Any advice for redfish for someone without a boat?
@AlvinDedeauxFlyFishing3 жыл бұрын

We’re going in a few days to the rockport area. Are there any guides who would who would show you what to do fishing without a boat and supply the equipment?
@AlvinDedeauxFlyFishing3 жыл бұрын
@@nataliefletcher2470 Not that I know of. Guides need to have as many options as possible to find fish for clients. Not having a boat limits the options.

So I fish Christmas bay alot, I wet wade because I don't have the money for a boat this year I've been getting into fly fishing alot and I've been trying to figure out reds but so far have been un secsesful, I've had luck with reds on normal gear out deep in the bay versus in the super shallow water, when I go shallow I never see any reds, for wet wading would you rather spend a day waste to chest deep blind casting or walking the shallows?
@AlvinDedeauxFlyFishing3 жыл бұрын
I like walking the shallow stuff, but sometimes you have to go where the fish are. 😀

Alvin, first saw you on TikTok now follow you on KZbin. I'm close to the coast a love to fish the Reds, but normally Bass fishing. Do you using the same Spinning reels for both?

Alvin, I enjoy your fly fishing videos, truly. As an avid fly fisherman myself, your approach, delivery and knowledge of fly fishing the Gulf is greatly appreciated. I've tied some of your fly's and I'm looking forward to trying them out. I have yet to catch a Red Fish, i'm still learning the coastline here on the Texas coast. Looking forward to the next series of videos. Great work and thank you Alvin.

I am new to your KZbin channel so far I’m loving everything that I see. My question may been answered already if I knew more about you and your style. Do you ever fish redfish from kayaks or strictly from boats.

I have used kayaks in the past but it has been a while. Before that I just walked in to fish.

Alvin, thanks for all the great information. Any tips on retrieval? My cast is getting much better but can’t seem to get the bite response.
@AlvinDedeauxFlyFishing3 жыл бұрын
Most of the time it seems like faster is better, but the main thing is that they have to see the fly, so the closer you can get the fly the better.

Thanks for the video! I am in the Galveston area and wanting to get into red fish on the fly but do not have access to a boat. Is blind casting for Reds an option? ? Could you include info on finding Reds in less traditional waters (not marshy, harborside, bayous, etc.)?
@rolfewilliams48903 жыл бұрын
You should consider getting a kayak if you can, especially one that you can stand up and pole. This allows you to cover much more water and go in shallow, muddy areas where it's hard to wade. If you can stand up, you can spot fish much more easily. Lots of good areas around Galveston for kayaking.

Alvin, looking forward to the redfish series videos. Would like to know your thoughts on leader design for reds. Also your preference for leader butt /fly line connection. Thanks.
@AlvinDedeauxFlyFishing3 жыл бұрын
Most of my leaders are pretty basic. If I don't have factory tapered one I will just do a 3 section one. 40 to 60 lb but section around 4 feet then 30 or 40 lb mid section for 3 feet. Then a 12 to 20 pound tippet for 2 or 3 feet.

What is the best overall weight rod to use and also do you always use floating line
@AlvinDedeauxFlyFishing3 жыл бұрын
If I had to pick 1 rod it would be an 8 weight. Most of the time a floating line is all you need.

Great videos. They have def helped my fishing skills. Question: is wade fishing for redfish practical on the Tx coast or is a boat required to site cast for them? Am wondering if a boat is needed to get a good visual of these fish and if muck/weeds/access makes wading along the central & south Texas coast very difficult.
@AlvinDedeauxFlyFishing3 жыл бұрын
I wade fished for years, then fished out of canoes and kayaks for years after that. A boat does allow you to cover a lot more water when looking for redfish, but you can find them on foot as well.
@quentinwilliams633 жыл бұрын
My question is, when looking for red what should i look for structure wise and where do reds usually like to Congragate?
@coreytohme98613 жыл бұрын
Where are you fishing for them currently? The dark marshy areas vs the clearer water sandy areas differ quite a bit. I can offer some suggestions for the marshy stuff, but I can't help as much with the sandy stuff. One thing that is consistent though, is bait. No matter where you are, you have to find the bait. No bait, no predator fish.
@quentinwilliams633 жыл бұрын
@@coreytohme9861 i been fishing in Delacroix, La and its marshy. Ive been seeing a lot of mullet and crabs but no reds. Maybe i went during the wrong time of day.
@coreytohme98613 жыл бұрын
@@quentinwilliams63 , I'm a LA boy myself. In that area, during spring and summer, focus on the ponds with the aquatic grass. The grass will help filter the water (giving better clarity) and gives bait and reds places to hide. If you are in a poling skiff you should be able to fish areas that 90% of the locals can't because their trolling motor can't get through the grass. I have seen reds floating in what I call potholes (an area the size of a vehicle or maybe smaller that is void of grass in the middle of a big grass mat) and along the edges of the grass. That area is popular to many redfishermen and gets pressured a lot. However, you should be able to find some reds around there. During fall and winter, I would venture out to some of the larger lakes and bays and target fish there. Fish near the shore line, but DO NOT be afraid to pole across the middle of a big flat. You would be surprised how many fish are cruising around the middle of a bay and not just along the shoreline. Let me know if you have any more questions. Look out for stingrays too. Reds and stingrays usually go hand in hand.

Have never caught a Red on the fly hope to break that streak soon. Is there one time of the year when the Reds are in the shallows more often?

I do believe bud rowland still holds the record for largest saltwater trout in Texas? I don't think I have ever seen you target speckled trout though? I know you got some monster trout in Texas.
@AlvinDedeauxFlyFishing3 жыл бұрын
I was wondering about that record. Need to check in with Google. We don't see trout up shallow as often as redfish, but they are usually big ones. Hard to get the big ones to eat a small redfish fly.

Thanks Alvin! Really looking forward to these videos.👍 Still haven’t caught a Red on fly..yet. Only fished one day in the surf and Packery jetty last month. Hope to get back in a bay soon. I’ve been practicing on carp in the Pedernales and man they’re fun, even similar looking. Caught my biggest ever last week, over 20 lbs on my 4wt. Thought it was going to break my rod.😂 Many more 7-10 pounders and they even seem to run faster and harder, just not as long. Love the fight! Have a great and blessed week Alvin. 🎣
