Second for Catholicism. No early Christians believed “just accept Jesus and that’s it”. The Eucharist, confession, learning about mortal/venial sin and how to minimize sinful tendencies, etc. It’s a beautiful tradition. God wants people to take accountability for their lives and change with the help of the Holy Spirit, not just hear an empty message that “Ok you’re saved, you can’t do anything other than have more faith.”

I love my church and the people there, but I really want my church to be a stronghold against the culture, instead of adopting its ways with the hope of making the gospel more “attractive”.

Nerdy theology helped save my faith. I was drifting in the emotionalism of my church, thinking I would go to hell because I wasn’t in a “good enough relationship with Jesus”. So I started researching theology. Intellectually understanding the faith, and what “faith” actually is (Hebrews 11:1) gave me peace with God thru faith in Jesus (Romans 5:1) . I’ve begun reading the book of Concord, and studying Lutheranism. It’s awesome. That’s what Protestantism is meant to be. Delivering the verbal message of the Gospel, aided by the visible gospel of the sacraments. Thanks Zoomer.

Very similar here on my end. I grew up Pentecostal & non-denominational. All the way through college I had never once was convinced I was a "real" Christian because I didn't have radical born again experience and didn't know if I had enough of a "personal relationship" (since that would imply I wouldn't be as much a sinner as I know I am or that I would be hearing God speak to me personally). I then got into studying theology & quickly replaced that anxiety with a new anxiety about whether or not I was in the "true church" and spent a couple years desperately trying to figure out if the Catholics, Orthodox, Oriental Orthodox, or others were the "real" church that I needed to find to be saved. I also visited a Greek Orthodox church at this time, but that's a whole other story. Somehow, I ended up finding Lutheran theology which thoroughly answered my questions and pointed me to Christ rather than my own experience or anxieties about the competing churches. My wife & I were confirmed in the LCMS in early summer after almost of year of catechesis and we are very happy now.

They didn’t offer any opportunities, follow up or give me a major leadership position, but God taught me that my secular campus is my mission field and despite the many challenges that came, He is sovereign. So much about the church does not appeal to men anymore, but I struggle with this. The music, the worship, even the message sometimes falls flat. For me it's easily the music though. I really don't like any contemporary Christian music. Last week my church sang two hymns instead and we even had a special classical guitar with an opera singer and in those moments I felt my mind clear and my spirit began to read itself to receive the word of God more than I ever have. The specifics of what kind of music to listen to might not be in the Bible but I think it's evidently clear from an experience like that that there is a difference

I saw at least part of a video on some obscure Orthodox channel about the development of the Orthodox Church in Cambodia, and they guy said they needed to make sure the church building was beautiful because that was the only way the Cambodians would respect the religion. And for people who aren't aware, Cambodia is famous for its ornate Buddhist temples and one of them is even on the flag, so it's really no surprise how important "pretty buildings" are to Cambodians when it comes to matters of faith.
@mrmegamarksman27 күн бұрын
To add onto that, I think things like church buildings, events, and charity are surface level factors that can lead to people getting introduced to Christians as a group. What gets people to stay afterwards is the word of God. I’ve actually met a few Cambodians who were former Buddhists. They were initially attracted to the church by fun community events, but they stayed afterwards once they realized what the religion was truly about. This was in America though, so it was likely easier to convert without the social pressure. Regardless, it still shows the importance of the physical presence of the church and how it lends hand in hand with the spiritual. Do note though that a big, beautiful church doesn’t matter if the spiritual foundation is not Jesus Christ. All people, including Cambodians, will stay for the message, not for the building. Though important for now, buildings will break down one day, but God will be around forever.
@fighterofthenightman105727 күн бұрын
Two big problems, IMO: 1. Contemporary worship is inherently more feminine than traditional worship. So, your average man looking for a church isn’t going to want to hand wave to an electric guitar in a church that looks like a high school auditorium. 2. The United States is historically VERY clearly a Protestant nation from a cultural perspective, and in many ways it still is. So, I think Catholicism has a low ceiling in the US for people without a Catholic ancestral background (only about 20% of Americans). We are SEVERELY lacking in historic Protestant churches - the churches that were culturally dominant for almost all of our nation’s history. We must revive them specifically to have any chance of stopping the secular trend.

Anyone have any advice for people like me to make the church experience more pleasant?
@ilovejesus00727 күн бұрын
I'd recommend to start slowly. Maybe after Sunday Service is over you make it a goal to just talk to 1 other person for a couple of minutes. If you hate small talk (like me) just ask them what they thought of the sermon. Or ask them how long they have attended the church you go to. after a minute or 2 when it seems like the convo is done or isnt going anywhere simply tell them that you hope they have a wonderful rest of their Sunday afternoon and leave. Do that for a month or something, then find a new person to do the same thing. After a year or whatever you will know 20+ people in the church, why they attend that church and how long they have been going, and their theology due to asking them about the sermon etc. Honestly doesnt seem like much, especially if there are hundreds of people in your church, But its better than not knowing anyone and just leaving 5 seconds after the service is done and running out the door. This is kind of how I do things and it seems to be better than just forcing myself to volunteer in a group of 30+ people in the church. Doing that will just overwhelm you and you might get burnt out. Just remember you will be going to church for the rest of your life, taking things slow when it comes to building relationships will help you in the long run. And most importantly you go to church to worship the One true living God, thats the most important thing.

For me as a BJU student, chapel and many of the churches around here just evangelize to you. You attend a few services and you've attended them all. Very elementary level stuff being taught over and over and over and over..... "It's good to be reminded," is like telling college students it's good to review the alphabet. Ugh! The Church of God I attend is great, but I have to drive nearly 20 minutes to get to it. If not for that good church, I would lose my mind. Nearly every chapel is like the movie Groundhog Day. I bring up chapel because it's mandatory and meets multiple times a week.

The original concept of being red-pilled was not about super masculinity. It's about becoming aware of the gynocentric culture and justice system we live in that promotes hypergamy, polyamory, and divorce for women. An eighteen year old who is dating is unaware of the hidden realities. As a result, a man needs to protect themselves from those things by having high standards when it comes to marriage. Much of the culture including Christians preaches to men to have lower standards and just get married, and be a devoted husband, when in reality Christian men really need to make sure they marry a Christian with reasonable views on things like finances, parenting, theology, and divorce, or else they have a much higher risk of facing divorce. Men should avoid living together for example, another cultural temptation, for many reasons because including legal problems that can arise. There are things women should do to protect themselves as well, but the main point is that the legal system is more on their side when it comes to those things.

I don't agree with any of this 5 minutes in. I'm a 21-year-old recent theology graduate and non-denominational. I know many young men who confess to be Christian, including some you'd call masculine (like footballers, hockey players and even an MMA fighter!). I don't think the problem with religion in atheist circles is a gender issue (unless it's females complaining about Pauline misogyny or one Indian girl who grew up Catholic in a culture where women on their menstrual cycle were banned from attending church - but it's RARELY a masculinity problem in my circles). Reasons for people disliking religion tend to be down to a question of morality and the problem of evil, as well as concerns of bias and boredom etc.

This is not about physically going to church per se but more-so about Christianity as a whole: young men also have a tendency to rebel (due to highs of energy, turning angst into "the fight" and so on) and so many follow causes against what is "acceptable to rebel against" so to speak. Since the 19th century, it's been slowly "established" that the Church and Christianity is "ok" to rebel against, and youth followed that. Young men also have a lower chance of going through some great tragedy that makes them physically and mentally weak (deaths of close ones and so on); hence, in combination with "aging out" of that angst (usually around 25) plus experiencing more of Life itself, I do see, anecdotally ofc, that they begin to consider Christianity and the Church with more respect eventually. I have a friend who mocked the tradition of going to church when we were teens, but now himself attends regularly.

I agree with your points except the idea that God is "impassable" as you said. Genesis 6:6 - 13 And it repented the LORD that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart. And the LORD said, I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth; both man, and beast, and the creeping thing, and the fowls of the air; for it repenteth me that I have made them. (Granted this is maybe the most extreme example available, but bear with me). Jesus shows a righteous wrath against the money changers in the temple, and also curses a fig tree for not bearing fruit when it was out of season. I get your point that maybe the personal sins we make day to day do not affect God in a meaningful way, but there seems to be good evidence that God does indeed react to humanity in an emotive way.

Zoomer, I think you may wish to re-evaluate how you define masculinity and femininity, the Romans who go to the gladiatorial games couldn't be more masculine as to be masculine is a good thing and watching the gladiatorial games is a bad thing, its not that the games are more masculine, its that the pagans were twisting masculinity into a sinful version of it. Ditto with modernity, the problem is not finding the right "mix" its about finding true femininity and masculinity.

I can tell how feminized a congregation has become based on their description of God. If He is kind and loving (except for the OT but we don't talk about that here). Or He is gracious and just. Grace from God is not kindness nor a human emotion nor a good feeling. It's a merciful adjudication of a sinner not condemned to pay ones own penalty.

Good thoughts. I will also add older people at church need to keep their hands to themselves. Older women forcing a hug on me or an older guy walking up behind me and clapping me on the shoulder or back of the neck is not cool - especially when I don't know them. Seems to happen frequently even as I have visited churches of different denominations, and it seems like something people do way more to younger men.

At the end of the day it’s not really clear if they’re saving souls. They baptize people and send them off hoping that they’ll stay inline with their decision for the rest of their lives. There’s no official doctrine to guide them. They read the Bible but at the end of the day, the Bible is hard to understand and eventually you have to look up stuff and receive your interpretations from Protestants. Come to the Catholic Church, we’ve been doing this for almost two thousand years. Pray to God about it 1 Timothy 3:15 Best of luck on your faith journey

RZ; Regarding your comments on Wagner's channel in the three synoptic gospels when Christ says "whose depiction and inscription is on this coin??" And people say "Ceasars!" Jesus doesn't say "NO, Ceasars skin isn't silver. And his head is 3D and about 20x bigger. This is a flawed phantasm and does not actually represent Ceasar at all!" He implicitly acknowledges that the imperfect image is of a certain man through the intent of the artist and the inscription. As long as people have a mature understanding that Jesus isn't a Caucasian man... No harm is done. The same as if people didn't start rejecting the Emperor because his skin isn't silver like the "true emperor" from the coin If Ceasar is a man, and Christ has a human nature... As St Theodore studite and St John Damascene say this becomes a purely christological issue.

Regarding numbering of commandments: the Torah, let alone chapter and verse divisions, -they are called the 10 "WORDS" in scripture. It is tradition that there are ten "commandments". The first "word" could be the identification of YHWH. Which would be CRUCIAL to understand the other "words" in context. To me this is what naturally makes more sense (for exodus 20): And God spoke all these words: -1- “I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. -2- You shall have no other gods before me, You shall not make for yourself an image in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. You shall not bow down to them or worship them; * FOR I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments. * -3- You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God; *FOR THE Lord will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name.* -4- Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your male or female servant, nor your animals, nor any foreigner residing in your towns. *FOR IN six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.* -5- Honor your father and your mother; *SO THAT you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you.* (I put the *asterisks* on the paragraphs where I believe this shows explanation and/or punishment - "FOR/SO THAT"; and makes a reasonable break between the 4 first commandments.) Even without the 1st word being identification of who the commandments are from/regarding.... -Deuteronomy 5 came later and is more likely to be the refined/correct split of the final word(s) -the *for/so* paragraphs show how the first 4 commandments ought to be naturally divided. Exodus 34 ritual Decalogue: 12 Take care, lest you make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land to which you go, lest it become a snare in your midst. 13 You shall tear down their altars and break their pillars and cut down their Asherim 14 (for you shall worship no other god, for the Lord, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God), Verse 14 shows the intrinsic link between having altars and pillars and asherim (idols) And the commandment to "worship no other Gods; for God is a jealous God" 1. There is parallelism between these two imperatives (coveting property, coveting another's wife ) and the imperatives to not commit adultery and to not steal, which everyone regards as two separate Words. Thus we should reckon these two imperatives as two separate words. 2. This is strengthened by the fact that in the Deuteronomy 5 version these imperatives are in the same order as the Words against adultery and theft, strengthening the parallelism. 3. The Deuteronomy 5 version of the Decalogue uses different verbs in the two imperatives. It says one must not "covet" (Hebrew, ) a neighbor's spouse, but that one must not "desire" (Hebrew, ) a neighbor's property. Two separate verbs, thus two separate Words. 9 commandments? First "word" identification of God. 3 for Trinity 6 for man This does not prove anything particularly one way or the other. Many Orthodox use the Protestant numbering yet venerate icons. And Lutherans use the common Catholic numbering yet refuse icon veneration. I used the Catholic numbering for simplicity I'm confessions. Even though I honestly believe this is how the original ten words were seperated. God bless

I was told once in an Emotional Intelligence class that the part of the program I have mentioned before, and they mentioned that the are of the brain that processes emotions is below the prefrontal cortex, the part of the brain that processes reason, logic and the cold hard facts you are interested in. The prefrontal cortex is behind your forehead. It its not a left brain right brain thing because the prefrontal cortex and the part of the brain that deals with emotions below it exists on both the left and the right part of the brain. (Throwing that in there because it's true) it would explain why the 16personalities quiz results I took multiple times every 6ish months had me flip flopping between INTJ-A and INFJ-A. In short, both areas of the brain are meant to be used because most people use them anyway, throughout their entire life, contrary to the not 100% scientific or accurate, (even though it can be helpful) 16 personalities quiz, which implies a large part of one's personality will be expressed one or the other more, through your life, it's not always a personality thing as a everyone does it thing, fluctuating daily, and since, correct me if ime wrong someone, since, even though some people are more expressive with either more than others, i saw it as a requirement, personally, because that is how a brain usually functions healthily. And so comes that balance between the two because of the fruits of the spirt, but also because of discernment, knowledge, and wisdom. And emphasizing one over the other is not the best. So that would mean that they would express both those aspects in worship, sermons, and community.
