Fencing - H post

Using cedar logs to build an H post for installing 48" horse fencing. Using cedar since it is naturally rot resistance.

Very well built I like how you did it very minimal hardware with a rustic look. I am curious how it is doing today, 6 years later. Have you had to replace any posts due to rot? What is your climate, or state? We have thousands of cedar trees on our property here in N. Texas but I have been told if I use for braces they will only last 4 years.

Thanks for sharing this series, really interesting. I was wondering why you left the rebar in place, I have never seen it done that way. Is it to have in place for future re tightening?

Correct - since the wood was green when it was installed I wasn't sure if I would need to pull it together at a later date. Thanks for watching!

Great video, but after reading an engineering perspective on braces, I think it's counterproductive to make an x-brace. I believe you only want bracing going from the top of the second post to bottom of the first. The H-beam transfers the high-torque tension from the first post to the second. The brace then transfers this high torque back in the other direction to the low-torque area at the bottom of the first post. Placing the second brace and making an X would transfer some of that tension back to the first post, thus being counterproductive. But, I could be wrong. Any thoughts? PS, the X would make sense if it's a center brace, and not a corner brace.

I understand what the engineer is saying (I am an engineer also) and I can agree with what you have typed. Not sure the depth they are putting the poles in the ground, we went 3 feet? When I built these sections I had intentions of putting a gate on the opposite side, which I haven't done yet based on animals do not use then pens very often. Different school of thought but I can tell you I had a friend (structural engineer) of my come up and look at it after being completed and he said that it solid and little over designed for the fence. Happy fence building, I can tell you it gets easier with every section you put up!!

Jeff - thanks for sending the article over, I enjoy articles with diagrams also. While I can't refute the article in anyway, I just want to share what I saw today when I walked more than a 1/4 mile of fence with multiple connections. I checked all my fencing today with additional attention to detail and found the fence and braces as tight as it was the day it was installed. I didn't see any tilt in my H or corner post. With this said I am not an expert but we build a pretty good fence on a tight budget! I really appreciate you commenting and for sharing any information that will help others! Shalom

grin and bear it - they are one of a few Red wings still made in the USA, so I buy them. This is the 4th pair I have worn out, I usually get 2 years out of a pair provided I am willing to put 3 or 4 new sets of laces in them. How long did your last?
