Red Spurfowl (Galloperdix spadicea) foraging on forest floor filmed at Vansda National Park, Gujarat, India.
We frequently ran into these shy and secretive fowls into the park premises. The number of fowls has increased dramatically over the last couple of years. Only a few years back, photographing a Red Spurfowl in VNP was rare. These fowls blend well in this semideciduous forest due to their reddish-brown plumage. They usually keep a safe distance from tourist vehicles. If you step down from your car, they will definitely be gone in seconds. We have to be silent and wait patiently in our vehicles. Only then you may have a chance to get some decent pics or a nice shoot.
Here we got this pair foraging fondly on the forest floor. It looks like they are feeding on red ants! This food provides pure protein supplements, which they need essentially. It forages primarily on the forest floor, searching for food among leaf litter, undergrowth, and soil. You can observe its foraging style, scratching the ground with its feet to uncover insects, seeds, and other small invertebrates. It's a real fun to watch them hunt around gracefully on the ground. The dense cover of forests provides them with ample food resources and protection from predators. Red Spurfowls also consume fruits, small reptiles, and plant material, making them omnivorous.
Spurfowl derive their name from the distinctive spurs on their feet. These small, pointed projections, located on their legs, are characteristic of this group of birds within the Phasianidae family, which also includes pheasants and other related species. The spurs serve several important functions, such as self-defense against predators and rivals. The size and sharpness of the spurs act as visual and physical indicators of a bird's strength and fitness. Males with prominent spurs often have better chances of reproducing. Overall, the spurs play a crucial role in the survival, social structure, and reproductive dynamics of spurfowl.
