WIth only 2000+ votes, a top 500 is spreading the votes pretty thin. It pretty much makes the distinctions between rankings statistically meaningless, at least at the low end.

I was one of these votes. You could vote for up to 20 anime. You had to rank them as well and the higher the rank, the higher the points it could get. 1st pick was 5 points, 2nd/3rd 4 points, until 10th getting 2 points. Anything at 11-20 gets 1 point.

this is incorrect, nothing is being spread thin at all. This isn't one man one vote, it's "Everyone pick their top 20 and the 500 most highly rated are featured". This list is basically showing the 500 most frequently favorited anime out of a maximum potential 40,000 anime which could have been named by the voters.

What often are the issues with long running shows is the pacing being so slow, and there are so many great shows that deserve to be higher on the list.

He often posts collabs and japan-related content on his main channel because he puts alot more work into em and they get more views while he usually just talks into the camera about a topic on this channel. Not just that, Anime content is just so widely available that aside from Garnts seasonal rundowns and scripted essay-style vids, theres not much specific anime-related content that gets alot of views. Chris and Connor have both said it too that theres so much untapped content available in Japan and making vids of that and posting on the more relevant channel is probably a better decision overall.

I disagree man, fruits basket was incomplete, Maison ikkoku wrapped up in the perfect way,while I agree it deserves some recognition in this era, doesn't have to be a remake, I personally don't want the new cringe self proclaimed WEEBS to absolutely butcher the fandom of this masterpiece of an anime, maybe an ova of after story like the pachinko animation is a better approach,but there is no need to touch the original, it's perfect as it is, I may be yapping a lot, but this anime just has a very special place in my heart and I personally don't want it to get ruined. Maison Ikkoku is my favorite story ever, glad it was on the list atleast. Honestly i don't think it needs a remake at all. The art and animation is very beautiful, the voice acting is great, the adaptation is almost perfect expect a few left out chapters from the manga, but still perfect. Its a perfect anime that doesn't need a remake imo.

Re zero is one of those stories where you are so heavily rewarded for both watching the anime and then reading the light novel. The novel has some of the best world building ever. There are 55+ side stories going from some characters back stories to some character's POV while the main story takes place to get to know their inner thoughts to crazy big revalations in the side stories(especially arc 6 onwards). Highly recommend people to go read it. Gives me the same vibes as going in for a deep dive in dark souls lore.

Golden Time is 1000 times better than Fire Force. The problem with many of these anime lists is that incredible shows are shoved to the bottom because everyone watches the popular shounen. The shounen is good, but people need to watch more anime in other genres. Kaguya-sama is my favorite anime so seeing it in the top 10 makes me so happy. I recommend it to a lot of people who watch anime and many don’t even know what it is. Makes me sad.

As someone who loves both K-ON! And Bocchi the Rock, I've overanalyzed the shit out of both shows. And I'd actually say Bocchi does a lot of things better than K-ON, and yes, I do think it's slightly better. Top 20 however???? Yeah I agree that's probably too high.

I do think a caveat with Frieren being number 1 is that it actually is it has relatively low in the number of people who view it as their #1-3 favorite anime. However, it, by far, dominated the #4-20 favorite anime. What probably happened was a lot of people, when thinking of what to fill out their list after their top favorites, chose Frieren as it was the most recent high quality anime series they could remember. Obviously, there are still a lot people who viewed it as a their absolute favorite (like me) but it’s wide appeal combined with recency bias means that it gained a lot of points in its favor.

Depends on the criteria ofcourse. It is very good, but its technically "just another isekai". When it was written it was amazing but the anime released after the big trash-isekai-incident. Now most of its ideas seem stale. It is amazing how it manages to be this unique despite those "facts". Joy clearly likes his deep intellectual anime. So Mushoku with its obvious themes (as a shounen is supposed to) is just not appealing to him (a now grown adult). Doesn t stop me though (a "grown adult")

As a Music anime fan and it being my absolute favourite anime, was super happy to see Hibike Euphonium so high! I enjoy so many music anime, just the one that resonated the most with my personal music journey and relating to Kumiko so much. And as an aspiring Music/arts person hits me deeply. Reason it’s my favourite personally because it hits the same regardless of how many times I see it. Just my personal thoughts on that one and yes, yes we are crazy 🧐😆 but probably because of our love for Music. Hope everyone has found an anime they can invest their time and emotions into ☺️☺️☺️ Final episode of season 3 this Sunday 30th June, both excited and feeling bittersweet for it!

I need to watch Hibike Euphonium, I've only heard great things about it, especially when Kyoto Animation is in charge! Recently I've finished K-On, which is less of a music anime than Hibike or Blue Giant for example but still is an amazing work from Kyoto Animation. I don't know anything about music being a psychology student but I was always interested in it, so thanks for convincing me to give this anime a go.

Agree it's hard to call Frieren number 1 just yet, but it's definitely a contender for me. First time I've bought physical manga. All around, they nailed it. Characters, story, worldbuilding, well thought-out DND mechanics, comedy, tragedy. My biggest complaint at this point is that Frieren hasn't shown any real weakness in battle - even in flashbacks. But what drew me in is her learning to grieve, and come to terms with the passage of time. Many GOAT anime have touched on this - Shinobu Mail arc (and Hachikuji Time), End of Gurren Lagann, Gunbuster/DB. And here it is presented in a beautiful journey structured like Shinichiro Watanabe had directed it. Katanagatari is another it brings to mind. It's hard to say how it will end, but isn't it worthwhile to live in the moment and love those close while you can?

If all 2000 voters (which btw is not a lot of people to make a top 500 list with) watched all 500 shows, then sure we would probably see a voting more in line with what Joey proposed. But I'd bet many people haven't even seen much of this list, and there will be people who watched SoL for 5 years and not much else, of course they'd rate something like Gochiusa as their favorite. For a good list we'll either need a LOT more votes, or split it into genres imo.

I keep seeing Joey talking smack about rankings, and honestly I want to see him make a top 100 list himself. I'm not a Frieren stan, but if you don't think the individual season was good, that's fair. However, hating on Frieren for not being finished yet is like saying Batman Begins and The Dark Knight can't be highly rated movies just because The Dark Knight Rises hadn't been released yet. It's an absolutely nonsensical argument. Let the rating tank if the series messes up in a later season, but that doesn't mean the first season can't arguably be the best first seasons ever, and therefore the highest-rated season of anime. Overlord definitely could have sat a lot higher on the list if the seasons had been just a little bit longer each, so more of the cut content could have been included. The light novel is still the best and superior way to experience Overlord's story through, I recommend others to check out the light novel.

@@poorsocialskills So it’s basically this anime about girls who literally compete with other high school teams with historical WWII tanks for sport (Sensha-do) and live on their schools aircraft carriers. It’s actually so hype and has a cult following kind of like the euphonium anime and has like almost entirely 8s across the board on MAL. It’s honestly really hard to explain lore wise but here is like a small rendition. Miho Nishizumi is the main protagonist who once went to school (Kuromorimine) with her sister and we’re both the commanders of their Sensha-do teams for their own “style” which is all based on tactics used by different counties in WWII (Kuromorimine is German based). But due to Miho losing the championship finale due to leaving her tank (hers was the flag tank and destruction of that tank is an automatic win) to help an friendly tank that was sliding off a cliff. To get away from Sensha-do, Miho left Kuromorimine and transferred to Oorai which did not have a team as it was disbanded. However, the student council president forced her to start up a new team as she had great experience. From there, the story shows how Miho and the rookie tankers progress their skills. There’s a standard series, a movie, and a 6 part 1 hour long each season that is still airing (just released part 4). A KZbinr Potential History did a breakdown of all the historical references through most of the series up until part 1 of the 6 part. I really recommend this to anyone who likes history or just wants to see girls bang around in tanks. Sensual-do is also a 100% safe sport, somehow.

With so few people voting across so many titles, that back end ends up really wacky. Oreimo may have tied Terror in resonance on their scale with one less vote, but both of them ended up with less than half a percent take rate on any particular list. I really think anything that had a broadcast in the last 2 years needs to be smacked with the recency bias stick. Doubley so for series that havent concluded. Not to say that Frieren, Vinland Saga, or Jujutsu Kaisen aren't all quality shows. But wow it seems like a show is everywhere and then it ends up on the back half of a 500 like a Shakugan no Shana, Blue Exorcist, or Paprika. I really hope they can amass a bigger poll next year. Maybe expand it to a top 50 to catch a few more strays

I don't think that even I would comment on everything I don't agree with, considering that we're talking about a top 500, but D-Frag over Working is an...interesting choice. D-Frag is one of those over-the-top-comedy series, like Nichijou or Asobi Asobase. Those CAN be fun but are trying too hard. Working isn't exactly normal either, but at least it TRIES to stay realistic. Wait...The Jellyfish-anime is on the list? Is it even completely out yet? As far as I can tell, it's just a less interesting version of Oshi No Ko. OreImo being anywhere NEAR the top 500 is definitely a mistake. Who the fuck thought that THAT series deserved ANY kind of praise?! If Index is on the list, the character was probably the last reason for why. Honestly, Index doesn't really start getting good before the end of season 1. I watch the series for Accelerator (who apparently either doesn't have an actual name or discarded it) and Railgun (Misaka Mikoto). Index is just a walking library with a worse behaviour than feral animals. Fire Force is actually better than Soul Eater. SE is boring as fuck. The best episodes are the ones in which Excalibur pisses off every character and one character uses guns like Jake Peralta in one episode of Brooklyn Nine-Nine. Fire Force's biggest downside is Tamaki: A character that has so much fan service that she's actually useless. I want a 3rd season, simply because her being tired of it hasn't been brought up enough until she trained under Benimaru. However, the OSTs KICK ASS! Golden Time is in a weird position. That's the kind of anime that kind of sucks the first time and is only really good once you rewatch it, because I have no idea how to feel about the amnesia-plot. I guess it's sad, but the timing feels...too convenient. Your Name being in the top 30 is a goddamn crime against humanity! That movie is 2+ hours of artwork with a confusing time-travel-setting. I mean...Anime-movies are mediocre at best in general, but that movie is way longer than it has any right to be. Gurren Lagann is also overrated as fuck. Frieren is not even the best fantasy-anime. Hai To Gensou No Grimgar is the upgrade and it wasn't even on the list. At least I haven't seen it on the list, which is a shame. Long story short, this list is in a similar position to the Top 100-video and you can almost entirely reverse the rankings. What the fuck was the deal with the top 50? There was barely a single good show out of those that I've watched.

I get you would write off frieren as recency bias but to its credit the animation and story telling have gone above and beyond. No random twist hooks like madoka magika. An engaging story from beginning to end unlike steins gate where certain episodes are just a slog to get through. Just fantasy, amazing animation from studio trigger, and a banger sound track with great sound design throughout. One punch man season one was much higher on the list before season 2 but if they decide to end frieren here i think it deserves its spot. If another season comes out it probably wont hold up much like opm but for right now frieren deserves to stay.

I really enjoyed watching it as a literal 14 year old.
