I have finally played Xbox's latest release: Redfall. Redfall is an open world FPS co op shooter from Arkane Austin and has been widely panned as one of the worst game releases of 2023. Is important to note that close to 70% of Arkane's original staff left during Red Fall's development. Not only were they forced to make a kind of game that isn't their strength (multiplayer open world) but also ended up losing most of their talent, and it's sad.

Yeah, the video mentions how this most likely won't be the end of arckane studios because we don't know their financial situation, but that doesn't really matter. The vast majority of the people that made arkane what it was are now gone, and there's no way they left suitable replacements to fill all those roles. Arkane as we knew them from Prey 2017 is already dead.

Multiplayer games require whole different department that takes care of servers, connection and stability, and open worlds have a much different design and layout and gameplay must be designed accordingly. And your last point is just dumb, if you want a certain type of game you look for a studio that makes that type of games, otherwise you're being willfully stupid. If you combine that with change of 70% of your staff and horrible direction you've got yourself a mess of a game.

I absolutely adore Gen Zero, the early game where you're piecing together the narrative while hiding from unknown enemies with great sound design is just... chef kiss Arkane's fall from grace after how incredible Prey was (pistol viewmodel and name aside) is just sad. Here's hoping they can return to form for their next game, the industry needs more people keeping the immersive sim genre alive

good video, id like to see more of this style from you! Also your improvements to editing are really showing through as time goes on. one piece of criticism i'd offer is that at times it felt like gun sounds, or music during transitions, were at a higher volume than your voice and the rest of the video, and so i found myself playing with the volume slider a bit throughout the video. but maybe thats just me

I remember when news broke that Bethesda had trademarked Redfall for an upcoming game and people were hyped and assumed it was related to TES:VI. Because REDguards live in HammerFELL. Just funny how we thought Redfall was a game everyone wanted and instead got a game that not even the developers wanted to make.

Borderlands 2 was the last one I heavily played. Gunplay, animations and feedback felt stiff and floaty. Tried borderlands 3 for a bit and it similarly had this weird “low energy” feeling to its gunplay that I couldn’t pinpoint. Stiff/poor animations, janky feeling recoil, etc I might play too much destiny

What is often overlooked about the colored rarity system, which i think borderlands really popularized, and destiny naturally expanded upon, is that tiers aren't supposed to just be like a 5% damage increase and nothing else. In BL2, I believe it's 13% more damage per level, then you have uniques and legendaries with special effects. Destiny added perk rolls to them, so legendary weapons can actually be better than exotics with certain perk combinations. It adds to the farming experience and uniqueness of the guns, because even two rolls of the same legendary can feel very different. I'd like to see the formula further expanded upon, but I can't really think of a good way to do that. Destiny 2, for all its shortcomings, has a very good weapon system, even if white, green, and blue are useless, if not completely removed from the game.

I wonder if advancements in AI could save modern gaming. We could ask AI to make complex worlds, complex in game AI, properly coded and optimized vehicles and more focus can be added to the polish and final product. No spaghetti code, no contractors that are the only ones that are familiar with the base code, nothing hidden and easy ways to simulate and create parts of games without much effort. Could lower the money required to develop, could make games easier to work on and could do things that humans couldn’t do well or wouldn’t consider. Interesting times indeed! AI is a tool and we must get comfortable with! Master it and make our lives easier so we can put more focus on what matters.

8.05 that's an FOV issue. You played the game at significantly lower FOV than what the screencard captured right? if anything on the video it shows the barrel pointing at low right of the impact point. That,s a 2d image pretending to be 3d by creating fake perspective, so everything that's not at the center of the screen is going to be off and break the illusion. That's why i remember master chief holding the guns like electric guitar in halo CE, but in halo CEA he holds them normally, because theres fov slider and it runs on modern televisions.

Hey, late night gaming I want to know what’s your thoughts upon if somebody were to take some of the assets of halo and put it into an AI generator for voice and script, and use the models to act out the script do you think that would be a wise idea I just figured to throw this out there for the halo community I’m not thinking of doing it. I just saw the SpongeBob show that was generated by AI and thought what if you did that but instead of SpongeBob grunts and elites with the jackals and throw in some USC soldiers, what would that be like so more or less this comment is meant to expire somebody to do that. Would it be in the rights? Really sucks. This game was right up my alley and I absolutely loved the concept of the game. I don't pre-order any game anymore since fallout 76 time. I am so glad I don't anymore I've said myself so much in 2023 alone it's insane. I wish redfall was good because its one of my favorite ideas and style of game I've seen in years but the last 3 years especially have only showed if it's aaa studio it's most likely a rushed piece of junk cash grab.

Im so mad i spent 70$ on this game and cant get it back. I spent most of the 2 hours tweaking the settings of the game to see if i can get it to run smoothly. This game is so awful and lacking so much. The map isn't that big but somehow it feels like your running forever because the npcs are so spaced out. The npc designs are so bleak and boring. There are basically no cinematic cutscenes which feels like a crime. I feel like the game lied to us by showing us the cool main characters with the fancy trailers and expensive animations just for them to not even be visible in the game other than in the menu. There will be no updates that can save this game. I just dont see that being possible.

I feel like the day nights cycle could work, maybe in the day cultists desperately try to hold ground defending their vampire overlords and you have to fight your way in to the defended areas and kill the vampires who are boarded up inside, but come night the hunter becomes the hunted, vampires everywhere, and you really have to play safer in the night to survive.

This sounds like it would work really well, and maybe the ambience and music could change (I don't know if there is any to be honest, thankfully I haven't had the misfortune of playing this) and then you would get this sense of existential dread. First night, you wonder where all the cultists have gone off to, then you see eyes, hear whispers, thirsting vampires, seeking to quench their thirst with your blood. In short, it would work better than what there is now.

I'm not too observant when it comes to first-person animations, but even I can tell Redfall has some ROUGH animations. Seeing things like magazines clipping into the guns and that lifeless run animation make me really appreciate when animations are done well in games. Great job with the video and especially with the editing!

I’m at a doctors appointment and will watch the video later. But here’s my review of the game. Love your very objective analysis of games btw. Keep it up!😊 My best friend and I tried Redfall like a month ago and the conclusion we came to after four solid hours of playing was “I wish I could like this game”. I love vampires and was looking forward to some co-op slaying. But how empty the world felt made exploring the vast map feel unrewarding and dull which only got worse with each encounter feeling exactly the same as we quickly began to grow overwhelmingly stronger compared to the enemies we were facing. Going back and forth to the hub area for main quests felt taxing and disruptive to exploration. It would have been nice if the quests came up providing a natural route through the world instead. The fast travel felt like an afterthought bandaid for this since players fast travel separately but all players must be present to accept all quests meaning you inevitably end up waiting for your friends as they gear up halting progress completely further dulling the whole experience. The bugs I experienced were minor, but I kinda wish they were insane so I had something to laugh at whilst waiting or looking for something to do in this coastal town. It was worse than a bad game. It was boring. A dumpster fire could at least put a smile on your face.

I made it to the end boss and I didnt even bother beating him, never played it again. The loot is so disappointing and repetitive. Map is small. Characters have no personality. Story is lame, not scary or intimidating. Everything is just blah.

It was inevitable that this would happen. All of Arkane’s games are flops except for Dishonored and to a lesser extent Dishonored 2. Even their best game Prey was a total flop to the point that the public completely missed that Arkane Studios had already made “Deathloop” before, only it was called “Prey: Mooncrash.” And “Prey: Mooncrash” was way better than “Deathloop.” So they were either chasing a trend or forced to chase a trend in gaming that they really didn’t have much love for and “Redfall” is the result.

I do disagree with this take honestly, Gollum is way worse, down to even it's very inception. Redfall sucks but there is a universe where I can see it being a good game, there is an idea there, though the actual product is no where near that potential. You also seem to feel this way to an extent as you spent most of the video showing ways that it Redfall could've been a better game. Gollum is flawed all the way down to the very idea for that game, it made no sense from the start. Plus you can argue that Redfall is on gamepass and it is also co op so at least you can share your suffering.

Calling 🧢 on "borderlands combat is bad, but people only care about the loot". Idk bro the gunplay is fun as hell and feels great, nobody said it was dishonored 2 but the loot isnt all thats good. I like blowing shit up and shooting elemental guns, borderlands does this the best. Destiny feels better I will say, but the story/loot/environments dont hold a candle to BL2 in particular.

Don't think a game flopping has ever made me felt more vindicated than this one lol. I voiced some mild skepticism (Essentially 'this feels like chasing an already dated trend and the dialogue makes me cringe) and got really bizarrely dogpliled by weirdly defensive people. And then the game came out and it was a million times worse than I assumed it was going to be. Im sad the game sucked so hard it essentially destroyed the cool studio that made it, but for once I was on the winning side of history and it makes me feel like god

The studio can still be "saved." Arkane Austin just needs to learn from this entire release, come up with a good concept for an immersive sim, get Xbox to approve the pitch in order to get more funding/developers/help, collaborate with sister studios to help with gameplay/the technical base of the game, get competent creatives on it, assemble a team passionate enough about the idea to work on it for 4+ years, and hopefully provide good direction on this new game. If their next game is a singleplayer game (it probably will be), they will need to do a lot more hiring because many people on the team are interested in making multiplayer games (The people that replaced most of the Prey team). Now that Redfall is out, even more developers have probably left Arkane Austin. It would probably be good if they released a statement that their next game is a singleplayer only immersive sim (if it is), so they can attract a lot of talented singleplayer oriented developers. Then when their next game releases in 2027/2028/2029, we will see how well they do.
