Did this Victoria Cross Hero Fake His Own Death? Captain Cecil D’Arcy VC -Zulu War

Many VC winners have struggled to cope with their sudden fame and our hero today is one of them.
He rose through the ranks to command one of the most famous units of the South African Frontier.
He won a VC fighting the Zulus, served with distinction against the Basothos and then mysteriously disappeared.
Today’s story is about an incredible man - but one who remains an enigma.
A special thanks to my friend Cam Simpson who researched and co-wrote this epsiode. His books can be found here - amzn.to/3TmTXGt

When I was 12 I was paperboy to Lewisham Hospital wards SE London. There was a patient who had a VC next to his bed, never asked him his name or what he did, should have but I was young. Went in one day and he'd passed away, I'm now 60. That man has stayed with me knowing he'd done something extraordinary to merit a VC. At the age of 12 I was in awe of him and still am.

I wish I'd had the confidence I have now to have talked and listened to the WWII veterans I met as a kid in the 1970s and '80s. Like you, I was in awe of these men. After serving in the SADF, I have an inkling of their life and struggles.

@@robert-trading-as-Bob69 I did, all my friends had dads who fought in WW2 including my own dad. Some including my dad fought in Europe and a few in Asia. Some of the weapons they bought back were great. We had a history teacher as well as the deputy head who had fought in the war and one day in a lesson he asked us to bring in any weapons that our dads had bought home. The whole class including the girls bought something in 33 items on display from just one class. Mine was a luger that my dad had taken off a young German boy soldier who had tried to kill him as they pushed into Germany at 14 years of age. My friend Peter Williams brought in his dad's Samurai sword. You have to remember that this was in the early 60s so the war was so raw in people's minds, everyone had stories to tell and I decided many years later to write about what my dad had told me and my brother

I have hiked most of the Drakensberg, including Mohaleshoek, and I wish I'd known there had been a battle in the area. The Basuto ponies were renowned for their hardiness and endurance. The Boers, like Denys Reitz, liked them immensely. Denys Reitz mentions them in his book, Commando.

I remember watching a documentary on the Rorke's Drift. It ended describing how some of the survivors exhibited what is now termed ptsd. Maybe it was the failure to save Raubenheim(?) coupled with people questioning whether he deserved a VC for it.

What Captain D'Arcy did took guts, and not just the rescue attempt, but all of the actions in his battles. I have read that in the 19th century what we know as PTSD today was called "Soldiers Heart". That may have been his end. Excellent story, and very well presented. Thank you! Regards from Canada 🇨🇦

@@keithagn You're correct, "soldier's heart" was mostly used in the US to describe the condition among veterans of the Civil War. Not sure if it ever made its way overseas. Unfortunately, I'm unfamiliar with whether it was seen as a general malady to be treated, or a personal failing to keep up one's courage.

I understand the commendable wish to involve the younger generation. But surely this is done by your passion and enthusiasm for the subject, as you do well. Not dumbing it down a level to suit youngsters, they should be encouraged to step uo a level. That said, its good to try out new things, see what works and what don't. Use the words you wish to use.
