"Use the GH4 for low light" As a GH4 owner, I can confirm that is terrible advice. Lol
@thebrothersthre39877 жыл бұрын
Its really not bad in low light if you use the right settings. Do you disable noise reduction? I find when you have it all the way up it helps a lot too. 1000 iso seems usable if the lighting is correct.

Hey! Well, the GH4 is a bit out dated this point. The GH5 & GH5s are amazing. With the 400mb/s recording, and beautiful colors, those are solid choices. The A7III has amazingly fast autofocus, and nice large sensor. But it's data codec is weak. Both you can buy a metabones adapter for your canon lenses. Hope this helps!

As a beginner, where can I read about the V-log, compression and LUTs ? I want to understand what do these words mean. Thanks
@LixiStudios8 жыл бұрын
Hi Dima - I would try googling each keyword. But for a quick intro: LUTs: Are "color looks" put over footage, to give a quick color correction Compression: A term with how the background changes due to focal length. For simplicity, the more you "zoom" into a subject, the background will be larger V-Log: Is a "Flat" profile on the GH4 which means its a neutral look. You can get more out of color correction that way.
@dimal3638 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the answer, I realy appreciate it! I was wondering, maybe there is an online course that you can recommend so I could learn the basics of cinematography in terms of for instance: lenses, RAW vs RGB, 4:4:4 vs 4:2:2, anamorphic vs spherical. I watched many videos on youtube, most of them are for pro users. I know I can easyly find many DSLR cinematography tutorials, and practice with DSLR camera, but I want one day rent a RED Epic or ARRI Alexa camera and really understand the settings and and the differences between them. Thanks a lot.

In 40 years as a photographer and videographer I have never heard shallow DOF called compression.
@LixiStudios8 жыл бұрын
+kipling1957 Hey there! DOF & Compression are two different things. Compression is more related to the apparent size of the background image related to the foreground image, in relation to lens sizes. This also helps "blur out" the backgrounds. DOF is different. @LixiStudios8 жыл бұрын
+Red Umbrella the XL is .64x (Making the lens wider), as well as 1 1/3 stops. The Ultra is .71x, and opens up 1 stop for the lens. We use the Xl, because it lets in more light so that would be our recommendation.
@dnawemedia8 жыл бұрын
One question I've always had and never found an answer to is if you're still able to use the native Panasonic MFT lenses with the Metabones adaptor on the GH4.
@jonathanlegoman33788 жыл бұрын
The Metabones adapter adapts the camera's MFT mount to a full frame mount (Canon/Sony/Nikon). There would be no need to adapt the GH4's MFT mount to a MFT lens. Just directly attach the lens to the camera.
@LixiStudios8 жыл бұрын
Good question! The metabones adapter makes a MFT mount into an EF mount. (Or whichever one you buy). If you want to use a MFT lens, just take off the adapter, and use it as normal.

I almost got the GH4 but when I learned about rolling shutter... Do you know any global shutter 4k camera that cost less then $1000?
@thebrothersthre39877 жыл бұрын
You really won't find one my man. The GH4 actually has one of the best rolling shutters for any camera in its price range. Even better if you shoot at 1080p. Even RED cameras have rolling shutter though. I wouldn't stress it honestly, just use rolling shutter correction tools if you do any really fast camera movements. Maybe it bothers you more then me though.

@V3Tv8 жыл бұрын
Why though, what advantages does it have over the GH4 or G80? I need it mainly for video, photo is just a bonus and not the main focus
@drewmorg.8 жыл бұрын
V3TV Network You mentioned that you cannot afford a prosumer one. The GH4 is roughly $1000 used + you need to buy a lense. The G7 you can find all over for $500-600 used with kit lense which is a very highly rated kit lense. They are essentially the same camera except the GH4 has access to better color profiles like V-Log for color grading the footage better afterward. People still color grade the G7 footage and it looks amazing. Look around KZbin and see for yourself. The G7 is primarily a video camera first, stills camera second. :)
@V3Tv8 жыл бұрын
I would just get the F1000 before the G7 simply due to the larger sensor and better resolution. Spending $1000 on this camera vs $3000 on a proper prosumer 4k is still a win, but I just don't like to buy old equipment when there is newer gear out (G80/85). I just wasn't sure which direction to head. Thanks

Question, doesn't the GH4 which is essentially a camera for photography lose dynamic range as you increase the ISO and if so, why would you shoot at the highest ISO possible?
@LixiStudios8 жыл бұрын
Good question.... Not sure about the real world effect of ISO on dynamic range. On the GH4, when you shoot in V-Log I believe the minimum ISO is 400 actually. But it's not you should shoot with high ISO, it's just that the GH4 handles higher ISO better than the Red Epic Dragon does. What do you think?
@Daffmeister1878 жыл бұрын
Aye, indeed it does and I know there's a bunch of video cameras that starts at a higher ISO than normal DSLR's/mirrorless cameras. But I meant it more as a counter to 3:01 in the video where she says "I will try to shoot at the highest ISO possible before the image gets too much noise". I just don't see the benefit in that as I like to keep the ISO as low as possible to retain dynamic range. I don't have a GH4 on my hands currently, but I'd give that statement a test out of curiosity if I had.

Awesome information! Very interesting to see... SO a few things. When we talk about High ISO on a GH4 we talk about 1600 as we find that's the usable level (which on that chart Dynamic Range is fairly consistent). The Red is only iso 800 while still being usable. As for the original sentence in the film, I think we should of rephrased. It's not that you should shoot at high iso's for no-reason. JUST that the GH4 performs better than the RED in low light situations, so you CAN properly expose your image without needing a ton of external lights as you would need with the RED. Either way, great points and information Daffmeister187!
@Daffmeister1878 жыл бұрын
Gotcha, when you specify what you fellas consider High ISO it became a lot more clear (I was thinking in the 64/12800-range). The GH4 sensor is remarkable at retaining base-ISO DR up to 16/3200 so I can for sure see the advantage of using it in the situation(s) you mentioned. Thanks for a constructive talk, I think I might just subscribe for the videos and how y'all engage with the community. Kudos and a soon Merry Christmas ^^

However, in his last works, Rome by Bike and Portrait of a Skyrunne, he shot 8bit and result is amazing
@drewmorg.8 жыл бұрын
What does shooting 8 bit mean?
@RYSEproductions8 жыл бұрын
drewmorgan basically, the lower the amount of 'bits' the more compressed your footage is. You get more artifacts like banding, and often less room to grade your footage. 10 bit is a huge improvement. Pretty much all cameras that record internally record 8 bit.

@mainlymusicman8 жыл бұрын
why do you want compression?
@LixiStudios8 жыл бұрын
+mainlymusicman Good question! Compression is a technique that allows you to make your background look larger in frame, and more dramatic. Additionally, when using a longer lens, the separation from your subject and the background will be more apparent, as your background will be more "blurred out" giving you that 'cinematic' look you get with larger sensor cameras.

Do you need an external recorder when shooting vlog?
@LixiStudios8 жыл бұрын
+Blah Blah Blah Nope, not at all! It's just an added Picture style in your camera, so when you change it in the menu and see your regular "Standard, Vivid, Natural" profiles you will see Vlog on the bottom of that list.
@raptorekpl8 жыл бұрын
+Lixi Studios I call total BS on that. V-log recorded internally completely falls apart. Color banding is absolutely horrible with 8 bit 4:2:0. You NEED external recorder capable of 10 bit 4:2:2 to make it work. Otherwise better stick to Cine-D which is fine in that price range.
@LixiStudios8 жыл бұрын
raptorekpl An external recorder is of course going to give you better results - no argument from us about that. However, we've had pretty good luck with the vlog (when compared to normal picture styles).
@raptorekpl8 жыл бұрын
Lixi Studios Well, ok. I assume it was a well lit studio enviroment. Now I dare you to try vlog on any wide gradient. If you don't have one - try the sky on a clear day. Look, I own GH4, I did my tests and I really like this camera, but there is stuff about it to be told very clear. If something is shit, we need to be real about it. Who would use an additional one f-stop when there is a huge chance that your colors are screwed beyond recovery beause internal codec couldn't handle it? Seriously guys, vlog is good. When you have atomos hooked up. Ohterwise going above cine-d is a bad idea. And no - your GH4 will not look like RED. That (just like the vlog thing) becomes clear when you move your butt from the comfort of the studio and go actually shoot stuff.
@improver18498 жыл бұрын
+raptorekpl Interesting points. What do you think of the sorta-kinda GH4 successor, the Leica SL? Much greater dynamic range. Great tonality. Still 4:2:0 internal for V-Log, as far as I know, but you can pump out 10 bit 4:2:2 to an Atomos or a Pix. However, despite the internal codec limitations, I've been impressed with the little video I've seen on KZbin and Vimeo. Leica, and/or whoever helped develop it, seems to have looked after the little details fairly well.

So your number one tip to make the GH4 look like the Red is get clean audio? And only shoot closeups with the GH4? And put interesting props in the background? Why? To distract the viewer? Those - especially 2 and 3 - seem to be more like accepting shortcomings of the GH4 compared to the Red. It sounds as though you're trying to make the viewer forget/not think about the image quality. Kind of like saying, "Make a compelling, riveting story and the audience won't care what camera you shoot on."
@LixiStudios7 жыл бұрын
Hey Andrew! Thanks for the great feedback, a few things: -We were no matter WHAT camera you use, don't get hung up on quality. It's more important to get good audio (just as a general filmmaker fact) -Due to compression utilizing long lenses, it will give you more "Bokeh" or "blurry background" to match a larger sensor size such as a red. That's why we suggest using long lenses with the GH4 for the close ups, and Wide with the Red. A wide shot on GH4 will look particularly worst on a wide shot then a RED. It's just how to maximize the smaller sensor size. -For interesting props, it's again to help fill the background and enhance that "blurry" full look. Especially shooting on a wide open aperture on the GH4, it'll fill the background more. If your shooting against a wall, it'll look a lot more "flat" on the GH4 then Red. We do always think make a compelling, riveting story is the best choice, but no that's not what we're saying. It's if you have a GH4, and you want to match the look of bigger sensor cameras, these are a few tips. Does these explain our thought process? Thanks for taking the time to watch, and provide feedback!
@andrewbland6257 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the reply. Yes, I understand your thought process, but it still seems that these techniques are work-arounds to deal with the GH4's inferiority compared to the Red.

"increase compression" I would have to say personally you shouldn't go over 60mm really. The human eye sees about 40mm compression, while the field of view of 23mm. So I say don't go too much over, as it is un- natural.

Well, cameras like The A7S & A7SII are both far superior at low light than the gh4. However the Red is not good at low light at all so the GH4 is even better. Additionally the metabones adapter opens the lens up additional stops allowing more light in.

This just told me how to shoot decent video on a GH4, the closest thing about how to emulate the RED look was the V-Log tip.

+DysnomiaFilms Awesome! Excited to see what you can do with it.

+Lixi Studios what I'm saying is that the content doesn't really do much for the title apart from saying to get V-log to get closer to the dynamic range. If you need more shallow depth of field, get a lens with a wider aperture. I doubt everyone who wants t heir gh4 video to have shallow depth of field wants to shoot everything in telephoto closeup. The things that really differentiate a camera like the red epic from a gh4 are compression, colour depth, grading, noise profile, detail etc. which are all not addressed here. I just think the whole concept surrounding the tips here, which are decent enough on their own, is highly misleading.
@LixiStudios8 жыл бұрын
+DysnomiaFilms Very valid feedback. Never mean to be misleading - apologize about that. For depth of field, we did recommend the metabones (which helps open up the lens) and separation of the background which does help. You are totally right about the telephoto lens on the field, but it is a tool that can come in handy at certain times. Thank you SO much for the feedback! Please always let us know what you think or if you ever have ideas :) it's extremely valuable.

Yeah. V-log smashed down with internal codec doing 4:2:0 in 8bit. Good luck with that. They have no clue what they are talking about.

Around our area we have Yuri Palma, a real Master in GH4 usage ( he even found new techniques). He says, and show why, Vlog is not a choice in case of no external record. Mainly, due to color grade post. Without a deep color grade, Vlog can be used in certain conditions vs Cinelike D, but Palma ( see his works, outstandings. Rome in 4K and Moiton Vol. 4. Out of this planet...) like to do huge color grade, and with Vlog he says that raise too many artefacts

Getting good audio is as important as getting good video, don't BULLSHIT people into thinking otherwise, also camera and lens do matter ALOT, you don't need better audio than video, just both correctly. Getting good audio is not a factor to match RED footage that's why the audio and camera department are SEPARATED. The GH4 is decent micro 4/3 camera but 6K is way cleaner in low light than whatever the GH4 does even if it can get higher iso.
@LixiStudios7 жыл бұрын
Hi Thomas! Thanks for the thoughtful response and discussion. Though we respectfully disagree with you: -As far as low light sensitivity the RED is pretty horrible. Even at 6K the image becomes degraded very quickly. If it's a low light situation, the GH4 does hold up better at higher ISO's (To a point of course). -As far as 'camera and lens matter a lot,' that's a difficult subject to tackle. We standby our thought that people get too hyped from the latest and greatest cameras. You'd be shocked at how many times we've cut together footage from the RX100 V with a RED and nobody can tell. Not saying great tools can't help you, but shooting at 6K doesn't make a story successful or not. It just doesn't. Cameras today are all so amazing for very low price, it's not worth it to spend your budget on more than you can afford. Audio however, can make the experience so far superior for the viewer. I'd much, much prefer good audio and an iPhone camera, then a RED with no audio. Thank you again though for providing thoughtful feedback! It really is much appreciated.

I feel like the title was kind of clickbaity since you didn't really show us how to make the GH4 look like the RED Epic or you didn't go in depth with any of the explanations which should've been a must, but I was still entertained by the video. But next time do go in depth with your stuff otherwise none of the tips really matter.

The notion that shallow focus is inherently cinematic bugs the ever-living shit outta me, some of the most cinematic shots and beloved movies and well-known directors made constant and vivid use of deep focus camera work...
@LixiStudios8 жыл бұрын
+2wenty4frames You are right, that is not inherently cinematic. Just as some locked off camera work, where inside the frame actors are moving around, are some of the most dynamic scenes. But it is nice as a tool to have - when needed - to replicate that shallow look.

Obviously, there is HUGE price difference between the RED and the GH4 BUT the GH4 IS definately usable. That being said, how about comparing the Red to an APS-C OR FUll-Frame "Sony "A" series camera?. The Red is also built to withstand everyday, ALL DAY use and abuse. The GH4 has got a gasket that keeps the rain out. From what I've seen, the MUCH cheaper Lumix G7 actually can beat the 4 times as expensive GH4 in ALOT of categroies if all you need is a lite-weight camera "once in awhile". I hear there are some consistency problems over time with the G7 in 4k however BUT for less than 500 hux, I mean, it works.
@LixiStudios7 жыл бұрын
Bryan Keller All great points! We did this comparison a while back so that was when the GH4 was pretty popular. As for other cameras, it's an amazing time to be a filmmaker. Really it's only when you pushing these cameras really hard (Lots of dynamic range, slow motion, etc.) that you notice the difference.

People need to take a giant step back when it comes to this "LOW LIGHT" filming business. Were talking digital video here not film. With that said, even film has its limitations as does the human eye. No light = No image, period. I am baffled at what it is with this topic. What exactly is it that people need to film in darkness? WHY?? Unless you're into surveillance, There is no point. Somewhere along the line this has become a phenomenal obsession that has gone off the rails. Say we finally do one day have the availability of a consumer or pro-sumer camera that can film a perfect noiseless image in a situation with low to no light. I bet the bank that people will then start to bitch about why we cant see through objects. The fact of the matter is this, one needs to light properly with post in mind. No one wants to look at something they cant see let alone film something that might as well not even be there. The film "Nosferatu" was filmed with a camera and a film stock that needed extreme exposures in normal conditions under lights that actually burned peoples skin. The jumpy look of the film was because people had to move slowly in order to be properly exposed whilst the camera operator slowly hand cranked the camera to the beat of a slow opera song. Yet, the movie portrays darkness better than any film to date with the exception of the opening scene of David Finchers ZODIAC, which BTW is hot with light but one never notices. Anyway, while most everyone here are stuck in place chasing a dragon, I got a fuckin movie to make.
@andrewmccarty4 жыл бұрын
Actually I think people are more concerned with being able to get usable footage in situations that are difficult to light or when you have no control over the light (i.e. weddings, documentary, guerilla style filmmaking, etc.) Especially for those with ultra low budget who can't rent an HMI or something lol.
