Artillery 101! Here's my detailed and easy to follow guide explaining how to operate any artillery in the ww2 fps game Hell Let Loose (PC). If you're new to the game or just want to brush up on your artillery skills then I'd recommend watching the whole video. Todays artillery is way more accurate than you think. The triple 7 with rap rounds and or Excalibur rounds will put that round within 5 meters. And even is smarty enough to land as a dud if it’s outside it’s designated target

Did you see a recent test where we hit a moving target with a 155 round at about 47km on the horizontal plane? We literally guided a 155 into a horizontal path and hit a moving truck sized target at over 40km, modern artillery in magical

Late but some of this comment seems pretty off. Excalibur is probably mostly right although maybe 6m. RAP projectiles however have a listed CEP of 259m at max range using M198 due to lack of terminal guidance. There is a PGK guided version but this has a CEP of 20.9m which is a fair bit less accurate than 5m. The PGK safety dud mode only activates 150m away. It's a useful feature but that's a sizable danger close circle. Your main point that modern artillery is dramatically more accurate than WW2 is of course correct.

100m range difference = 23/24mil elevevation difference, meaning you can adjust in 33 metre increments with 8mil adjustments, 8.25 metres with 2mil adjustments and 4.125 metre increments with 1 mil adjustments Meaning you can come within 1 metre of a 1034m target at 756mil

~12mil per 50m and ~6mil per 25m increment are also useful to remember. 8mil for 33m is handy if you're dividing in thirds, but I think we're more comfortable doing things by halves and quarters, generally. Arty is inaccurate enough that breaking it down to decimal points only adds confusion. May as well just round it off.

I never heard of this game before, but I really appreciate every game that has artillery as player controlled asset. EDIT: since then I decided to actually install it (cause it was on humble monthly at some point) and with friend we were doing some nice crushing fire missions.

This is the closest thing you'll get to milsim other than arma on consoles. It's extremely atmospheric, slow, and chaotic. Definitely worth your time if you're open to learning a lot through dying lol

Another trick for artillery: If you annoy the enemy team enough, you can usually park the transport/supply truck at angles in front of the gun you're on to further impede snipers from harassing you. If someone needs to use them, no big deal - they'll respawn eventually and maybe you could move a tank to fill in the spot instead.

@Jews are bad 🇫🇮 Most teams only have 2 to 3 tank squads. Considering you can have up to 6 tank squads, a single squad on arty is quite a small price to pay.

When the enemy recon assigns one of two squads do keep you silent. Then youve done it right :)

Having a recon unit pin down the enemy artillery is always a solid strategy. That is my main objective when playing recon.

TIP: as an arty u should create your own unit and lock it, designate your unit as arty in the menu. As an officer you can place an outpost, do that in order to alert you if enemy recon are around (you will see the outpost getting red exclamation mark on the map when enemies are near ) If you disassemble your outpost, you don't have to wait for the cooldown to place a new one.

It was no guessing game for Artillery for a hundred+ years, the Fire Direction Center gets info from the Forward Observers, translates and sends the information to the guns which dial in and fire with pin point accuracy. The whole process takes seconds, the longest wait is for the rounds to drop. So technically in game we are usually doing all three of those jobs at once: identifying the target, finding it on the map, and swinging the guns in the right direction and angle to fire a desired number of shells, by type, and pattern. If you have a spotter, awesome but you are still left with two jobs, so I don't think using the Arty calculator is all that bad lol. I was an FO in the US Army, only reason I know all that, hahaha.

Knew how artillery worked but decided to watch and learned about that loading trick. Nice. Also, support roles like artillery and logi are underrated in team-based games. Something about sending some heavy shells down range and getting "Good effect on target." just feels way too good. Great video btw

The reason for the variation (in terms of where the shot lands) is baked into the game. The Devs - in an effort to nerf its effectiveness; not only removed their ability to destroy garrisons, but also added in an RNG effect to where it lands respective to where it's "dialed in". What this means the shots will land 2m-20m from your dialed in target; hence why you may get more friendlies than anticipated, as even 15m-20m can put it on the other side of the house/courtyard you were targeting.

Pretty true to real Artillery, especially of the period and this era of Combined Arms; you hit within a 15-30m box of aim point. This is *planned for* and designed - it is a feature, not a bug! Shells are sent in *barrage,* not individually - if you want Arty to be effective, the target needs to be *saturated.* If the gun fired pinpoint accurate, you'd need to adjust FOS between every round, otherwise you'd just keep hitting the same point over and over.. imperfections in an individual shell or gun, strong wind, even the ground; you can't control any of it and it *all* comes in to play, so you design *for it.* Its not a "targeted" weapon; its a suppression weapon - you want it to hit as many different areas in a box as possible.

Another useful piece for the timing between switching seats; What I do is listen to the end of the chamber closing sound to begin switching seats. For me, it's easier than trying to time it. It may or may not be faster or slower than what's shown here. To put it simply, wait for the tail end of the "closing the chamber" sound to switch.

Best tutorial/breakdown I’ve seen. I was using the calculator before and it would take too long to input numbers and relate that to the game. Knowing that the strikes aren’t pinpoint was good to know as well. Now I’ll pan left or right while adjusting the mil at the same time. Soo much faster. Got 44 kills in about 40mins on Soviet defense. It definitely helped the team with the win

thanks, amazing tutorial and very understandable. once played an full arty match with an random teammate and made 192 kills. we also destroyed a few garry's and other spawn points.

I'll be honest. I don't find artillery in this game to be "game enhancing." Too unrealistic. Too constant. And too accurate. Not to mention the cheaters. Speaking of which, try to not be so obvious that you are cheating. For instance, sometimes, as a squad leader, I park myself in a bush and just use my binos to highlight targets for my squad. I do this way out away from the fight, and on the flank. I sit there and do not fire or do anything to bring attention to myself. Even had people run past me as close as 5 feet away, and not see me. But suddenly, out of nowhere, one single shell lands on me and kills me. Tell me you are cheating without telling me you are cheating. When the game was new, I could sit there the entire game and this not happen. As the cheats came online, I now often can't sit there for more than a few minutes before this happens. Others have noticed this as well. It's like if you stay stationary too long, you become too tempting to the cheater. Another thing I might like to see is a huge penalty for killing team players. Something that increases exponentially the more you kill team members. This would force artillery to work more closely with spotters. This would also force them to not shell the areas that their own team is attacking, especially without more teamwork. It's just my personal preference, but getting killed over and over by artillery simply because the I'm trying to defend a point, and the artillery man isn't that worried about killing his own players 25 feet away from me, isn't game enhancing. The fact that Artillery gets so many kills highlights this point. I prefer there be more balance in the Artillery game. You can watch any real footage from WWII, and artillery was not constantly raining down on every battle. It's way way overdone in HLL. Something needs to be done to balance it. Not remove it. Balance it. Don't give me, "that's what recon is for." I've held off two recon teams by manning one single light tank and placing it near the arty. They were not able to affect the arty at all after that. Also, and this is an HLL Dev problem, being killed the split second you spawn in. Nobody likes that, and this is where SQUAD is superior. Squad gives you a structure to spawn inside of, with multiple ways out. I've spawned into one that was camped, and me and the others fought our way out, using teamwork, smoke, grenades, and lot's of grit. Camping one of those as one person with an MG is not possible. In SQUAD/SQUAD 44, your "outposts" can be placed inside buildings. Works great. Not sure why this game can't make it work.

For the last 2 years, I've had thousands of comments saying "AKSHUALLY IM A US MARINE WITH 5 TOURS IN BALOOBASTAN AND OVER 100 PURPLE HELMETS AND YOU ARE WRONG BECAUSE:" So the fact that you also said the artillery is too accurate is saddening, because now you risk having to read this stuff every day too haha. Another personal thing with solo-using Artillery. I rely more on audio when to switch back to position 1. When you hear the "kha-chunk" sound from slamming the shell chamber close, it's a good spot to start switching positions

I don't play much anymore but I did try to reenact a maneuver I was involved in a long time ago in the actual army. We had mortars walking rounds a few hundred meters in front of us as we crossed a field toward a trench. I tried it in Arma and it would have worked if my clan, which is full of veterans, hadn't been full of veterans.

Or somebody decides to redirect fire to bracketing, if you know what that is. You know, cuz it's fucking hilarious seeing unsuspecting 7-9 man squads get wiped

I was watching this as I tried Arty for the first time on an enemy tank position marker yesterday. And I got the Death from Above achievement from steam lmao! Good stuff! And then I was just shelling areas that are next to the attack list or marked areas for enemy garri and OP. Needless to say they made me stop shelling as they put a whole squad with an OP on my artillery piece...

I remember in Squad, when firing mortars, if you aimed down the scope and fired all 3 rounds the radius of dispersion was very small but when you are looking at the target outside the scope dispersion is insane.

I think most people use an arty calculator anyway lol, that makes arty 500% easier. This guide tries to encourage people to use it in a more conventional way as intended.

As a former Marine cannon cocker, this is awesome. I do wish they called the left/right traverse 'Deflection" though. They were using M107 HE rounds all the way up until around 2012 when they switched to the longer (and heavier...ugh!) M795 HE rounds.

My best advice for learning how to use artillery effectively is to start by playing on Offensive mode on the defending team. Due to the gamemode limitations the enemy recon squads are unable to come and attack the defending artillery until the centre capture point is taken. So you are free to blast away at infantry for 3 zones without any chance of being killed.

This is the first video of yours I’ve watched. I have watched some monoespecial and soulsniper over my 200 hours of gameplay and I love your presentation and explanation, I have played all roles and positions on the map but you do have the best presentation I have seen thus far. I hope to get into HLL content creation myself (on console) and I know I have a long way to go but keep up the great work and much love brother see you on the battlefield

Current mortarman in the US army. Actually our artillery rounds as well as mortar rounds are accurate up to 1 meter if they are hooked up to our MFCS system. And we have another system that re zeros itself after each shot. Pretty much we are able to drop a 120mm round on a 50 gallon drum at 4000 meters if we wanted. A little bit further even

So what i learned from the summary is that i can turn the arty even further in the loader seat. What i like to do when i calculate is to use the mils of course, lets say you got a target at 1340m, 1300m is 701mil and 1400m is 677mil. 24 mils always equal 100 meters so i like to basically use 5 mils as 20 meters, its not spot on since 24÷5 is 4.8 but its close enough. Using that formula i would set the gun to about 691 or 692mil and it should be fairly accurate on 1340 meters. What i also like to do is turn very slightly left or right inbetween shots since you never know in which direction the target might use but then again i dont use arty alot so i could be doing mistakes.

I imagine that 622 mil is the setting for 45 degrees (the maximum horizontal distance a projectile can travel without propulsion). So the increase there is just going beyond 45 degrees, which just shoots the projectile in a big arc going up, then falling down. I think as you get closer to 1000 mil, that would be 0 degrees.... which would shoot the shell straight up and land back on your head. :) I hope this helps.

actually 800 mils is 45 degrees. Entire 360 degrees is 6400 mils.

there's probably some magnus force with the spinning projectile so the idea angle is less than 45

Mil just means milliradian, so 1000 mil is 1 radian. 2π radians is 360 degrees

If we were able to shoot it straight up in the game, you would have 10% chance to receive it directly on your head as it's RNG says 2~20m radius range on a 360 degrees area from the epicentre

Arty tip: wherever your team is, put shells 100-200m ahead of them. Easy kills every time

I jumped into arty for 5 minutes to lob smokes to help push a point - we took the point. Then lobbed 8 explosive shells at the far side to prevent a counter push. Got 20 kills with those 8 shells. My shortest but probably most effective time using artillery.

I'm new to the game, have only 15h, I just played my first match as artillery man, got 15 kills, on shooting at markers as fast as I could. Thare was some friendly fire, but overall it worked, I will follow your advices, to for sharing.

9:02 as someone who did naval artillery there is only 3 load options standard, reduced and clearing. its rare to use anything other than standard and clearing is solely to clear a stuck charge, powder charge levels are not changed but it is in fact elevation of the gun that changes for closer or farther. granted i cant speak for other branches or other nations artillery.

Fantastic tutorial, I have almost 500 hours on HLL and have never used arty. I'm certainly going to try it now. One thing though, at 17:15 you say "a shell every 24-25 seconds". But it's actually one shell every 7-8 seconds.

Good luck. you will be camped within 10 minutes of the start by recon with spawn points all around your arty making it unusable.

@@jamesyak52 set up ops in advance so you’re not spawning directly on the spawn camper I know the frustration also keep checking map around you if you are the only one there and start hearing multiple footsteps grenades nearby explosions best bet is to jump off the gun ASAP check for movement even if it is teammate you didn’t see it’s saved me countless times plus if you follow my first tip in best case scenario you know where you got shot from don’t push directly back to them make wide sweep around look for ops making your way back honestly it’s very fun defending the arty because you know it’s time sensitive you could be changing outcome of the game it forces you to push and hunt down that enemy squad and the satisfaction of taking your guns back and knowing you diverted squads to fight you that aren’t on the obj is priceless they wouldn’t be doing it if you weren’t doing a good job

What i do at the start of a round is letting all the SLs on my team know that i will always fire 2 rounds of HE followed by 1 smoke. So whenever they request a firing mission they know that they get some damage and utility sent down range

Arty is so under used in HLL. When its used properly its devistating but many commanders either forget to use or dismiss it all together.

The problem is that it's such an expensive drain on resources that the commander usually tells people to get off the guns unless you really show that you're an asset to the team using it, which unfortunately most people aren't because they don't communicate, coordinate or avoid friendly fire lol.

Getting team killed while on artillery usually means one of the shells you just fired landed square on a friendly's head and they took it personally lol. Watch your aim, remember not to fire too close to where friendlies are (and could move to before the shells arrive), mark your barrages on the map (why it's important to do it as a squad leader and not a regular joe), and call out all barrages in command chat before firing to give them a fighting chance.

When I was in the Canadian Armed Forces I was in light armoured reconnaissance. One of our jobs was being the artillery spotters. Using a map with a grid that was designed to give coordinates ranging from 1,000 metres to 1 metre, we would radio back a set of coordinates. They would fire one shot and we'd watch where it landed. If it was too far off, we could tell them to correct X number of metres in which direction, then fire to check. One they were on target, we'd send in our request. Something like "give me figures five hotel echo and figures two whiskey papa, fire for effect". Then 5 HE and 2 WP shells would arrive and the problem went away!

There's a lot wrong with the function and animations but this is still the best depiction of artillery in any FPS game I've ever seen. They kinda have to break it down Barney style for the players since very few of them will have any real experience.

Step 1. Get a microphone Step 2. Get a sqaud leader that talks and gives you marks. Step 3. Keep an eye on the changes happening in the map. Step 4. Keep an eye on munitions total. Stop once below 500 imo. Step 5. If command says stop, you stop. 99% of players cant do the above. Do that and youll automaticly be top 1%

looking at the scale it appears that every 100m is ~24 MIL (23 and change), so couldn't you just pick the closest known value, and do 0.24 * the difference between the known value and the actual distance to find the MIL adjustment? Or for some Canadian Windage, a quarter of the difference is your MIL offset...

Good tutorial; I've been running arty for a while. Using the calculator I've gotten up to 124 kills in a match. A good commander making good marks helps a ton.

Dont want to say your wrong, but today's artillery can land within 5 meters of a target. I only know this because of someone I know that's in an artillery reg. And the blast radius is much larger than 5m, so it's pretty much pinpoint lol. Thanks for the good guide! Looking forward to kicking ass then getting sniped when people get annoyed lol

If you want to be more accurate without using external programs. You can do a simple calculator problem to quickly get results. the Mil difference between each 100M is roughly 23-24 every time. This means you can take 23.5 and times it by .X where x is the number in meters between each 100 meter. You would then take this number and minus the MIL of the lower distance between the two known MIL So for example if you are targeting a distance of 1,068 you would take "23.5 times .68" this gives you 15.98. You can now subtract the MIL for 1,000M which is 764 MIL which would give you a final MIL of -748 (just ignore the negative number) this can be done with one equation in a basic scientific calculator as "(23.5 * .xx) - Y" where xx is the distance in meters between each 100 and Y is the MIL of the lower setting between the two. (kinda crappy explanation not a math guy) Of course given enough time you should just be able to quickly estimate/do it in your head. You could also add roughly 2.35 MIL for every 10 meters. Or you could add roughly 6 MIL for every 25 meters.

yeah fuck that I'm not doin any of that, I just mentally find the middle and go off of that. Tends to do the job just fine. In the time you've done those calculations I could have fired 3 approximate shells which will land one hit the closest
