Hi! These are great news, I'm really eager to see what comes out of this partnership. Even if I'm a Canon shooter, this will push the industry further. Another thing that I think it'll help is to release Nikon's sensors from Sony, meaning that Nikon will be able to make their own high end sensors in RED. This will definitely shake the camera world. Well done Nikon! All best

I've learned things about these patent applications in the camera world from watching your videos, especially the fact that the timing of publishing them really is strategic. This one looks like a shot across the bow by Nikon. Like they are saying that they aren't afraid to tip their hand because they aren't worried about the other manufacturers copying them. The moment I saw the announcement that Nikon bought RED I thought that it signalled that they were about to make a move to regain their old status in the industry. It may have started out as just a patent infringement settlement, but I think the result will be some serious competitive advantage for Nikon. Global shutter really just has two advantages - no rolling shutter distortion and high speed flash sync. Truthfully, the high speed flash sync isn't a huge factor for the vast majority of photographers, so this is mostly about the rolling shutter distortion. As long as they can align pixels from the top of the frame to the bottom of the frame, I don't really care how they do it. And the readout on most of the new sensors is already so fast that they have all but eliminated rolling shutter distortion. Make it just a little bit better, and it becomes a non-factor. What interests me the most about this discussion in your video is the possibility of 17 stops of dynamic range (without resorting to some sort of scammy measuring method). The amount of rolling shutter distortion in the R5II was slight enough. But if it could have delivered 17 stops of dynamic range as well? Well, you used the term "game-changer" in your video, and I don't have any better words than that. I've been eyeballing an X2D lately, and even it "only" has 15 stops of dynamic range. If Nikon leverages RED technology and gives us 17 stops of dynamic range and near-zero rolling shutter distortion? That's worthy of a platform change. I'm glad you're out there sifting through these patent filings so I don't have to.

This patent application has woken me up to what Nikon might be cooking ;) I'm going to spend more time on them :) While we may not know for sure if, how and when the patent could be applied, it is far from conjecture as it comes directly from Nikon. 17 stops is good. The R5 II with CL2 gives 16 stops, or 13.5 actual using industry standards - it makes huge difference. I'll take a deeper look through the patent later this evening ;)

Hi Simon, alrighty .. after the first partially stacked sensor we may expect a partially global sensor. I just can't wrap my head around how they'll decide which photodiodes require higher dynamic range and which ones cannot afford a rolling shutter .. imagine a fast flapping bird: you want the global sensor diodes on the bird, and the background can enjoy rolling shutter for dynamic range, right ? But when you're panning to follow that bird, you want to opposite to avoid rolling distortion in the trees or poles in the background .. but how will the camera tell the bird to stop flapping its wing for a while ??? I could see a benefit in a sensor working as a whole in either a global shutter or rolling shutter mode .. and that may well end up in the Z9ii. But reading half the pixels one way and the other different smells like opening a can of worms ..

Canon gave the answer when bring a new AI microship in R5 Mark II. Because the new one read before the caption, and could expouse it better. That's it, a new way to do the same result. I think.

If you do the pixel density math, Nikons 20mp APSC sensor is about the same as the 45mp FF sensor. With that being said, what if it’s a 45mp rolling shutter with max DR in one mode, then a 20mp global shutter in another mode. Even at APSC size it would be better than a standard APSC sensor. Maybe that’s why Nikon hasn’t released a mirrorless D500 yet. This would be ground breaking.

I've wondered if its possible for them to have variable pixel density on a sensor, for DX mode, so if you shoot in DX mode it has more pixels in the part of the sensor that DX mode would use, but in FX mode it has its normal set of pixels.. A sensor that can act as both global and rolling at the same time kinda gives me hope for that.

That sounds exiting indeed! I think it would be a great idea to use that sensor technology and make a mirrorless successor to the D500! Exciting times!

@@num1hendrickfan When you say they "essentially abandoned", what do you mean exactly? They are not as active as with their full frame line, but they are bound to release an APSC camera in the next couple of weeks/months, while Z50 is selling like crazy even to this day. Also, Sigma started making APSC lenses for Nikon Z mount, do you think they are doing it because Nikon abandoned APSC? And it's not only Sigma... P. S. I wouldn’t get too excited. Red’s sensors are designed for Cinema cameras; Due to the massive cooling requirements and 10x greater power draw they are not suitable for use in a mirrorless body. Sony’s Global shutter consumes 1/10th the power… It can operate within a passively cooled weather sealed body. And amazing, matches the Red V-Raptor-X in exposure latitude. It’s far superior to anything Red (who btw, does not make sensors) could hope to dream up. FYI: I’m a long time Red shooter.

@christophercarlimages90032 ай бұрын
Let Nikon build a brand new video centric mirrorless camera with Red tech. I don't want them to jam more video into their stills flagship. The poor dynamic range of a global shutter especially in high resolution sensors is a big trade off. Likely Nikon would go the Canon route of yet more 24 mpx cameras to introduce that. Z8/Z9 don't need to go backwards in resolution.

You are using the terminology wrong: rolling shutter is not “motion blur”. A global shutter reads out the frame at the shutter speed set: if you are acquiring footage at 24 fps, and using 180 degree shutter then your shutter speed is 1/48 of a second. You will have more motion blur in faster moving objects, but the “jello effect” of traditional sensor read out will be gone, as the whole “global sensor” is being read the whole 1/48 of a second that it captures the image from. Motion blur is actually important in filming, and video looks like bad GoPro footage when the shutter speed isn’t set at the right speed (that is why ND filters are used to get the shutter speed down).

Having acquired Red Komodo, it's remote that Nikon would try to merge Red Technology into existing Nikon product line... Nikon bought Red because Nikon did not have expertise in videography capabilities... Hence it's obvious that Nikon will keep Red seperate and only the Z mount and Z lenses on the Red cameras will be seen. Also whatever Videography related codecs of Red exist these will be scaled down and we might find these trickling into the Z series Nikon bodies... More than this don't expect any drastic changes in this arena....
