Hollywood has the same problem that the video game industry currently has: bloated budgets, creative bankruptcy (lots of sequels, reboots, and remasters)…one or both industries are heading towards are soft crash, to where theses budgets are going to have to come down, and more chances can be able to be taken to revive both industries

Movies that immediately abandon an awesome fantasy setting to place the characters in the real world ought to be outlawed. And I don't care if we'll lose a few decent movies in the process.

the way this movie is described makes it sound like fosters home for imaginary friends, but it does make me think about how parents mustve reacted to a don bluth movie like the land before time which is ALL about the idea of a child not having their parents there with them.

there's been a recent "reevaluation" of the '93 Super Mario Bros movie with people saying that it's good, actually. can you believe that? edit: i dunno the first R rated movie i saw was Terminator 2 and i was 5 at the time and thought it was awesome. different kids can handle different things. also the Super Mario Bros movie, Barbie and Oppenheimer made tons of money just last year. if you make something people want to go see in a theater, they'll go

People are so deprived of new cultural developments that don't suck that they're desperately latching on to even the crap from the past, which in comparison to today's stuff is (seemingly) gold. Like how the star wars sequels were so bad people have started "reevaluating" the prequels to cope.

Listening to you talk about your kid’s interest in something that scares her really took me back! I remember hearing my mom talk about this thing called “The Shining” and it spooked me and intrigued me at once. I badgered her to tell me every scary detail, and you’re totally right when you describe it as a “scandalized child” 😂 The way kids process fear is interesting, and I think you’re totally right when you say it was important to accompany and guide her through something that scares her. Really sad Furiosa is bombing hard. That movie rules. 😢

My gf and I really enjoyed If. Movies not doing well in the theaters can be chalked up to many factors. 1. Movies go to streaming way too fast so most of us can and will just wait for PVOD/VOD. 2. Ticket prices are ridiculous, along with increasing concessions. 3. Content overload. - Just my 2 cents.

The narrative about people not going to the theaters has been persistent, but I also notice how many of my friends I talk to don't even know that these movies are coming out. "I didn't know there was a new POTA" and "I didn't know there was a new Mad Max". I wonder if the way studios advertise and raise awareness for these films is itself behind the times. I keep up with movie news and go to the theater every couple of weeks, and I haven't been able to figure out why more casual moviegoers just aren't paying attention... Likely it is all tied in to the streaming thing you guys are talking about. People watching less cable TV and more streaming are also probably seeing less ads, right?

To add to the comment you made about the movie being late, there was apparently some development hell aspects to it. To my understanding, originally Warner bros was going to make the movie around like 2016 or so. The story I heard was that the creator of the games hated what they were doing and scrapped the whole thing. Then blumhouse picked it up and announced they were making it, and restarting from square one (like the entire thing, script and all). I always assumed covid and the strikes messed with it even further too.

I've never really felt let down by a movie. I guess it's because I generally don't get overly hyped up for most things. I haven't been to a movie theater since 2010, so I think somewhere along the way my mind made the switch to put movies in the 'nice to have but not a necessity' category. I can't believe so many youtube channels want people to get back into the habit of going out to movies all the time like people did in the past. That's mindless consumerism. All forms of entertainment have to earn the ticket/purchase. A discerning audience is a good thing.

"It's not what I dreamed it would be" LMAO, been there 😂 Edit: This movie sounds like a live action version of "Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends." I can dig it. 14:30 - Yeah it's sad, culture is so much more atomized than it's ever been before. I think it's a double edged sword, people can get whatever content they're looking for, but there's much less of a sense of a unified zeitgeist than there used to be even just 10 years ago.

One argument for not going to the theater that I don’t see too often is that we now have 8K TVs with surround sound at home. Then, as you said. On top of already paying for the service that will have the movie on streaming soon after it releases.

I've had a 1080p DLP projector since 2012, really really nice image quality - looks great on my 140" projector screen, cost me $700 at the time. It looks better than a lot of projectors I've seen in theaters, and my sound system is better-calibrated. Throw in my 65" 4K 120Hz TV and my gaming PC that plays most games at 4K 120FPS, and the theater just hasn't impressed me in over a decade. Pacific Rim was impressive, then I saw it on my projector and it was even cooler. I can eat whatever I want during the flick, pause, rewind, take a call, go to the bathroom, no issues, and I get to actually own media I purchase, no one-time rental. I have a little childhood nostalgia for theaters, but it's only inevitable that they go away. Seems like a big part of the reason the studios are scrambling to throw away all their money at streaming services.

I think another big issue is the sheer volume of media available to consume. Almost everyone has a backlog of movies, Anime, TV series and video games. Put KZbin and Twitch into that and people just dont have enough hours in the day. Back in the 90s/2000s everyone got excited about the same thing, tbere is no Monoculture today like there was then.
@deludedreality89
@deludedreality89 3 ай бұрын
Yup, and if you notice, most of the big hits are movies/shows that are based on what was popular/part of the monoculture in the past. Oppenheimer was an outlier that got swept up with Barbie. But that's certainly the case with Barbie, Mario, Sonic etc. Once that well runs dry, it'll truly be game over for movie theaters.
@funkymonk255
@funkymonk255 3 ай бұрын
@@deludedreality89 i think the oppenheimer name is part of the monoculture because its something everyone has learned about in school before. also i dont necessarily believe that its game over for movie theaters when the member berry well runs dry because weve seen smaller movies like anyone but you become big successes and it was just a romcom that caught peoples attention. part of the decline of movie theaters is definitely owed to the service aspect and the climbing prices of tickets though

I think its sweet that during fnaf you reminded your kid that it's just a movie and talked about the technical aspects I think another thing too when talking about the box office failures is that marvel has conditioned people to do homework before watching new releases. The people I've talked to think they need to watch other Apes movies or Mad Max movies in order to understand the new ones, even tho they're pretty much standalone. Some things are perceived as "made for the fans," or niche, that general audiences feel like it's not made for them
