Quantum Of The Seas: 1 - our mind-blowing bridge tour of this new $1 billion cruise ship

www.redferret.net/?p=47036. Ever wondered what it's like to be the captain of a $1 billion cruise liner which is the most advanced on the sea at the moment? Yes, same here. Well we got the chance last week, when we were invited on board the incredible new Quantum of The Seas cruise liner (sister ship of the Anthem Of The Seas) for a 2 day shake-down excursion around the coast. And we got to visit the bridge to talk to the captain directly!
The ship is absolutely packed with new technology, from the snazzy kerb side check in with tablet computers, RFID luggage tracking and barcodes, to the floor to ceiling 4K LCD screens which act as virtual balconies, to deliver real time video of the sea view to inner cabins which don't have a real window.
We expected to be wowed, but we didn't expect to be so impressed with the sheer scale of the ship and it's systems, nor did we expect the visit to the bridge to be so totally awesome. It's like the ultimate boy's toy, only it weighs 168,000 tons and takes a few weeks to come to a halt on command.

Peter Paizes yes it is “fly by wire” because you can’t possibly operate a 300m hydraulic system that control several hundreds of tons of propeller whit a little stick. “Fly by wire” is a system where you move a lever that sends an electrical signal to a computer that then sends signals to the controls that then control hydraulics with much more power. This is the case in all airbus planes ✈️ where you have a sidestick. I think it's amazing that with all the computer tech we have nowadays, it has reduced piloting a MASSIVE nautical wonder of a cruise ship down to moving a tiny joystick left or right. It's mind-boggling! And for the question "Is it fly-by-wire?", yes. There's no doubt about it. At this point in history, it is far easier to build transmitters and relay-points for data between different sections of the ship (in this case, the bridge and the propulsion system) than it is to cable-wire every knob and switch. The bridge would be infinitely more complex than it is now if everything was manual. Also, i can guarantee there is multiple safe-guards and manual overrides somewhere on the ship in case the bridge loses connection with propulsion. There's a reason this ship cost $1 billion to build.

Though really in a plane really fly by wires more about preventing someone doing something potentially dangerous with a plane, otherwise the autopilots an entirely different thing, like going too close to the terrain in a plane there's an automated call out system that literally says something like "terrain pull up" it's that which is fly by wire.

Hi sir I'm wondering is vectored thrust on AIRBUS products is where the engine on the most outboard on the wing is then increased in N1% rpm to allow a yawing action to put the aircraft on a new vector (course) and in doing things this way, Airbus was able to reduce drag in flight by not having to use the rudder to actually turn the aircraft?cheers.

@@kenlee-97 I haven't heard about auto differential thrust but Airbus widebodies do automatically trim for pitch by varying the amount of fuel in the tailplane tank. Narrowbodies as well as all Boeings except the 747 lack this feature (and the 747 just uses it for extra fuel instead of trim).

Fly-by-wire not only means that the controllers aren't physically connected to control surfaces, but also that a controller does not control a specific control surface, but defines a control input (pitch, yaw, roll, translate, accelerate) and the computer decides which control surfaces or thrusters to use to achieve that movement. Those thruster controllers obviously don't have cables and pulleys or rods or hydraulic lines running all the way to the thruster pods, but they _are_ still controlling the individual thruster pods, so it's not fly-by-wire

For the rank and file person we are allowed to take pictures but not take videos of the Royal Caribbean cruises behind-the-scenes areas. And it has to be paid for too. It's great for the general public to get a glimpse of these areas normally off limits to the general public.

I've been on quantum of seas in April 2015 its was so much fun! And I love that tone of the 7 short blast followed by one long blast and I've been on every Disney cruise ship and not been on oasis of the seas independence of the seas serade of the seas quantum of the seas and I'm going on navigator of the seas February 18 I'm excited and it's always a good idea to fly to your port a day before it ports

Captain did not understand the question. Fly by wire means that the manual controls do not operate cables that move azipods or rudders mechanically. The controls send electronic signals to computers and the computers use actuators to execute the commands electronically. When I was a merchant marine a long time ago, all we had was a gyroscopic compass, a magnetic compass, a weather radar and the steering was either hydraulic on diesel powered vessels or steam operated on steam powered vessels. The engine commands were sent by a "telegraph" mechanism on the bridge which was connected to the "telegraph" repeater in the engine room mechanically with cable or chain. The navigation was done in the chart room by hand and calculations and sextants were often used. That was all. Today, even a 3 year old girl can command a huge ship or fly an aircraft because it is like electronic game that kids love to play. The ship and the aircraft can figure out where they are going by themselves. All that one has to do is program the departure location and the destination location into the FMS computer for aircraft and navigation management system on ship and the computers do the rest.

Of course, almost all ships use something called heading controll, you just put in what heading the ship should have, and it keeps that heading. Many ships (I think most cruise ships) also use something called track steering, you can see the red line on the electronic chart there, that is the planned route (the black line is passed track) and when you use track steering, the computers ensure that you are always following that route, an alarm sounds when you get close to a turn, and then another when it's time to start the turn, but the ship won't start the turn before you have confirmed that it's okey to do the turn. But even though you used manual steering, nothing would happen if you turned those handels on the bridge wing if the command was still on the mid consoll. To be able to manouver the ship from there, you have to claim the command.

Cruise ships have 3 autopilot settings: 1.track (follows the track/route on the chart) 2. Heading (follows a specific heading, true or magnetic) and 3. Course (follows a specific course, slightly different to heading as the wind/current affects the course over ground of a vessel)

No, not as far as I could see. The range of these bracelets (and all RFID chipsets) tends to be very small, no more than a few inches, so that wouldn't really be feasible. Interesting concept though.

Sounds like the fire warning system (It goes of on the bridge, crew check if it's real or not, if it is, they will warn the rest of the ship), often it's just a faulty sensor, or someone has taken a hot shower with an open door between the cabin and the bathroom. I work on a small "cruise" ship (takes up to 500 passengers), and usally I don't hear it at all during the shift, but other times we struggle with a sensor and it goes of all the time.

ARVIN Before anyone can get on the ship you are thoroughly searched (x-rayed, bags searched, items confiscated if they do not comply with the rules) which happens every time you get onto the ship. You also get given a "Sea Card" which is essentially ID which you have to present each time you get on and off the ship. How you get to the bridge is also a secret as there is not a way to get to through the public areas.
