When this show first aired, it was tragic for me. Not because of the content, but because of circumstance. My family has a terrible record of telling me "Come do this, it'll be on again" and always being wrong. Red Planet was such an incident. So now, around, what, 20 years later? I finally get to finish it. Gods bless the internet!

Similar situation for me. Saw the first 10 minutes and the last 10 minutes as a kid. Had no idea what happened in between. My parents always assumed cartoons never advanced beyond Scooby Doo in terms of complexity and theme. I remember having to explain the racial undertones and exploration of severe mental illness in the old X-men series. My Dad was shocked, as he was seeking justification for why we wanted to watch Saturday morning cartoons. 25 years later and my Dad is a huge MCU fan.

Thanks so much for preserving, restoring, and sharing this with us. The animation reminds me a lot of the Star Trek: the Animated Series episodes, done by Filmation. The animation technique used was very common at the time of production. This is based on the quite excellent and rightly famous "juvenile" novel by Robert A Heinlein, aimed at readers from about 5th grade and up, where the story line took place on Mars as it was thought to be back before real space probes ever got near that planet. As time and science moved forward, you couldn't set a story there. But before we knew better, Heinlein wrote his classic and influential "Stranger in a Strange Land", in which the first human ship to Mars seems to have been destroyed right after landing, but the second expedition finds one survivor, a boy born even as the ship landed... raised by the Martians. Or, as in this adaptation, "the Locals". I recommend reading both books, "Red Planet" first, although in Heinlein's vast fictional universe, this happens a little later. Again, thanks for sharing this.

Maaaaan, it wouldn't be a 90's kids cartoon if it wasn't trying to also spoon feed a "save the environment" message in there somewhere XD Man, had some good memories of Saturday mornings watching this show then going outside to pretend I was riding Jim's hoverbike. Was so sad that one Saturday where it didn't come on. I didn't realize the show had ended and kept expecting reruns to happen. What sucked the worst was none of the kids in my class knew what I was talking about when I described it. Thx man for putting this together!

I've always had vivid memories of seeing this as a young kid and being terrified of the water seekers and sand beast. The scene where the water seekers are chasing the transport vehicle and ramming into it was one of the few scenes that stuck out in my memory. I used to constantly search the internet for any evidence that this actually existed and wasn't some weird fever dream I had but nothing ever came up. I had no idea what it was called, where I saw it, WHEN I saw it, so I'd just run searches for "Mars cartoon water seekers". Finally managed to find an upload here on youtube after so long. There's one scene in particular though that wasn't in this upload. One of the few scenes that stuck in my very vague memory of this cartoon. It was a scene showing the outer fence perimeter of the colony at dusk. Some kind of floating octopus-like creature (I think it was purple with one eye) tried to fly over the fence and an automatic gun swiveled around and blasted it into nothing. Not sure if that was from a different version of this cartoon, if it was left out of this upload for some reason or if it was from a completely different cartoon and I'm just mixing them together because they featured a very similar alien planet setting??

The first version begins with Jim and Willis heading back into the colony just as the storm arrives. The second version contained some new animation at the beginning, which depicts life in the colony, how Jim met Willis, and the side effects that the miners were suffering from. In the second version, the rest of the story remains the same after Jim and Willis get back to the colony. However, to keep the miniseries the same length, some scenes were removed, while others were shortened.

The life cycle of the locals and the sad goodbye between the round head and his human friend were all quite philosophical and ironic what with how things usually go with our own cute furry companions. Overall a great story with some good info for kids about photosynthesis among other things. Oh yeah, back to the locals: that is really profound with the implication of the "animal" phase of life being like the "larval" phase for these more advanced life forms that transcend into a higher being in 3D reality. In my humble opinion, as someone who treasures Starship Troopers the novel, this cartoon is still THE best adaptation of any Heinlein story. Yes, there are big departures from the book, but many of them needed to be made because Heinlein wrote the original story back when it was still plausible that there was life on Mars. What I mean is, among film adaptations The Puppet Masters lacked quality, Starship Troopers' philosophy was butchered by the movie, the ST series looks horribly dated today, and Joss Whedon still hasn't gotten off his butt to do The Moon is a Harsh Mistress. This 'toon was high quality and captured the basic ingredients that made the book enjoyable as a piece of juvenile fiction. I used to reenact this cartoon with my Jurassic Park toys using the Rex in place of the water-seekers. I LOVED the design of the colony buildings and daydreamed in school about living in one.
