what I struggled with earlier this year when I sold my Sony CineAlta F35 (2008) for a Pocket 6K. The F35 had a beautiful organic image (and global shutter!)... the end result was just like film, albeit 1080p, but it was also 26 pounds modestly rigged up. For a one-man-band like me making short films, it's just not practical. Moving to BRAW also opened my eyes to more flexible color grading. I really loved the P6K too, but now I landed on the best of both worlds: URSA Mini Pro 4.6K. Beautiful sensor, SDI, I still have BRAW, and it's not so tiny that every vibration is amplified like in the Pocket cams. Anyway, that was my similar journey, thanks for sharing yours (and great footage btw!)

Haha we are dealing with the same struggle! We have been on the fence about selling the R1MX and moving to the new Canon EOS R5 or R6 but we will miss the Red if we do. For now we will hang onto it. The original MX sensor on the Red One just had a really nice look and feel to the image, there's an organic quality to it. The BM sensors haven't reached that point to me yet. The more recent Red sensors haven't piqued my interest in the same way, but that original MX was so special. Also, I know seeing these side by side on KZbin won't truly give you the full picture. But just seeing how the skin tones read on this test I can say the MX is way more desirable.

It's amazing to see a camera that costs so little hold its own against a camera that costs so much. I'm not gonna be biased and say the BMPCC4k is better because I don't own a RED, however, the image coming out of this little body is pretty AMAZING!!! The RED still has a slight edge over it in terms of the image quality (which is expected for that price). As a Sony Filmmaker, I have seen all I need to see to conclude that this camera (BMPCC4k) is the BEST investment any serious Filmmaker can make & I am going to get myself one. Yes we know it takes rigging, has no autofocus, poor battery life, etc but it was designed specifically for SERIOUS Filmmakers. Thank you for this test, it was well done!

this was a great, great video. you think you didn't have much but you did. the RED ONE MX is the only camera on the market that was created to simulate film. every other camera on the market today is too digital, that's why the look straight out the the RED camera looks more organic and film like where as the POCKET 4K looks digital, even with this video that you did and KZbin"S compression rate I can still see the RED's organic film look. this should be the go to video for anyone who ever wants to see the difference from digital to organic film look. great video.

6:43 could be the sensor size too giving you then feeling of weight. Besides that I remember one of the higher ups at ARRI talk about their image being more dense. I'm sure you can find this talk on youtube somewhere. It was an interesting talk. If you were to think about it in terms of processing muscle, the RED sensor is probably a much more capable of giving that data to the processor (think cache, bus and ram speed on a PC) and the processing muscle itself probably being much more intense in the RED likely really stacks each frame with image data. Blackmagic always seems a big mushy to me. I've had several. I like the image, it's just a little fake. Or "magic" in that it's kind of faking the process of getting a dense image. Not sure how else to explain it. The image blur they've always toted as a feature to look more filmic, but I really think it's more of a way for them to get away with a lense densely processed image and market it in a fancy way. I've shot a lot on both and RED (and ARRI) images are just so packed and full.

Great comparison! Loved the video. The Red separates itself from the bmpcc by rendering colors in a more reduced / refined palette. (That’s something an ARRI does too) Highlights / Shadows display less vibrancy & color deportation. It’s a dramatic image, giving you a „look“ right out of the box. The Blackmagic on the other hand is more scientific, retaining color range in shadows & highlights better while capturing a higher dynamicrange. With time the grading Suite you can adjust the look to match the red - knowing blackmagic however, this takes time & finesse. My suggestion would be: For drama the red will shine under controlled lighting conditions - especially in action genre or similar. In corporate, ads or documentaries the blackmagic will give you an image that’s closer to life & can be adjusted down if needed.

It's a shame but KZbin really degraded this organic quality and depth the RED has. We went ahead and uploaded raw clips of both cameras for you to download and apply your own gamma profiles and color grade. We like the crunchy look of the gamma profile on the RED but it probably wasn't the best profile to use for a comparison, a lot of people prefer the lower contrast look of the BMPCC 4K profile. Therefore, we wanted to make sure you have access to the raw files for both cameras, especially the RED in redlog gamma so you can see in much greater detail how these cameras compare. KZbin compression sure doesn't help! We also included a log profile screenshot so you can see the RED without so much contrast. Peace! @facuuaf

The dead giveaways were: 1. The RED has a shallower depth of field since it's larger than Micro 4/3 (the speedboaster can't change that, DOF is the same). 2. REDs always have this huge green tint in the shadows and midtones 3. Since it's an older digital camera the highlights are just a bit more blown out, and it's native ISO is 160 rather than 400

I honestly thought it was the other way around. I really didn't think the P4K would look better than the RED. I was wrong. The DR was better. It looked more cinematic, where the RED had more of a "video camera" look.
@eyalgreen8285
@eyalgreen8285 3 жыл бұрын
I agree with everything except the last part, I think the RED has way more of a filmic look straight out of camera. However I think the RED One MX is obsolete at this point, the BMPCC4K won in basically every single category except for filmic look (in my opinion), and this can be corrected in the BMPCC easily in post or by using filters. These guys are clearly very biased towards the RED and are convincing themselves to keep it imo

@@TheTillmanSneakerReview Fair enough, I've personally never used BRAW so I wouldn't know about that. I personally shoot on older RED and it works great, but I would definitely have preferred if I went back in time and bought a more modern "cinema" camera like a FS7 or more likely a UMP G2. Way sharper and more modern image, WAY easier to use.

I'm pretty sure you can match the Blackmagic to the RED with ACES color space in Resolve. I do love the RED One MX. The weight and form factor does force you to use proper hollywood camera skills, that being said, the Blackmagic can be used with the same skill set and is vastly preferable to use in guerrilla filmmaking as it is easy to jump in, set up, shoot, get out. Also, being so compact and light weight does allow you to make your setups faster which can allow you to be more productive on a shoot. Additionally, it's high sensitivity does reduce the size of you lighting package, which also saves a lot your budget. Both cameras are fantastic, I would love to shoot on a RED ONE again.

That was wild - I liked Camera A more AND I thought it was the Red One MX, which was wild. Camera A was softer, which was especially noticeable with the field shot with the wheat in the foreground. When I saw that shot on Camera B it felt more jerky and too much of the wheat was in focus and so it was almost assaulting to me as the viewer (if that makes sense). I also didn't like the green tint in the downtown shots from Camera B. In the end it was two different cameras that provided two great images that can be used for different approaches to creating films - no way to lose with either one.

To be completely honest, as someone who has had the pocket 4K for 2.5 years and who has never owned or planned to use a RED, I was thinking the whole time that cam A had to be the RED because it had a much softer dynamic range, and it didn't have this super intense contrast that I was seeing on cam B, especially in the field. I felt as the test went on, I prefered cam A more and more, especially in the low-light portion, the whole time thinking it "had to be the RED" since it had a much higher initial price tag, but I was wrong. Turns out, the one I prefered 90% of the time was the one I already had, go figure

It funny how hype over Red cameras has influenced some of the viewers here. BMPCC4k has noticeably better dynamic range - that's the reason RED has "already color corrected" image. It's 2022 now, camera hardware has improved so much in last 15 years, it's really crazy. I'm sure that if an asteroid would hit the earth and destroy all other cameras except BMPCC4k ;) and filmmakers would use all the gear they normally use when shooting movies with it, then no one would complain about image quality, it would still look fantastic.

The difference is small in broad daylight but gets massive as shadows are introduced. Even tho the difference might seem small, its that small difference that will decide if the footage will look like a holywood movie or just a neat video. Same with lenses. Yes photo lenses look almost the same as expensive cinema beasts, yet that tiny difference will make it look something else. In theory it might be possible to make a bmpcc footage look "The social network" with grading but where exactling will you find someone who can achieve that? And the guy might cost more than buying a RED. Nothing to complain about the blackmagic, but this have just convinced me even more that grabbing somthing like a red is worth.

The thing that separates R3D color science from blackmagic is the uniformity. All the hues seem to be even in saturation, whereas I feel the blackmagic has a particular issue with certain hues (red channel) clipping earlier than the others. It throws things out of whack. You need a real good LUT to address this.

Cam B looked more organic....Same problem is having too much gear and weight. I think the best middle ground would be the pocket 6k and then renting a good cine lens like the Atlas Orion. For smaller projects just get some good vintage Canon FD. It's never going to look as organic as the RED but unless you are shooting often or have your friends work for free as your crew it really is too costly to get the more professional camera.

I could make a panasonic gf2 look like these things. These days all cameras are much a muchness. What you pay for is the flexibilty and ability to do anything you want with it. The gf2, for example, would require a shit tonne of work to get there and it's fixed. These cameras require less work and give you options. So, between these two higher end cameras, either is fine.

Well that was a surprise, I thought Camera A looked so much better and assumed it was going to be the Red.

I like camera A better. More DR in the highlight is better than in the shadows

The problem with any Black Magic camera. Is that it feels like video, not cinema! Nr1 reason is in camera sharpening. It sharpens too much. Its the same what phones do now, take shity picture and just aply sharpen algorithms. Actualy they look very close. I could tell that second one is Red though. Because the first one looks like video. Like camcorder... Maybe it would help if you would get rid of all the possible sharpening for BM. And all contrast in camera while shooting. That might help a little. And then if needed add post sharpen.

Owned the red so long I could tell right away the red was cam b. Before it was even showed. Just because of how low light was handled on the black magic.

Love these! I'm impressed by the pocket 4k, but to me the Red One wins in "film look". I'm kind of old school as well so

I was so glad I guessed right on the BMPCC. (Because I just bought one and also can’t afford a RED!) The RED looks more saturated for sure (harder contrast too) but I liked CAM 1 better on every shot.

Color correction for bmpcc would make it unrecognizable. I’d personally stick with the bmpcc4k. Currently I have two 4K’s and is about to purchase the 6k. A person can have a full quality studio for the price of just one Red Camera.

BlackMagic to me looks so digital... of course red is digital as well but it doesn't look so digital. Definitely more organic. I've seen so many tests on KZbin and BlackMagic just doesn't do it for me, yes some footage looks nice but not really for cinema. There was one music video using BMPCC6k and some grading where it kinda look like Red, but it still wasn't convincing to me.. getting close is cool but seems like one have to do extra work just to get it close to that look, where Red a director spends less time worrying about that and having one less thing to worry about.

Easy... Red has that magic.. its a movie cinema camera. But you can Sixten and colourgrade pocket etc.. i say never sell red as long you can film with IT.. and red cameras are getting smaller and not that expensive like red Komodo?? Was it

It definitely does with the RedGamma profile we used. I'm personally a fan of more contrasty images but we should have used RedLog instead and graded them closer to match but didn't think about it!
