From just watching the playthrough, it kinda seems like because there's sooo many different color cards and sooo many different synergies available, that it actually causes an opposite effect and makes it difficult to actually be strategic with your plays. Almost like you're forced to just play whatever will give you the best reward on that turn, and not really plan out a few moves. Did you find that to be the case while playing, or am I off with that assessment?
@dranawor3 жыл бұрын
@@steven9766 I wonder if thats how initial playthroughs start, a sort of roll with the punches approach where you are just trying to maximize turn by turn, but as you play the game more and more, you learn what pairs well with what, what cards to look out for, what combos well with your hand or whats on the board/banished and what possibilities there are of cards coming out based on ones you have already seen.

I keep seeing comparisons to the game Jamey himself said was the major influencer of this game, Fantasy Realms. That, and Arboretum even gets thrown around as a comparison. I know this will be the new hotness because of Stonemaier Games, but this game doesn't look that interesting. I've read all the books, and this doesn't really seem to evoke them much to me. The game seems fiddly, and the endgame scoring seems like a nightmare. (From a 40-minute video, 10 was teaching, 20 was playing, and 10 was scoring. Scoring took half as long as playing the actual game.) The whole thing seems like a colorful math problem.
@Djaian23 жыл бұрын
I kind of see your point. To me, there seems to be quite a lot of randomness in the card draw. You could get a huge combo by chance. Is the winner really the player with the best skills, or just the luckier? Difficult to say after seeing only 1 playthrough. Now, when comparing to "Fantasy Realms" (which is the mechanical inspiration for this game), it looks like "Red Rising" is already a lot less random that Fantasy Realms. Regarding the thematic, I didn't read the books yet, but this game had me really interested in them. Now, Jamey said that the game is not a "story" game that follows the plot of the books. The thematic connection is there because some cards will score you more points with other cards and that reflects the fact that in the books the characters interacted together or have a love or hate relationship. There are other small connections (e.g. the grey cards can replace any color, because security can touch all the castes and arrest/free people easily, the yellow cards can un-banish other cards which is thematically linked to the fact that banishing is equivalent to killing and yellow are doctors, and so on). I am still not sure if this game is for me (and for the people I usually play with), but one aspect that I really like, is that many cards have a deploy bonus that would actually help the end scoring of the card, but if you deploy the card you do not keep it in your hand. E.g. "Gain helium when deployed, score more points at the end if you have more helium." So, there is a lot of decisions to make. Enough to make the game interesting? Fun after several plays? We will see... Regarding the math problem: this game needs an app that help you calculate your score when you enter your hand :-)

Great playthrough, as always - it managed to show very well how the game plays, so again, great job :) I hate to be the naysayer in a second video in a row, but the game doesn't quite click for me. Objectively, you showed only a small part of the game, since as you said, there are more than 100 cards in the deck and there are a lot of possible combinations. Still, gameplay seems somewhat bland, in my opinion. It is probably a completely subjective thing, but I don't see anything to say - look, I want to play this one. It may be because I know nothing of the lore this game is based on. Judging from Monique's reactions, character portrayals in the game are spot on, so the game seems to do well on theme at least. Also, the game's art is splendid and I like the iconography a lot. However, I do find gameplay somewhat repetitive, as there isn't an awful lot of things to do there. I don't mind the medium weight of the game, but there doesn't appear to be a lot of difference from the actions you take. Effectively, all actions lead to one or more of the following: 1) you change card placement from one column to another or to the banish pile; 2) you rearrange the cards in your hand; and 3) you advance on one (or maybe more) of the three tracks. Again, I don't think I've seen enough of this game to make a final judgment, but these are my initial thoughts. Maybe my expectations are too high, as games don't necessarily need to have that wow factor all the time. Still, I expected more. Let's hope I am proven wrong on this one, I like Stonemaier Games a lot and I wish Jamie Stegmeyer all the best! :)

The thing about starting cards is that you still have to manage the criteria on the card as well as make sure other cards do not interact negatively with it. Really liked the rewardingness of the game with that put-activate/take-activate (that reminds me of Raiders of the North Sea). The rewards chain is something Stonemaier does pretty well and I like it. I don't know if this will be a must buy for me, I'll probably wait to see if some publisher publishes it in portuguese (since I can see it played with almost everyone if I remove language barrier), but I'm convinced I'll enjoy it. My main concern is also the deck exploration on 2P game - since every card in unique, and the game is about combos, going through 25% of the deck could cause frustration and the game can become too luck dependent. Will be listening to your opinions on monday.

Thank you for a wonderful video! You taught me, you made me laugh, you made me smile. :) Your chemistry really adds to the enjoyment. I just subscribed to your channel and look forward to more reviews!

I hope SM games are paying you for this. You donalot with your channel to promote games. You both are the best at going through quick rules, and explaining what happens bring the playthrough. This channel has been very guilty in encouraging me to buy more games. That Pfister series made a serious dint in my bank account. Also, GWT trilogy - how exciting

Thank you for the detailed playthrough, it was very informative and enjoyable despite its length. What I would like to know for your review video is: Do you think at larger player counts (4-5 players) the individual downtime between turns will become a problem? Also, I feel like the cards being stacked the way they are may lead to people constantly checking what's below the top card to make sure they don't make something available to others they shouldn't. I don't know what a good solution to this would look like or if it maybe even is an intentional part of the design (what do you think?), but as someone prone to analysis paralysis I would have loved to be able to see all the cards in the columns at once. Maybe I'm spoiled by digital games after a year of lockdown :) Cheers!

Man I'm such a sucker for clever-playing card games, I may have to get this one...also trying to get the books from the LA library! Great playthrough as always you two!

SPOILER! - That was not nice Naveen. :) Great watch. Thank you.

Also as another person suggested in the comments, this game seems to be far more interesting for those invested in the characters and the IP. From your playthough i think i might enjoy it, but to truly love it, i should read the books first.

Having some knowledge of the books certainly brings up the excitement, but it's certainly not necessary. :-)

Spoiler Year of Naveen! I didn't want to like this game, but I really do. Fantasy Realms is a blast.

I would like to ask is it every single card in this game is unique? Like Wingspan?
@davidrendsburg93633 жыл бұрын
In terms of character name/art yes. although some within a color caste have similar/same abilities.
@BeforeYouPlay3 жыл бұрын
Yup, just like David said.

I was worried about bringing this game home to non-red-rising fans, even with Jamey saying it was okay. Most of the cards you used (except for end game scoring) were generic roles and it still seemed like a blast. I really liked this. Plays fast for how thinky it is.
