I have watched this video over and over. Everytime I do so, I always learn. I think that the Redding instant indicator is a great tool for anybody who has a limited mechanical background....like me. This tool makes critical measuring for precision reloading easy because you actually see the result instantly on the dial Indicator. Great video and I wish you the best Hornady Reloader.

Well done video. I learned quite a bit by watching this. I just built a nice 6.5 Creedmoor Masterpiece Arms chassis rifle. Bought a high end barrel, action, scope, and suppressor. So I wanted to get my reloading up to match grade level. This tool and this video is definitely putting me on a path to making some first rate ammo for competition.

That Lake City xm193 is seconds. The cartridges real name is m193, the ones that don't make inspection are sold as seconds as xm193. This is why your bullet seating depth was all over the place most likely. Hope it helps.

Excellent video. I don't know if you know yet, but Redding now includes a "range adapter" so you can use this die without the press. I'm planning on ordering soon and just discovered this new feature. This is probably the most detailed reloading video I have seen on youtube. Great job! As for your cons of using a die, if you have the Redding T7 you can swap back and forth very easily and is actually better than the hornady comparator/headspace gauge because you don't have to take the brass off the press.

You should call Redding. I called them and they are offering it free if you buy the instant indicator now and it doesn't come with the range adapter. I just got mine from Brownells, though, and it had it included. The range adapter just screws onto the bottom of the die. It's actually really nice! I would definitely give them a call and see if they will "sell" you one that will probably lead to them just giving you one :)

The Hornady Lock-N-Load collets are made to be purchased individually for each of your dies and I see various complaints about convenience when using one collet for several dies. They're meant to be dedicated to one die, set up, then never changed. That said, flats on the sides would be a superb addition by Hornady.

clay mcwilliams Thanks Clay, I did notice that the set screw has a softer pad on it, but I'm just concerned that it will compress too far and the harder steel part of the set screw will hit the threads. I'm probably just being overly protective, but it goes against all that I hold dear to screw something into the threads of my expensive dies, LOL. The advantage of being able to use my die wrench to pop it in and out is a big advantage too. Thanks again! Hornady Loader

Super helpful video, thanks. Just FYI, the Redding rings have a lead shot below the grub screw, so it won't mess up the threads. The Hornady rings are very nice, though.

+Allan Bazinet Hi Allan, yes, I know. But those lead balls can be compressed such that the metal part of the screw will come into contact with the threads. If you're careful, it's not an issue I suppose, but it's just one of my little quirks, lol. The big reason I switch em out is so I can use my Hornady Die wrench. Thanks for watching!

+HornadyLoader Yep, no argument there, the Hornady rings are definitely an improvement. Thanks again for the great video; I struggled with getting my resizing die set up properly until seeing this video and getting this gauge. A Wilson case gauge is a nice solution but it's very analog and subjective; the Redding makes things trivially easy.

Thanks for all the great videos. Suggestion: I have heard you asking Hornady to put flats on the LNL collets so you could tighten them. I doubt they will do that, but in the meantime I am going to try a spanner wrench. I just ordered one from Banggood.com for $4.29 including tax and shipping. And the handle is even red! It'll take a few weeks to get here, but they have always delivered what they represented. Tons of stuff on their site. I plan to use a band saw or Dremel tool to cut three notches, one every 120 degrees, in the rim of the collet to accept the spanner wrench. I may have to grind the spanner to fit the notches. I'll write in the future and let you know how it works out. But I am optimistic that this will work. Shalom, gw

Thanks for the video very informative. Maybe a stupid question but how does the bullet comparitor deal with different manufacturer's bullet shapes, where some are more "pointy" than others and when you may have a 250 grain or a 300 grain? So would I want to seat a more pointy bullet to the same ogive point as the reference as a more round headed bullet head or a heavier bullet that might be longer? I get that theres load lata out there to help with COL but surely a smaller (shorter) bullet wants to have the same amount of seating as a longer heavier bullet which would make the COL longer on the heavier bullet. I believe AI had exactly that problem with the AWM 338 Lapua Magnum and had to bodge a 300gr round by seating the bullet deeper so it would fit the shorter magazine/frame/bolt stroke? Anybody can give a definitive answer I'd appreciate it.

really grateful for this beautiful video, very comprehensive and straight to the point. it would be great if you can help me find out the answer for this question: i have 2 caliber that i am interested in using the redding instant indicator, .338 lapua and 6.5 creedmoor. having said that, do I need to buy 2 from each item in the video above, except for the dial indicator i will only buy it once and uesd for both? one more thing, have you tried the "range adapter"? per the redding webpage, the range adapter will replace the press and no need to use the press for measurements.

Do you need a new shell holder or what! Every time you run the ram up it jams on the top of the case neck and you have to push it with your finger to line it op. Thats not right.

Terry LeGrand Thanks Terry, I got a new camera, the old one just wasn't doing the job. I wish they had a way to update a video. The only way to replace a video is to delete it and upload a new one, which deletes all the comments, views, etc... This has been out for a few years at least. Is this dial a standard dial indicator, I've got several $400 digital dial gauges for use with my mill/lathe tooling??? I'd like to know if I can use my high-end dial indicator's???

In regard to the Redding die rings, they do have a piece of lead on the end of the set screw, but every time you tighten that set screw a little of the lead goes away there by making it impossible to fine tune the die without it catching on the threads that have burrs on the die threads. I change all of mine to the Hornady die split rings.

Just a small tip for someone who may not know......obtaining a small bag of lead shotshell pellets/beads will give you a lifetime supply of lead to insert into almost any set screw hole to replace or add to the worn out tip of a factory set screw so as not to damage threads of the die. It's an old mechanic's and machinist's trade trick for when use of a set screw is needed but damage to threads or any surface deformation cannot be tolerated. Plastic, wood, teflon, etc, can all be used based upon one's needs. Just my 2 cents. Hope this is a neat little trick for anyone who may not have already thought of doing this. Sir, when I'm reloading once fired brass, I'm in need of reading "how much force im applying to the ram" when im re- sizing neck size for bullet tension. All things being equal this should apply approx equal neck tension, does this tool measure force applied to ram During that process?

MR HORNADY RELOADER: i have a technical question for you....i have the rcbs competition sittin die for 308. it comes with a extended shell holder. i also have a redding competition bushing die for 300WM my question is this: can i use the redding bussing die to size 308 cases using the rcbs extended shell?

+JP811931 Hi, it shouldn't be a problem. As long as the shell holder dimensions are correct - from the part of the shell holder that the case head sits on to the top of the shell holder, it should measure 0.125". As long as that dimension is correct, you can use the extended shell holder with any die. Now, that being said, Redding also has a set of shell holders that are used to adjust the headspace without having to adjust the die. These shell holders have differing dimensions from the one I mentioned. These shell holders let you select a different dimension, for example 0.127" to increase the headspace by 0.002" Just measure your extended shell holder and if it is 0.125" from case head to the top of the shell holder, you are good to go with any die.

+Eddie Stivaoson Well, a go/no-go gage measures the chamber of your rifle where this measures the cartridges, but yes, you get more precise measurements from it. Although it is intended for use as a comparator rather than a measuring device since you can't really tell what the actual headspace is for example, but you can compare two cases to see how much they differ in several measurements, like headspace or case length. It's biggest advantage is the speed at which you can do these comparisons. Using a caliper takes quite a bit more time than it does with the Instant Indicator. Thanks for watching!

+JP811931 Hi, that would be great but no, it doesn't work. The stem on the Hornady dials are much shorter than the one on the Redding dials. The stem has to be long enough to contact the spacer in the Redding die but on the Hornady Concentricity/Neck Wall gauge that's not an issue so the stem is way too short on the Hornady dials.

I ended up buying a hotnady gauge separately with out knowing if it would work...to my surprise iy actually works perfectly...at least on the 300WM. I would assume for smaller calibers like 223 or 308 it would not work for the reasons u mentioned...smaller caliber stem as to sit deeper

Just an fyi: the set screw on the rcbs will never in 45 years, screw up the threads. The set screw is considerably softer than the threads. If anything you will eventually have to replace the set screw if you make a lot of adjustments over time. Will NOT damage the threads. Period. I know this from 45 years of using rcbs products. Recently I have started using Hornady dies. I do like the dies and locking system better, but I do insist on correcting misinformation regarding internet videos.

Neil Beri Hi Neil, Not necessarily. Most of the features of the Instant Indicator are used only if you want extreme precision from your hand loads. If you plan to enter a high-power rifle match where tiny fractions of an inch in your groups make the difference between winning and coming in last, then you would probably want to pay attention to those little details. However, if you plan to go plinking, or enter 3-gun competitions or other matches where extreme precision isn't needed, all those details are really just extra work for little benefit. That being said, even if you do want the precision, there are other tools that do the same thing. Trim lengths can be checked with a caliper and there are other, less expensive, bullet comparators, headspace gauges, etc. So it really depends on what you're going to do with your AR and, to some degree, how much you enjoy the hobby of reloading itself. Some folks see reloading simply as a way to reduce costs, some see it as a way to improve accuracy, and some enjoy the hobby so much that they want all the toys and doodads (like me, hehe).
