8115 Iron Ranger "Copper Rough and Tough" Review.
Thanks for tuning in guys. Boots are going to be showcased in this video as opposed to the usual sneakers. I'm trying to branch out into a more lifestyle and fashion oriented channel as opposed to a purely "sneakerguy" channel.
I hope you enjoyed the video. Stay tuned for more to come!

Do not follow his advice about not oiling leather boots. It's true they are well oiled out of the box...as all leather boots are. But over time the leather will dry out.
@HipposHateWater
@HipposHateWater 4 жыл бұрын
You're supposed to condition your leather footwear with a proper leather conditioner instead of oil. They both do the job, but oil can trap moisture inside and promote dry-rot whereas leather conditioner does not.

I grew up logging and collecting firewood with my dad and have a lot of experience wearing boots. All grown up now, I work in an office about 50% of the time and still like wearing boots. I bought these boots 5 days ago because they look nice and will hold up for many years. When I am not in the office I am walking the ramp looking at airplanes and meandering around hangars on the airport. Days two and three I wore these for 4 hours each day. Day four I wore these for 10 hours in and out of the office and they were not terribly uncomfortable. Day 5 I wore them for 10 hours and feel the leather just barely starting to break in. In my opinion, these boots are a great compromise between a full blown boot for demanding physical conditions, (e.g., construction, concrete, etc..) and a nice office shoe that has function. They are not waterproof or insulated so that should tell a lot.

If you don't want the leather to crack, it's a good idea to condition the leather once in a while. Red wing recommends once a month, and will even do it for free on the spot if you bring them to one of their stores.

Why are people calling into question his job and whether or not he does "real" work in those boots. These are non-insulated, non-waterproof, boots with zero traction on bottom, these are not intended to be "real" work boots. They are dress shoes that go above the ankle suited for nothing more strenuous than an indoor job.

I have had 6 pairs of Danner's over 30 years. Always worn outside and I have to say that that I stepped into my drainage ditch and found a really soft spot. almost like quick sand, about 12 inches deep. Got myself out, took off and dried the boots after washing them out and cleaning the outside. Two days later gave them a good coat of mink oil and they looked great for the next five years. What they look like is often more related to how you care for them than the use. My brother can best be described as a professional hiker, having hiked on all continents, the Australian outback etc. His boots always looked like he was going to church so I asked him. Smooth soles for level surfaces, lugged soles for off trail. A good brushing everyday and mink oil once a week. His idea of fun is a twenty mile hike (he's 82) on a rough trail. Just one observation.

For the people complaining about his advice regarding the lack of oil you need to understand that iron rangers come in a variety of leathers that requires varying care. I personally have the 8085 “ copper rough and tough “ boots and they have significantly more oil than other leather types. Six months into having them my boots are still un very good condition

Top tip for lace-up shoe and boot wearers : Learn to tie a proper bow knot , which should look completely symetrical , with the ends projecting side to side instead of up to down. It will look and feel better and they will not come undone. Like the dif between proper reef knot which looks right and stays put and a granny knot which does neither.

If you do finish work in high end remodeling the last thing you want is to track ANY dirt into a residence. You have inside and outside boots. Smooth soles let you clean the bottoms of the boot if you step into something inside the house that your people or a pet left and didn't clean up. Ate the bill for a professional cleaning of a Persian carpet because of a whoops incident.

Great concise review. They look great for a year old. The creasing seems not be too bad. I've seen some crease so badly. You've never treated them? I have a pair of Chippewas that look almost exactly like that and they're great. I also never treated the whole boot. Just brush and spot treat scratches. Same thing size wise: order .5 down. Fun fact: We're the same exact build. Nice vid.

Thanks! The overall creasing is definitely not that bad at all, I agree. The only treatment I've done is going to my local Red Wing Store and having them do a free oiling on the boots (this was after I made the video). Other than that, these are pretty vanilla.

Not necessarily a work boot but I wore these for several months working a fast paced overnight stocking/truck unloading job. Not recommended as they do hurt your feet after awhile but I did get used to this and they actually began to be comfortable after my 10 hour shifts. Its been about a year for mine as well and they are holding up great, I did lose an eye hook at work after getting it caught pulling some pallets with a jack, but that is about it. Structurally very well made.

Got a pair of these to try them out and sent them back within a week. They are stylish and handsome (and popular) boots but IMO super uncomfortable. They are very narrow with no arch support and the cork soles are worthless. They 'clack' loudly and they get super slick when wet. The toe cap pinches down on the top of your foot and the heel is stiff enough to rub you raw. They mostly fit fine length-wise but they aren't wide enough for the average foot and ee's aren't much better. They say to size down, but I say size up just so you have room for a dr scholls. These are definitely targeted more at the dressier more 'metro' crowd, because they are not good work boots, not even good everyday walking boots really. Strongly suggest you try them on before you spend the $300 plus.

Hey Kyle, Sweet review, so envious of your boots. They look great when they're worn in. I'm highly considering getting a pair of these today or tomorrow, but I have to buy online so I'm having trouble with sizing. My feet seem to be pretty much the same size as yours (Van 9, Nike Roshe 9.5 and Timberland 8W). Are your feet slightly wide? Did you get these in 8.5D or 8.5EE? I have a slightly wider foot and can't decide between 8EE, 8.5EE or 8.5D. Thanks heaps

@KyleTam 7 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed the review. Yes, you're right - my sizing is 9 Vans, 9 Converse, and 9.5 for most Nike shoes. I definitely do have a wider feet than most and I found that the 8.5D Fit me really well. I would not size down all the way to an 8 even though its an EE - it just wouldn't fit the length of your foot even if it gets the width. Your best bet would be to order from a website than does free shipping and returns with no hassle that way you can order both the 8.5D and EE and see which ones you like better. Hope that helped!

Okay great, thank you for the fast reply. I can understand that about the length of the foot, my toes are almost touching the end of my 8W Timberlands. I think the 8.5D will be the right fit, but I'll get both just to be sure. Being a 'work boot' do you find that you'd just wear these to work? Or out on all occasions. I'm 24 and looking for a stylish boot that can do everything without feeling/looking too big and too much like specifically a work boot. Thank you, you've really helped!

Glad I could help! I'm 20 years old right now so I don't have a full time job yet - I'm still in college working on my degree. I mainly purchased these boots because I read a lot of good reviews about them and where I come from, the winters are hit or miss so I wanted to be prepared and these have done the job. These are definitely stylish. They don't fit the traditional mold of work shoes with the stigma of looking too bulky or having more function than form. These hit a sweet spot that has both. I would definitely wear these to work and also out and about in the town.

did the leather darken on it's own? or did clean and conditioning do that? I look at the Amber and the Redwing shopkeeper said the Amber would eventually start to look like the Copper Rough and Tough. Not sure about that, but i thought I'd ask you about how the boot got dark.
@KyleTam
@KyleTam 7 жыл бұрын
The leather gets darker on it's own. Exposure to sun wears down the leather so does just everyday wear and tear. Not to mention I also wear dark jeans and the indigo from that can also transfer over onto the leather and give it a more darker appearance towards the opening rim. Right off the bat the amber harness is definitely darker than the copper which is what I have. They both darken over time but if anything, the copper ages to the color of the amber and the amber ages darker than that. Hope that helped!

@KyleTam
@KyleTam 7 жыл бұрын
Yes, in theory, as long as you got the same leather as mine they should show the same wear over time. Of course a lot of things can affect this such as how you use your particular boots and the weather in the place you live. I hope that helped!

Best looking pair of boots in the internets man! You mentioned you buffed them once a while, what did you use to buff? This color combo you achieved is so versatile and unique. I was trying to make up my mind but now def getting the copper. Many thanks for sharing!
@KyleTam
@KyleTam 6 жыл бұрын
I'm glad it helped! From time to time, I would just use a horsehair shoe brush and buff out the shoe with elbow grease. I took it to my local Red Wing Store and they do FREE boot oiling - just gotta take it to them and they'll take care of it using RW boot oil.

The Black Harness were my first IR and they still look good 4 years later. I think the Black Harness was much easier to break in than my Amber Harness because the leather is much softer.

The initial week was kinda brutal because they're pretty stiff leather so it takes a while to break in but once you do it feels like wearing a pair of sneakers to me! I wore them on an 8 hour shift at my job and had no complains or blisters lmao.

You have got to be kidding me. One time you wore them on an 8 hour shift? you cant go into detail? You're not someone who should be reviewing a work boot if you just work in a deli. No offense man, but give some background information. Also, yes they need oil, especially if your doing hard work.

I'm sick of wearing sneakers. I have had many pairs of work boots. Keens, wolverines, thorogoods, redwings. They all fell apart due to the chemicals we walk through at my work. I'm getting these for everyday boots. So take the sneakers I wear everyday for everything. Shopping hiking yard work. And replacing them with these boots. It's going to be wonderful. Until winter comes around. I have Columbia snow boots for winter. They are the best. So for all of you arguing about work boots. I'm going to just have everyday boots. Leave my cheap Walmart boots for real work. Because in 6 months they will be shot. Good story grandpa!!!!

hey Kyle. Thanks for the video. How much room do you have between the end of the boot and your big toe? half inch, Inch?
@KyleTam
@KyleTam 8 жыл бұрын
It's a pretty bulbous toebox so i'd say I have half an inch from the end and big toe. Like I said, I sized down .5 from my true to size and I since it's leather, it fits perfect now. I'm glad you enjoyed the video!

Definitely don't skimp on a good pair of quality boots. These Red Wings are definitely a buy it for life item if you treat them right. As for the Chicago winters, I'm sure they can handle mild winters but if you want to be walking in snow a lot you might want to get it resoled to something with more traction

@KyleTam
@KyleTam 7 жыл бұрын
I actually don't wear white socks too much. I typically stay with grey, navy and black wool socks. However, I can't really say if the leather will bleed any onto your socks. I imagine it will a little, but nothing that a simple wash and bleach can't take care of.
@piotrwydmuch9413
@piotrwydmuch9413 7 жыл бұрын
yes they do that, i have iron rangers in amber harness for nearly 3 weeks now and when i use them for work (many hours straight), the bottom of my socks is properly brown( and it is quite hard to wash off, even in 60degrees Celsius wash). I did contact the Red Wing and asked about this, and apparently this is quite normal as they use a lot of dyes etc, so when the boot gets wet it will be releasing onto the socks! They recommended either trying to wipe off the insole with a little bit of alcohol as it might limit the transfer onto the socks a bit, or simply using an additional insoles inside the boot. They did say that it will lessen over time and i'm happy with that. I love these boots so much that i can put up with this for sure. Best boots i've ever had!
