Redfin Fishing At Lake Buffalo, Black Is The New White

It was great to be back redfin fishing at Lake Buffalo again. Black is the new white. I have never really considered black as a great colour choice for redfin, preferring instead to use brightly coloured soft plastics but on two recent redfin fishing trips black has outfished all other colours.

G'day Robbie. What a beautiful spot to fish. I spent most of the summer fishing the Waranga Basin in my kayak. I lost count of the hours. Anyway without dought the lure that caught the most fish, all redfin and one huge carp was a 75 mil black and gold paddletail squidgy with gold fleck in it. I threw every type of lure imaginable at them. But the squidgy out fished everything. I've called time on the Basin. The fish numbers have dropped off the perch, no pun intended and water level has dropped so much you wouldn't recognise the place any more.

I was up there on Monday Tuesday and Thursday and went out in the kayak and caught only 6 fish out of the 3 days

I did notice a a rapid water temperature drop with the receding water levels. Perhaps this was the cue to turn the fish off.

Thanks so much mate. It is so hard to give general advice on colours. For redfin, I usually start with a bright colour and then change regularly if that colour isn't working as I did in this video. 👍👍

Thanks so much for your kind words buddy. It's really hard to say what time of the day is best. In the cooler months I find sunrise is the best, but that may not be the case in channels. We don't have irrigation channels here so I don't fish them often. Try sunrise mate. 👍👍

I was thinking that maybe it was the low light myself why the black was getting the fish as I rarely use black or dark brown lures with any success in the fresh except low light and more so heading into the night over early morning

When I saw that black lure I immediately thought that looked like a mudeye, here in WA it is illegal to return Redfin to the water as they are not a native fish

Hi Dane, it depends what you want it for. For this type of fishing a 1-2kg, or slightly heavier, maybe 2+4kg is fine. The longer the better if you're casting lures from the bank.
