Beautiful red wolf M1803 (a.k.a. Moose) represents the Wolf Conservation Center's active participation to save a species from the brink of extinction.
The Wolf Conservation Center (WCC), is a 501c3 non-profit organization in South Salem, NY. These red wolves represent the WCC's active participation to save a species from the brink of extinction.
The WCC is one of a network of facilities participating in the Red Wolf Species Survival Plan - a national initiative whose primary purpose is to support the reestablishment of red wolves in the wild through captive breeding, public education, and research.
The red wolf is one of the world’s most endangered wild canids. Once common throughout the southeastern United States, red wolf populations were decimated by the 1960s due to intensive predator control programs and loss of habitat. A remnant population of red wolves was found along the Gulf coast of Texas and Louisiana. After being declared an endangered species in 1973, efforts were initiated to locate and capture as many wild red wolves as possible. Of the 17 remaining wolves captured by biologists, 14 became the founders of a successful captive breeding program. Consequently, the United States Fish and Wildlife Service declared red wolves extinct in the wild in 1980.
By 1987, enough red wolves were bred in captivity to begin a restoration program on Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge in northeastern North Carolina.
The wild population peaked at an estimated 130 wolves in 2006 and remained above 100 for several years. Data shows 15 or more wolves have died in each of the past 3 years from a variety of reasons including gunshot. It’s generally illegal to kill endangered animals. Unfortunately, in 2014 when USFWS halted all key management activity including captive-to-wild releases, the wild red wolf population plummeted to its lowest level in decades. Current estimates put the wild population at just 45 today - the lowest level since the late 1990s.

Red wolves seem to be lankier and less bulky than gray wolves, but their howl is just as beautiful as that of their bigger counterparts!

Yes. More related to a coyote than a gray wolf. Majestic AF.

They're adapted to the original SE US forests, where whitetail and smaller animals are more prevalent than are moose, elk, bison and other ancient members of the animal community with the wolf. elk, which in much of the world are the preferred wolf prey (even in the extinct British Isles and Ireland), are beings of early and mid-successional habitat. eastern forests were once more hardwood, with less forest fires and consequent open habitat. Wolves are also grassland predators, and grasslands once existed from Mongolia through Poland, with horses and caprinidae (goat relatives including types of antelope). the wolf is a coursing predator - a runner, and for example, the woodland caribou once thriving in British Columbia and in forests of Minnesota and Ontario, had less exposure to the wolf, and so were less adapted. Like the moose, whose long legs glide over fallen logs and forest understory (the moose cannot tolerate temperatures in the 70s, and so is not endemic to warm climes) a chasing predator can't function well, unless it is smaller, like the smaller mammals of the southeast. genomics tells us that the Coyote was closest to the progenitor of wolves, who did best in cold periods, being larger. See Bergmann's Rule about this. wolves traveled over the Bering land bridge several times in glacial periods, following the arctic megafauna. there's more to say on "bulk", but this should start the interested off.

That’s because the red wolf is a smaller and thinner cousin to the grey wolf ( canis lupus) its sad because the are endangered and only 40 of them left I. The wild

@@olyviacielo what besides the obvious is the difference between the red wolf and the coyote? I'm from the gulf coast and have had many friends surrounded by what they said where coyotes after the deer kill they were packing thru the woods. But, when did coyotes hunt, circle, and act like wolves? I've heard ppl call them coy wolves. Is this the same animal as the red wolf. And, I thought the red wolf was more in the desert. thanks

I really hope that, in my lifetime, they are reintroduced to a majority of they former range, both to better the environment, help control deer populations, and, if possible, create hunting opportunity. I would love to be able to relive the experiences and thrills of the red wolf hunters of the South, although in a much more controlled, and sustainable, way.

Wolf conservation center refused to take this comment by me, so I post it here : I don't know how well suited the Louisiana/ Arkansas, east Texas area where the last wild ones were captured for breeding and release in NC,. they were taken in the early 70s. There is a severe problem in Red Wolf country - too much of it has been designated "private" property. The present administration and many greedy euroamericans are attempting to reduce public lands in the West as well. But to identify just one of the many practical reasons why Red Wolves are desperately needed back there in the Southeast: Without wolves to keep deer in motion and patchy occupation (ungulates in full nature move through the borders of wolf family territories, rather than spread and act domestic where no wolves live) some terrible "crowd"diseases have emerged. Chief among them now, if CWD, which has been traced to deer/elk "game" farms which raised them in confined spaces, and shipped them as far as Alberta and Saskatchewan along with Colorado and elsewhere to be shot by "hunters" who pay to kill on private "game ranches". CWD is a malformed cell protein that somehow flips similar proteins into unusable forms, killing the cell. The dead cells and proteins are shed for a long time before we can detect any illness in the deer. (for those familiar with apoptosis, the situation is more clear) Those proteins persist in soils, and are picked up on growing plants, etc. Wolves can detect even slight illness and weakness in elk and deer, and will take them, and digest their proteins. they also eat a LOT of carrion. This means that the disease is prevented from shedding and proliferating. Humans CANNOT detect subclinical disease, and hunters prefer the biggest and healthiest, and often are constrained by law to only shoot males. So we ourselves act to PROMOTE CWD, instead of helping the ungulates by removing it. Red Wolves once thrived in the area where heartworm was endemic, and I believe it's HIGHLY probable they have genetic resistance that other wolves don't have. So, from Tennessee to Virginia, East Texas to Georgia or even Florida, Red Wolves are essential. They are not merely some gift that we would or should give, but vital to all the life and all nature itself. We prevent life, killing it, by preventing the return of the Red Wolf.
