I like how this movie was filmed. It has kind of the same technique or feel as Margin Call - the dialog is very even-keeled and it feels like you're almost in the same room with these people for many of the scenes.

My favorite part of this clip (in large part because Pete is himself a take on Paul Podesta), is that Jonah's character is basically arguing himself out of a laughable raise. Like, "Pete" got traded for some 7tn round pick; soda money got traded in another. If the GM is getting paid $12.5mil/yr, surely his assistant GM is either making 7 figures himself...or he's the new A's GM at also a 7-figure deal. Its a lovely scene for baseball fans; but the man (as written in the film) cost himself hundreds of thousands a year immediately, and probably tens of millions over his career (maybe even hundreds of millions if Billy Beane goes to BOS and instantly wins and he becomes the immediate Yankees GM, etc) all to argue a thing he hasnt really argued in the film to that point (that theres still a heart behind the statistics)

What was the meaning behind the dude hitting a home run and not knowing it?
@Whatisright11 күн бұрын
This movie has so far been about raw numbers and data. That moment is what the game and sports are all about, overcoming and doing the impossible. Seeing someone overcome and doing what they themselves thought was impossible. What no one expected. Fans don’t just want a winner they want a warrior. With the big guy it’s seeing someone overcome and realize something about themselves and everyone happy for him in the moment.
@JoniAntonioo9 күн бұрын
The metaphor is that sometimes in life you are held back by your fears, even though you are fully capable of achieving those things you think you aren't good enough for. Billy didn't think he was worth $12 mill, yet he was to the right organization, the red sox at the time had an 84 year drought, they were willing to buy a championship.
@Whatisright9 күн бұрын
@@JoniAntonioo Sports is one way a lot of people get to visualize the impossible. To learn how to overcome, and what’s important. There’s a reason it’s a religion to some people.

@RayB5010 күн бұрын
@bdcopp @bdcopp Because if he had went on to the red sox , it's quite possible that he would have been the one to lead then them to their first world series championship in eighty six years in 2004. They hired terry francona instead and he won in 2004 using the methods from this movie. But instead He is still with the Athletics Chasing that world series championship he will probably never get. The Red Sox have had 4 since then.

Billy Beane (Brad Pitt): "I was grateful for the call" John Henry (Arliss Howard): "You were grateful. For forty-one million you built a playoff team. You lost Damon, Giambi, Isringhausen, Pena, and you won more games without them than you did with them. You won the exact same number of games that the Yankees won, but the Yankees spent 1.4 million per win and you paid 260,000. I know you're taking it in the teeth out there, but the first guy through the wall, he always gets bloody. Always. This is threatening not just a way of doing business but in their minds it's threatening the game. But really what it's threatening their livelihood. It's threatening their jobs. It's threatening the way that they do things. And every time that happens, whether it's a government or a way of doing business or whatever it is, the people who are holding the reins, have their hands on the switch, they go batshit crazy. I mean, anybody who's not tearing their team down right now, and rebuilding it using your model, they're dinosaurs. They'll be sitting on their ass, on the sofa in October, watching the Boston Red Sox win the World Series. --Moneyball
