My head cannon is that this guy was just a lowly private who went insane after eating too many wild berries, stole some random senior officer’s uniform (and whatever other seemingly fancy clothes he could find), ran off and started calling himself colonel, and kidnapped a couple continental army soldiers in order to live out his sexual torture fantasies he didn’t know he was into until now. Sidenote: I just had the image pop up in my head of some poor senior officer waking up to find his uniform stolen and being forced to lead his troops in his nightgown. I have yet to stop laughing.

As someone who's into SOME asmr content as well as being a fan of this channel and its subject matter, I feel uniquely able to comment on this. To be clear, I'm into the more guided meditation side of ASMR as it's sort of a spectrum and there's a lot of different sorts of asmr, from roleplays like this, to "trigger videos," guided meditations, personal attention, and more. Asmr is undoubtedly a very weird category and I understand not understanding it, though I'd ask that your position as an outsider be simply that it's not for you. Like any category, there's good content and bad, there's genuinely wholesome content that changes people's lives for the better, and there's also shameless cash grabs. Some videos are just clickbait or suggestive content, but other videos help me handle depression and anxiety or help change my perspective on how I see the world. Many asmr channels use suggestive themes as one element for the audience but don't make that the whole theme and that's how I see this video. To be fair, I'm not attracted to men in the slightest (with the obvious exception of Ewan McGregor), so I have difficulty telling when he's playing that up for the camera. There's certainly an element of that, and he's surely aware of that and panders to it, but I think to say that's all the video is intended for is perhaps misleading. Of course it's not accurate and of course you didn't expect it to be, this is yet another in this guy's long line of roleplay videos and he isn't going to sink a ton of resources in to getting it right. That said, with a little time, care, research, and effort, he could have made a more accurate, immersive, and interesting video which could have had something interesting to say, whether that's a mini teaching moment or a more interesting comment on the politics of the time, perhaps with a nod to how that affects us today. I do think this video is yet another in a long line of pieces of media which is a product of perceptions of the American Revolutionary war, and it serves to show how poorly the public has been informed on an international scale about the conflict, as well as showing how important history and historiography are. While I would argue the conflict and our perceptions of it don't matter much today, I believe it's our duty to those who've fought and died for any cause to teach about that cause accurately, showing why it may have been just or not, and the many facets of those who fought on either side of a conflict. History is one part science (what happened and how), and one part contextualizing, where we learn from the mistakes and successes of the past to guide us to a better tomorrow. History shapes ideology, and ideology shapes the future. If that "history" is a lie or misleading, it can inform bad ideologies which then make our future worse.

Well given it’s not called “lobsterback ASMR“ I think I already see the problem. Edit: or whatever the lobsterback’s called themselves. Edit 2: Brandon mentioned in another video that the Lobsterback nickname was invented later. Edit 3: Apparently it came around during the War of 1812 iirc.

"...And you know what? That so-called 'plumber's' so-called 'tool box' seems to be woefully lacking in the appropriate implements required to 'fix' that- admittedly very winsome- lady's 'pipes'... For one thing that spanner is of completely the wrong gauge... and for another there's simply no realistic reason for him to take his shirt off if we are to believe that the scene we are witnessing takes place in November, as suggested by the seasonal accoutrements shown at the beginning of the scene... and... and... oh my... I'm sure that kind of thing contradicts any number of workplace regulations... and... oh my gosh... and... goodness gracious... and... I feel a bit faint... and... oh my golly gosh..." Seriously- I get this overanalysis was done with humorous intent, and it's pretty funny on its own terms.

2:14 was this an attempt to avoid saying the word "nazi" and risk demonetization or did you not want to acknowledge the existence of BDSM while in the presence of two other men in brightly-colored costumes? EDIT: i can now confirm that brandon f does not even know that BDSM exists, based on his later reactions to the video and its comments

12:25 Asmr is supposed to be relaxing. Check out Downtosleep who did a good job relaxing people by reading stories. This redcoat asmr was cringe, unnerving, and didn't do a good job. 12:53 19:03 Yeah, it's disturbing that some people glorify abusive relationships. There videos criticizing the glorification of abusive relationships in entertainment. There's fan art glorifying it too. It's hard to avoid negative fan art when looking up fan art. I wouldn't want those harassing comments. 31:10 We don't know that asmr yt-er's intent, but if someone makes asmr or something relaxing about torture then he's probably glorifying abuse. It's disturbing that someone made a asmr that seemed to glorify abuse or seemed to be ok with that reception from the comments on his video. I didn't think it was s3xual to me, but it was cringe and unnerving. I just wanted the asmr video to be over. Only hearing you guys criticize it is when I could get through it. Otherwise, I wouldn't watch that asmr. I mostly watched it to hear your critique and info, and was curious how bad it could be. And it is terrible. Would people think asmr glorifying slavery is ok? 26:37 No, he could've done research on the internet or library even if he doesn't have much money. He has internet if he uploads to yt. With all his trinkets, I don't think he's that poor. But many people don't care about historical accuracy. I do tho. 27:52 Yeah, I've notice a lot of historical games have modern cuss words in them, and I haven't seen people called it out except you, even tho some people claim to be for accuracy. It's ridiculous, and I think some people are biased and just like those modern cuss words. I thought his voice sounded too hoarse, and it was hard to understand what he was saying.

People receive it differently. Some may find the sound of rain relaxing, others the crunching of leafs, third from the noise of densely populated are. And since people would want to listen to something suitable for their mood (be it to relax, get unnerved or sехtuаllу relieve themselves), there's different ASMR videos/sound recordings for that. In this case, the video is likely posted for people to get turned on and do the deed while listening to it, and since ASMR is usually auditory, they did a very poor job of making it visually appealing. As for the moral question of weather or not it's right or wrong, it very much depends on who you ask. Is it glorifying torture? Yes. Is it therefore deserving to be taken down? Depends. Is it encouraging others to go commit or surrender themselves to do it? No. Therefore, in my opinion, it's not to be taken down. To me, this is another case of a product criticized by the audience it was not intended for. You don't like it? Then don't consume it nor interact with it. Simple as that.

Les 120 Journes de Sodome was 1785, so JUST missed it. However, there was Fanny Hill in 1749 and Fashionable Lectures in 1750, both of which had bondage and whipping. Fairly basic if I understand correctly, but I could imagine some officers having copies while pretending not to have them. (Fanny Hill was officially banned and official publishing was shut down by the government, but was kept in circulation through piracy)

I'm only halfway through the video and have only one question: this "colonel" is supposed to intimidate me, the viewer ?! His posture is bent, he does not dare to look me in the eye and mumbles quietly and incomprehensibly to himself. He blinks insecurely when he looks me in the eyes and constantly makes evasive gestures to keep his hands busy, which gives me the impression that he is deeply tempted to distract himself. In short, it seems to me rather that he is about to be quizzed and not me, as a spectator. O.o
