@stevenlynch34568 ай бұрын
You're implying that the "normal" human isn't an extremist. It would be extremely statistically surprising if any given human isn't extremist in at least one aspect. A person who is average by every possible metric (e.g., hobbies, weight, various forms of intelligence, stances on political issues, etc), would be very, very unlikely. If you are intending to mean that only the viewpoints expressed on Reddit are extremist, then that's probably a case of "if you don't have anything interesting to say, then don't say it" combined with "this post is boring so I won't pay much attention to it" and other places on the web restricting those topics even moreso than Reddit does. Extremist viewpoints will naturally gain more views over time than regular viewpoints, regardless of the platform; content moderation should also be considered a factor in the question of "what content should be allowed to persist?". The extremist points of views are what spark great discussions and are what define the full range of the human experience. Otherwise, we'd all be talking about how we walked/drove to work today on a road in a car, with no further details given, like how your car works or how the sun shines or how your car mechanic is a classic liberal/sociopath/trumper/greedy human. Yes, I'm defining extremism to include those more esoteric topics like car functionality because they are not frequently talked about in mainstream media and therefore are not "average"/"normal". I am American, so that may be a contributing factor to the deeper topics not being commonly discussed; maybe it's a global thing. tl;dr The extremism of Reddit's content for training an AI is good too, not only bad. If Reddit weren't extremist, there would be minimal effectiveness in using its data to train an AI to act in ways that a human would.

The irony of forcing advertising on a website, who's user base is well known for absolutely hating advertising. And then there are the many AMA's. Some of them are great, and we get great responses from celebrities and companies alike! But then there's the one like Google did the other day, where they completely ignored every single issue that has been nagging Google users for years. Reddit is an interesting beast; currently one of the best archives of human knowledge (since Google has become so damn useless for searching lately), and at the same time one of the scummiest underbellies of the internet. Yep. On the line of alternative revenue sources, I also feel like partnerships such as the one between Google and Apple may be the way to go. iPhones basically acts as a giant ad for Google Search due to having it as default, but people don't notice and don't react to iPhones negatively due to this de-facto built-in ad, unlike other ads. Can Reddit pull off something similar? For instance they could build in a default video editor or search engine specific to posts on Reddit but in doing so, advertise another brand in the process and that brand has to pay Reddit to be advertised.

The opening thesis of this video is ridiculous. There's no reason to think Reddit should make anywhere near the money Instagram does. Reddit is people making text posts and linking to images and discussing anything. Instagram has a zillion influencers and it's all about showing off lifestyles meaning clothing/food/experiences/things people consume. If Reddit was monetized like Instagram it wouldn't be Reddit anymore. I don't even like Reddit but the basis of this video is silly. Craigslist making more makes sense. Instagram advertises things with celebrities. Craigslist sells things. Craigslist has been around for a zillion years. Saying Reddit should be making tons of money is like saying 4chan should. They're both meant for talking, not showing off the dress, car or house you secretly rented to pose for posts in. This channel just keeps choosing false premises about popular things. "Why Sony is doing awful." But it's not. "Why Nintendo is doing awful." But it's not. Nintendo has rebounded and had tons of successes but the creator just authoritatively states a false narrative as fact and it's gobbled up.

Reddit's bots incorrectly correcting posts in non English subreddits when another language has or looks like it has borrowed English words makes the training dataset quite polluted with bad AI scripting logic. And whenever bot makes nonsensical mistakes, entire thread becomes NSFW.

There should've at least been a mention of the reddit blackout and the cause of them not so long ago. Reddit wanted to start charging 3rd party apps to use the api. A number of developers said they were willing. The problem is that the cost was unsustainable for many. Reddit ceo basically flipped them off like Elon flipped the bird. There is something to be said though over Google wanting to AI'ify reddit when for so long people have bypassed googles normal results by specifically including reddit in the search phrases.

I boycott Reddit since they pretty much blocked out third party apps by charging ridiculous fees for the API access.
@skywz8 ай бұрын
Something I think you forgot to mention is that ever since the third party apps debacle, a substantial chunk of Reddit's userbase hates the company and will expend effort to make sure they don't succeed. For instance, I've heard (but haven't verified) that some subreddits have been encouraging bot and bot-like comments to mess with the AI scraping.

For worst monetization: I nominate Twitter in the 2010s. I would subscribe to several third party services that helped manage followers and tweets while paying nothing to Twitter itself.

I left reddit because of the power tripping moderators and bullying of people who have a different opinion. I found more freedom in KZbin instead of reddit in the comment sections of said apps. Also the official reddit apps is one of the worst apps I've had the misfortune of using. Slow, buggy and annoying
@PokeMaster222228 ай бұрын
It doesn't help that Reddit effectively blocked third-party mobile apps a couple years ago - apps that made viewing Reddit content much more user-friendly. Also, back when Reddit was new, subReddits could be of practically any topic; however, especially in the last decade, Reddit's become significantly stricter about the content depicted on the site, and more prone to deleting overly-controversial subs. These two events have driven people away from Reddit, as it's no longer what it used to be.

User since like 15 years, and it's surprised me how much the website grew in the last years, so many casual knowing it, and so many google search leading to it. But what really surprised me, is that last week, I clicked on an ad.... by myself, not a mistake, I WAS interested by what I saw, and even thought about buying the product later. Before, all the things I could be interested to buy. I saw on ads.. I akready owned them.

I have to agree with the other comments. It's a great platform because it doesn't have hypermonetization. Funny how in the view of capitalism, it's seen as a failure, even if it gives communities such huge value. I expect them to eventually start slapping paywalls on everything and everyone jumps ship to "the next big thing".

You’re comparing website traffic for platforms that get most of their traffic and nearly all their revenue from mobile apps, Reddits mobile app sees far less traffic than their site, while the platforms you compare it to, are the opposite. And before you say you’re comparing the actual sites for FB and IG, their mobile apps often share links that take you to their website and not their app. So people share content from the platforms they got through the apps and when others open it, it opens ion their website, inflating the numbers.

I fail to see how reddit not making hand over fist of money year after year is a bad thing. Honestly it's probably best served as a community discussion board that just breaks even with the bank or has a small profit on the side. Anything more then that is excessive and will begin to dilute the whole purpose of the site which will cause the userbase to find another site to talk on.

reddit's failure on monetization has nothing to do with having a anti consumerism audience. there's a difference between disliking ads and disliking consumerism. everyone consumes.
@gen-X-trader8 ай бұрын
Reddit just seems less offensive than the others. While group think is a major issue there and the unpaid power hungry mods are a problem, compared to Facebook with the constant marketing and algorithm fed timeline that you can't control. At least with Reddit it it feels like you have some control over what you do

@@Imdan92 it's just a different toxic. Reddit has a problem with groupthink. Twitter has a problem with extreme right wing posters and conspiracy theorists
@Tential18 ай бұрын
@@gen-X-traderone of my main issues with Reddit is that people there are notorious for being socially inept. It is extremely common that I read a thread where a person has asked a question and the whole group purposely decides to misinterpret the question and then not answer it even when the person clarifies. Example, a person wanted a short term bond investment. They just ruthlessly harassed the dude, saying he should just buy 1-2 year bonds, don't worry about t bills, it's basically the same return, blah blah blah. Sgov exists... It's literally exactly what he asked for. But instead, they condescendingly talk down. One dude on KZbin has a perfect series depicting how reddit people act. 40% of the time they're good, but a lot of the time, they're socially stupid, and it leads to bad answers.

Reddit is good because it's community-driven. The problems start to appear higher up in the hierarchy. Mods (the big ones) and admins are a joke with Steve "spez" Huffman being the biggest clown of them all. I fondly remember when all of Reddit united to spell out "fuck spez" on r/place because of his efforts to sanitize Reddit before the upcoming IPO. That basically involved cracking down on free speech, killing 3rd party apps and squeezing as much money as possible from users.

If they fixed that god awful new UI and leaned deeper into awards, I think it could be great.
@Morpheus-pt3wq8 ай бұрын
One of the reasons it´s such failure might be related to their broken and buggy text editors. Their current most modern text editor and its predecessor (Fancy Parts) both can´t handle URL links or even simple copy-paste of plain text. The only usable one is the most basic one, in which text formatting is done completely via text commands. On top of that, Reddit did not learn a single thing from their 3rd party apps (which they forbid about a year ago), which offered more usability than the official app will ever be able to. In short, they´d like to monetize more, but struggle to provide even basic quality tools for the user.
