The Tooze murders really shook our village. I was 12 at the time and my grandfather knew Harry Tooze fairly well as he used to be a farmer and having a violent gun death in our village was something that had never happened before. I still think it was the daughters boyfriend as he was the only person who actually had a motive and he lied multiple times in his alibi but because of no physical evidence linking him to the scene he was released on appeal after he was convicted. Thanks for this trip down memory lane, loved seeing the village as it was in 93

After doing some further research into the Tooze murders, I'm wondering about a crucial detail that hasn't been mentioned in any source. One article says the murder weapon was never found so if Cooper did it then he would take his own weapon but Harry Tooze was a farmer and had access to a gun. Did the police check if the gun(s) were missing from the property? If they were then that obviously means he was murdered by his own gun which could mean that they had the right man all along- he did have motive after all. Also no mention of there being any signs of a struggle so either they knew their killer (son-in-law) or the killer was already in the house and they disturbed him (Cooper.) Cooper's MO was robbery and there is no mention of whether anything was stolen and the bodies were hidden under the hay bales, whereas Cooper usually tied his victims up. Hiding bodies is an action normally carried out by someone who has a close connection to the victims, they cover the faces so that victims can't 'see' what they are doing. This is a baffling one because it does fit what Cooper did in his other crimes but there are also things that point away from him and towards someone known to the couple

Additionally, 3 separate eye witnesses, including the carpenter that was face to face and chased him for so long, picked another man out of a lineup named Francis Marnell. But a judge dropped the case as some other witnesses (who hadn't had as close contact) didnt pick him out. He had mental health issues, including psychosis, and admitted to police that he may have done it and just couldnt remember.

Just as with the overalls/dungarees, they exist for a very important reason in each case (functionally speaking). Whoever taught you to become a painter and decorator, failed to convey this to you by the sounds of things. A bus driver too is supposed to wear a uniform and a hat for a *reason...* the absence of something doesn't necessarily mean the freedom from the reasoning behind it.

I agree. I think he along with many other farmers just get too trigger happy, a sense of power over just shooting anything that moves. He needs to realise other creatures have to eat too. I guess he realised too late that it's not a very nice experience to be shot at. L

Good insight into how grey and grim the early 90s were in the UK. So much of the Industrial dereliction of the 80s still around, together with the early 90s property crash. Like the early and mid 80s, it was a desolate era in lots of ways.
